The Lake District | A Swindale Round with

  • Hi Everyone
Welcome back to the second part of my recent adventure in the north eastern fells taking on the four Wainwrights on the Swindale round splitting it up in to two walks with an overnight summit camp on Grey Crag.
If you haven't already please go and check out the first part before watching this.
After a decent nights sleep in the tent, the rain started around 5.30am just after I woke up. After a brew and a breakfast bar, we struck camp, donned the waterproofs and set off for the 6 miles back to the car.
Our plan was to cut a straight line over the pathless ground from Grey Crag down to the bridge that crosses Mosedale Beck. However, with the visibility being very poor we decided to take the longer but easier option of retracing our steps from the night before down to the col at the gate then take the walk down the full length of Mosedale so we could stop at Mosedale Cottage Bothy for a brew.
After a 20 minute stop at the bothy we continued our walk down the valley in to Swindale and then back to the car.
This is a wonderful route, but very boggy. I would certainly advise boots and gaiters no matter what time of the year you do it. Please don't let that put you off though, if it's a sense or remoteness in the hills you are looking for then this is the area for you.
Below is a link to the full circular route in OS maps and please if you have any questions just pop them in the comments and I will answer them.

    All the best
    Dave

@@tubbatravels Hi Niall, I love Mosedale Cottage, I’ve visited a couple of times now. Not stayed there yet though but it’s on the list. The head of Swindale valley is a lovely place and very remote, not many people visit there.

    Hi there,
Thank you for sharing the second part of your Swindale Round adventure! The overnight summit camp on Grey Crag looks fantastic, despite the early morning rain. Your detailed account of the route and advice on navigating the boggy terrain is very helpful. This area truly offers a sense of remoteness in the hills. Looking forward to more of your adventures!

It's definitely a claggy start to the morning, Dave, but it's well worth it for the views that opened up. That Bothy was perfect. I bet that is welcome on a winter hike. You looked soaked. Was it just from the grass and bog, or was it pouring down at times? Another great video Dave, thanks for sharing.

@@chrisbentleywalkingandrambling Hi Chris, it wasn’t raining all the time, but it’s a very boggy area of the Lake District and the grass is very long in a lot of places. I chose the wrong footwear. I put my walking shoes on and I really needed boots and gaiters!
The Bothy was brilliant, there were three lads in there who’d stayed over night. We saw them when we popped in for a brew.
