      It was a lovely place to be. I drove it well enough not to worry too much about the water but without a caddy I could have run up a very big score. Worth every penny of a large tip that Lady. Wonderful company. I'm sat here wondering if cancelling my second round there was the right move. I think it was. Cheers

      I would be lost without a caddy. On some putts I would have 8 feet instead of a tap in. I think you have to live there like Golf Sidekick to learn grain. Fortunately some grasses are not so hard to putt on.
      Great course but not what I would call a 'holiday' course.

    Just play the lake course. Great golf course, will gladly play it again. Great staff, my Caddy was #108 her name is Sao, great caddy, had water for me did not even have to ask. So don’t buy any water, caddy’s always bring some. ( they don’t want you to pass out, they don’t want to carry you off the course 😂). But all that said. Play this course, it’s worth it.
    Thank you Blue Canyon, will always have good memories.

      It's a good track and cheaper than the Canyon course that I didn't really like that much. If you are going to charge a lot of money then you had better not have that broad leaf native grass i nthe fiarways. When I was there after covid most courses only had 1 drink stop open.

    Really enjoyed watching this, it seems like paradise, the compulsory caddy thing is odd but seemingly useful and entertaining.
    I'm presuming that a tip at the end of the round is welcomed.?
    A shame about the yanks.! 😉

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You do have to have a caddy. It's the same all over Asia. Provides some employment of course. It can add to the fun of the round and of course help with the scoring. The caddy fee is 400Baht and the caddy gets 350 of that. You need to tip 500 minimum. Which isn't a lot of money to us but a decent chunk to them. That really helps put food on the table and pay the rent.
      Did I mention yanks in this? I thought I got stuck behind some slow people from Singapore?? Maybe I need to watch it again.

      Amazing caddy Eric. I can't stress enough how much joy they bring to the game and how many shots they save you. 34 stableford on that course from those tees and all the credit goes to the caddy. And the maximum tip. Which for me is 28 Euros. I do sometimes go a little more. With inflation I'm going to have to put that up on my next trip.

      I cannot praise a good caddy enough. Even with English greens I would struggle on a strange course with so many hazards. It's wonderful having a companion for 4 hours cheering you on. I was driving quite well this holiday so never in too much trouble off the tee. That's why I had all thgose lessons through winter.

      It must be hard to fly the ball all the way to the hole when you have been used to the chip and run . Good job your driving is good, I wouldn't want to go in the shrubbery with the likes of the predators they have in Thailand

  • @ChiliDippaGolf

    This course is gorgeous! I think I would sacrifice my warm up to be able to get out there early before it gets super hot. Nice bird on that hole surrounded by water! That was unfortunate that you thought you lost your ball on that one hole but that's 1 less ball lost. I probably would have lost a dozen balls out there. Course looks very challenging with some forced carries. I just got back from a golf trip and the grains on the greens came into play. It would mess with my mind sometimes. Looks like it should break left but the grain almost takes it back uphill. Solid play out there Simon!

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That course was really nice Mark. Perhaps I should have had my second round there instead of chaging it? When we got to that first birdie hole I couldn't believe how close to the water my drive had finished, the caddy didn't seem so sure on the tee box. If I had known just how tight the hole was I might of choked on the tee.
      A good course but perhaps not a holiday course.
      The grain was hard to read, well, impossible for me. I would have missed some putts and some others would have rolled past 5 feet. Without a caddy I would have been at least 4 shots worse. More than that. Great Lady, good fun, great companion for 4 hours.
      Very happy to have done as well as I did.

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I forgot to say. Sometimes when you get to the course early and the first tee is empty you get taken straight there and lose your warm up. If I could speak the language I would always insist on going to the range for 20 7 irons to see where I was hitting it that day. No serious stuff, just a stretch. Might save me from the 1st tee pull down the left I seem to do very often.

      @@ChiliDippaGolf She was wonderful. Parked me in the shade all day. I love the breeze you get in a cart. Walking would kill me.
      When I get on the green I can see the slope, I can see the colour of the grass, I go look at the hole to see where the dead grass is. I still haven't a clue. Some of the greens are a different grass and don't have much grain on them. I like those.

    Does the ball fly futher in Thailand due to the heat and humidity ?

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm going to say yes but when the ball lands on many courses it goes splat. So my 230 yard carry with the driver doesn't go much further. But some courses are drfier and then you get some decent run out. I think the ball being hot can give you another 5%. That's my best guess.

    Absolutely agree with you about the course and slope rating of the Lakes course. Never in a million years should it be so low. Fantastic course & good to see it in good condition (I know it well). Did you play the Canyon course? Red mountain is great but for me the Canyon is just such a good layout and the Lakes is such lovely course.

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No complaints about the condition. Maybe I was hasty in cancelling my second round but it worked out well as my official second round at Red Mountain was a wash out.
      I played Canyon twice. The first round was a disaster for a number of reasons. Cart path only or the estate road, a caddy who didn't know the markers are to the front of the green and despite me telling her to wait in the cart until I had measured the shot kept coming to me with 1 club. The wrong club. Second time around I had a great caddy and tore it up.
      Both courses are good but I wouldn't call either of them 'holiday' courses. Laguna is a good holiday course, Canyon and Lakes would eat 20 handicappers alive. A poor striker of the ball would have a miserable time on both courses. But then Red Mountain is like that as well. Thanks David

      @davidramsay2173 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thehairygolfer I agree with you the course at Blue Canyon can be challenging, possibly why the Canyon course has held dual sanctioned European Tournaments 3 times, and recently the Asian Tour, etc. I’m a bit biased as I’m a member 😉
      Red Mountain as you know is very hilly and goes from fairway to jungle - it’s normally in great condition and a lovely place to relax and enjoy.

      @@davidramsay2173 First time out at Canyon was very hard. I shot a zillion on the back 9 and I just didn't want to be there. I'm guessing the caddy played on the Lakes course 99 times out of 100. I would have just sent her back to the cart for the right club but it was miles away.
      When I've played Siam Plantation or the Old Course the caddy brings 3 clubs and on par 5's sometimes 6 clubs. They give good lines off the tee and good yardages.
      Anyway, my second round was a dream instead of a nightmare.

      Hi David, Blue Canyon was about 50 minutes away. It's not far on the map but it's all small roads. 6:30am alarm call. I asked Golf Asian for 9am tee times rather than my usual 9:00am pick up. I wanted to get out before the rush as I had the camera but it didn't work out.
      I know that Golf Sidekick tees off at 7am. Of course he has the problem of getting out of Bangkok before the traffic gets stupid. I think he gets up around 4am for a round. I'd live outside the city unless his job is in the city of course.

      @thehairygolfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My legs did not like the hill Brian! I played 18 on sunday walking quite slowly and then 9 on monday and 9 on tuesday. I'm walking better but still a bit stiff and a bit sore. But I had to get away from these 4 walls.
      Scores were 13 over for 18 and then 7 over for 9 and 6 over for 9. I'll worry about it in a couple of weeks. Worst bit is putting.
      My son got a 101, 47 and 46 towards his first handicap against a par of 69 & 35. Scratch off the yellows is 70. I think he's going to be lower than he first thought. My eldest hasn't done any cards yet.
      No geese at lilley brook! But we did see the deer go through on sunday. Cheers

    It looked another lovely course but I know what you mean about all that water. There are times when all those water hazards get in the way of one's enjoyment.
    As usual, more decent golf, with a couple of good birdies. The grain looks to be a difficult issue as, whatever you need to do, your brain, which is tuned in to British greens, will disagree!!! Did you conquer that by the end of your trip?
    I hope that your leg is better and that you'll be back on the course shortly?

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad I was driving well or I would have run up a very big number. Having a great caddy who really knows her course saves you a pile of shots. I cannot praise them enough.
      Grain is something I don't really understand. I don't know why it grows in patches on the same green growing different ways. Somebody told me one time it grows in the direction that water runs off the green. That doesn't seem to be totally accurate so I just don't know. A caddy is essential to scoring.
      What it does do is make me remember putts. You remember the putts that went wrong and then the next time you play you've at least got a clue where it doesn't go.
      I did conquer one course at the end of the trip. I played Loch Palm 3 times with the same caddy and we were a proper team by the end of it.
      I'm back on the course. Walking slowly and playing badly! But I'm marking cards for the kids to get their first handicap which is fun.

      @@thehairygolfer I'm glad that you're back playing and scorekeeping for the boys. It must seem as if you've been off weeks!!!
      My hip is killing me, so I've had to give up playing (the whole of 2 days so far!) until the doctors prescribe better painkillers - if they ever call back!!!!!
      Thankfully, grain is something that doesn't seem to affect us so much on greens in this country. I assume that it's because of the grass plants over here being completely different to those in Thailand due to our different climates?
      Despite all the water, it looked a smashing course, though some of the lines that Tui showed you on the greens seemed extravagant, to say the least!
      Sad to see slow play rearing its head on yet another of your Thai blogs. It's crazy! I know it's a holiday and no-one wants to rush, but having that sort of wait to play your next shot is ridiculous!

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nevillehubbard7347 Sorry to hear about the hip. I got some painkillers but they were as useful as throwing bricks in the grand canyon. Never going to fill it in!
      The one thing I have learnt from grain is to look at which way the mower went on a 4 foot putt. The mower can make a slight difference if you are playing a couple of hours after they cut the greens. Other than that I really don't know much about it.
      Lovely course, not a blade of grass out of place. Just a little tiring on the brainbox!
      I'm happy to play steady pace golf out there and to stop at the drink stops, get some ice and a fresh drink out of the fridge. Cool down for 5 minutes and any fast groups can pass. Quite often you swap places with groups all the way round as and when people cool off. In this case they were just practicing their putting every hole. Having multiple goes at 4 footers. I could have just stopped but a game was coming up behind me.
      The only time I want to play fast is on a very hot day with strong sunshine. I want to be out there for as short a time as possible.
      Just don't ask me about South Korean 5 balls playing from the 7200 yard tees as to play forward is loss of face!!!!!! Go on ask :O)

      @@thehairygolfer LOL. So tell me about the South Korean 5-balls playing from the tips?????
      (When I lived in Bangladesh, nearly 40 years ago, not only were the South Koreans "meticulous" - 6 hour rounds were not uncommon - but they couldn't count, so much so that the Club sent out markers, for competitions, to count for them. The first week this happened, a gross 78 turned into a net 89!!!!).

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nevillehubbard7347 You sucker for punishment! Some courses permit 5 balls mid week. So you get 50 guys playing in 5 balls. They play 7200 or even 7400 yards despite being terrible golfers. And they bet. Almost every shot. I've seen huge rolls of money in their hands. They can't be breaking 140 some of them.
      Played a course called Greenwood which is 27 holes. After 4 holes the caddies drove us to one of the other 9's to restart our round from scratch. An absolute nightmare.
      Then after 9 holes they stop for an hour to have a meal!
      On this last trip a caddie was telling me she was promised £20 tip for a birdie and the guy didn't play a single hole better than a double bogie! We had a good laugh all the way round talking about golfers she had caddied for. She called me Mr. Par even when I did get a couple of birdies. They can have high expectations of you holing everything from everywhere. Which is so funny too, I just hand them the putter and let them have a go at it. It's not so easy is it girl?
      I'd like to bring a caddy here and she what she thinks of english golf, not sure my wife would approve. What do you think?
