Thank you so very much for this informative video, Rob. I needed to do this exact thing. It appears that someone has tampered with your template. Would you be able to make available the correct Google Sheets template again?
WOW thanks for this info. I have been shooting (worker) with a volume photographer and thinking about doing the same but not sports mostly couples, events, and portraiture.
That's what is nice...it can work for any even where you have to attach an order form to a file and face. :) I use it in schools frequently. I honestly don't know what I did before this.
Thank you so much! I needed to update this post, after a little bit of back and forward on my Mac, it IS working after so many years!!! You made my day, my month, my year!!! I would like to know what photographers do these days, are there other AI apps/systems thart can help to do this job? 🤔🤔🤔
Thanks so much for this video! Is it possible to add additional data besides name to be added to the QR code that is sent to LR? student id, grade, teacher??
Rod, so I had my shoot (about 375 kids) and The QR codes helped immensely in renaming. However, there have been a couple glitches you might want to know about. Like the qr code detector picking up codes that are NOT there. These kids have mesh jerseys. I think its seeing a code in the mesh. Only happened on about five or six.
Hey Paul, I know its been over 2 years since you wrote this, but I think I have come across the same problem as you. Did you manage to find a work around ?
Aaw Rob You are a STAR Mate🙏 This is a well detailed tutorial and am definitely going to follow the steps. Very informative and will be back with feedback. Many thanks Rob😇🙏
This is great Rob, been looking for this type of solution. How do you handle kids that weren't on the list provide by the club? Can you generate a new QR code on the fly?
If a new kid shows up, just type their name in a blank field and a new QR code will pop up. So you DO need internet access...usually not a problem with today's phones. I just make a hotspot with my phone, and connect my iPad to it's wifi.
You can also add notes to their name, for example, if mom walks up and says "Make sure you retouch his zit!", you type that into the field next to his name, and the QR code will show that text when the file is renamed.
@@RobSigler Thank you. I also had a comment in one of the Facebook groups that you could have a few extra codes say 1-10 and just ad the details on a sheet and copy across later, I guess that could work if WiFi or mobile data isn't an option.
@@RobSigler Hi Rob this is awesome information! I'm an old fart so i don't know much about how to go about formatting google sheets but do you think you can develop this awesome concept further so that it can do the following - basically eliminating paper registration? 1). A customer scans a QR code (using her phone) that brings her to a registration page. She then inputs her or her sons/daughter name (whoever is going to have a picture taken), her email, & phone number). Google sheets then generates a QR Code with all those additional info. 2). The new QR code just generated can then be used by a photographer to identify the subjects before taking their pictures and renaming them later in LR. 3). I also would like for us to be able to Print info or convert it into a CSV format for other uses, like making followup, marketing, or use for automating the putting name of subject on their pictures, etc. Thanks so much.
TheArtisticPhotography.com thanks for the questions. I’ll answer the best I can...You can make a QR code that points to a website. So, you could put a QR code on your mailer/info letter, etc. Parents could scan the code, then enter the information. You could use any number of methods for creating a registration form (like wordpress plugins, etc). The tricky part comes in getting the database information into Google Sheets. You CAN do everything you want using a program called “FileMaker Pro,” but it’s more expensive than Photoshop. And by the time you learn the steep learning curve, it might be easier just to hire an assistant to do all of your dirty work. :). Best wishes...Your ideas have sparked my brain...I”m going to look into this (because I could use this technique too!)
Hi Rob, thanks for sharing this method for volume photography. How do you print out the QR code with names showing. This way, we can photograph the card and student at the same time as opposed to the "screen capture" method you have in your video.
Hi David. There are a number of ways to print out the QR code...you can print them from a database, you can print them like mailing labels, you can print them on stickers, cards, etc. That being said...I've tried this in the past. It is difficult to 1. make sure each kid has the correct card and 2. prevent kids from folding up the paper. Once folded, it's difficult to read. I've also had photographers goof up the focus on the QR shot, which makes naming the kid impossible. I've found the screen capture to be the best, easiest way. Let me know if I can help with this process. :). Rob
@@RobSigler Thanks Rob for getting back to me so quickly. I was trying to print the names along with the QR code image for a hard copy, but the image was too small.
This is great! Thank you for this. I am curious about how this could work if you didn't have their names. I'm looking to do a headshot event and I just need to associate a QR code to a gallery.
Rob, Thank you so very much for providing such a great process. I do have a question, if I wanted to print out the QR codes to have on hand, do you have any way to do that currently?
Hi Abel! Thanks for watching my video! There are tons of apps for phones and computers that can help you print QR codes. A basic google search will turn up hundreds. You can also print them using any graphics application like photoshop, etc. you can even print them from spreadsheets.
Hi Rob, great video - however I think ive followed your instructions correctly but Lightroom is no renaming them in sequence per barcode group of images. It's naming them all sequentially so the second barcode image in the collection is say 12345678-004.jpg not 12345678-001.jpg what have I done wrong?
You can use the same QR code for the same kid...that's why we add the 4 digit sequence number at the end of the file name. Jane_Davis-0001, Jane_Davis-0002...So once you sort your files by name, you see all of Jane Davis's pictures. So you'll see her in multiple costumes.
It works for me in LR Classic on Mac, July 2024. I had to install the plugin manually through the Plugin Manager in LR, and give permissions when using for the first time. To get around it being from an 'unidentified developer', I had to run it to the point where Apple wouldnt let it run, cancel it, then go into System Settings>Privacy & Security>scroll down to Security and where it says to 'allow anyway' (this only shows up after trying to run it first). It then ran fine the next time. Hope this helps.
Hi Rob, Great video! Is the excel spreadsheet able to function outside on a standalone, non connected to internet platform? I haven't messed with it yet and just wondering since more than likely, I won't have access to Google when using it. Thx
Tony Palmieri unfortunately you’ll need the internet to look up the QR code’s. You could always print them ahead of the job, then just photograph them with a camera (and not screenshot). You could also save the QR code as a Jpg and save them on your device. I hope that helps! Best wishes.

The general concept of this approach still works. You can get a barcode scanner, and zap it at the picture of the QR code to rename your files. I currently use SmartShooter by Tether Tools, zap the QR code with my barcode scanner, and it types the name of the file while shooting tethered. When not shooting tethered, I use Photo Mechanic and import using one subject per camera folder. This way I don't even have to scan codes.
Hi rob, I am looking at using this system for the first time. Is there anyway making the qr code larger? and also adding more information like team name etc. Thanks
I have a question. I take photos of our students. In the past, we print their names in big letters on yellow paper. They hold up the card, we take a photo. Then we take the card and take their real photos. Can we print a large QR code on the card rather than do a screenshot? This would keep it all in sequential order.
