Pittsburgher here. There was no greater rivalry than the Steelers/Raiders. Loved this presentation and footage I haven't seen before. What great memories of a great decade for both teams.
I was there, strangers hugging each other, shaking hands then that moment of indecision until the ref raised his hands, when Franco crossed the goal line and an avalanche of fans that poured onto the field. Someone asking who caught that ball and myself and many others "Franco Harris"
It was interesting hearing the 'other' side lol. I noticed in the presentation the other angles...namely the front deflection is not shown. All I know is watching this play as a 12 year old from Erie made me a Steeler fan for life.

Why didn't Tatum just knock the ball down? He did on the previous play. Bradshaw had thrown a very similar pass to Steeler TE John McMacken. Tatum used textbook technique, reached around McMacken and knocked it down. But for some reason he went for the knockOUT against Fuqua.

With all the controversy aside I’m just amazed with how well this mini doc turned out. It’s amazing to hear the voices of John Madden, Al Davis, Villapiano, men who were passionate about football, the Raiders and most of all WINNING. These men built the foundation for the Raiders Organization and I wouldn’t be a fan without the legacy they left behind. Salute! ☠️🏴☠️

I have a old friend from Pittsburgh and we trash talk each other but we both realize that those rivalries where the best smash mouth football games especially if you got to watch those games back in the 70's like I did as a kid.

As bad as this was for the Raiders, the TUCK rule game 29 years later, was FAR WORSE. Because here we are looking at the film of the immaculate reception, over and over, back-and-forth. And the TUCK rule game, it was more than obvious that Tom Brady fumbled that damn football. He even admitted he fumbled. Unlike Frenchy Fuqua who makes light humor of The immaculate reception.
According to that rule, if you start the throwing arm forward and then pull back and then go forward again it can only be an incomplete pass. It can't be ruled a fumble. I would instruct every QB from now on to pump fake every play so you are fumble-proofed.

I met Mr Davis in the second Deck of the Oakland coliseum before a game he was just looking at the field and warm ups we walked by and shook his hand that was the greatest day as a raider fan for me not too many fans get a chance like those especially now a days,
Yeah Steelers and raiders Monday night games were the best I have ever seen even the good games nowadays do not compare to those great Monday night gems I saw them all on TV and some live at the Oakland Alameda county coliseum, the greatest games ever, if I remember correctly a good seat went for under 30 and a large cold one and bag of peanuts under 4 good ol'days for sure,

You mean LIES. A touchdown WAS called 17:46 as soon as Franco crossed the goal line. Referee Swerengin was accompanied to the phone by Jim Boston, 17:57 the supervisor of all game day activities for the stadium, NOT by Dan Rooney. The Steelers 3:17 were 11-3 , the Raiders 10-3-1
Those were the best days, the games between the Raiders and Steelers were great.

As a then 12 year old, it broke me. I cried for hours just heart sick over my Raiders losing that one. Stabler & Tatum were my heroes and to this day I find that game hard to accept.
I was 22 when the tuck rule happened. Watched it live. It’s my generation’s immaculate deception. Felt like my heart had been ripped out of my chest. It’s a damn shame Raiders fans share hose jobs through the generations.

Frenchy didn't catch the ball, he tried to but Jack hit the ball with his shoulder and Franco caught it and ran it in. Period. Watch the replay in slow motion. It is obvious. If they don't show it blown up and slowed down then they don't want you to know the truth.

i was a kid watching my Raiders on TV that day. doesn't matter how it happened, it happened. it happened so fast, no one knew it was happening. both those teams were great. many of my favorite players are now passing away... ah, mortality...

It is said that on that day in that game there was a total of 15 Hall of famers that played in that game.... The most Hof's ever to be in one game is still a record that will in my opinion never be broken...

You're thinking of Super Bowl XIII between the Steelers and the Cowboys, which actually had more than 15 Hall of Famers playing. The Steelers alone are credited with 15 Hall of Famers for that one, though I don't know if that's counting coach Chuck Noll and owner Art Rooney. The Cowboys also had a couple of Hall of Famers on their coaching staff - head coach Tom Landry, defensive coordinator Ernie Stautner (in the Hall for his playing career with the Steelers), and Mike Ditka (who is from Pittsburgh and went to Pitt).
But still, I counted 11 Hall of Famers in this game - not including both head coaches, both owners, and one assistant coach (Tom Flores - a receivers coach for the Raiders). Still an amazing collection of talent.

If you watch the view taken from behind Bradshaw, slow it down and you will see Tatum's hands are positioned to attempt the interception. He just couldn't get there quick enough, and the rest is history....

seeing that window in the wall of the stadium brought back memories of when I worked there...used to sneak in there and watch the game when in wasn't occupied by a tv camera....

Tatum always claimed he never touched the ball, but if Franco hadn’t picked it up and scored, Jack would have taken credit for breaking up the pass to Frenchy.
The call was to Art McNally who was the head referee. No one called to ask about security.
Long time Steeler fan. I as only 2 at the time this was played so no recollection. Great video, well presented visuals & all. I’ll always respect Madden as a class act in addressing and handling the situation.
The verdict: Jack Tatum's inability to refrain from taking a cheap shot cost the Raiders a chance at a Super Bowl and ruined the Maddens' anniversary.
Let it go Raiders. The ball bounced off of Tatum’s shoulder pad and Franco caught it out of the air and ran it in for a touchdown. 😊

My grandfather is Brady Keyes Jr. And although I believe he was retired at the time he played for the Steelers and was on the sidelines when this happened. A fact that I only found out at his funeral. As for me I've been a Raiders fan for over 30 years and I'm so sad that I missed the opportunity to have one of the greatest conversations I could have ever had with him.

I believe he always contended that he never touched the ball.
Of course, it's entirely possible that he wouldn't know for sure. He was busy blasting into a full-grown human man at that moment, so maybe the ball could have made contact with Tatum without it registering.

Tatum wanted Fuqua to bail him out. He probably knew he touched the ball and also probably recognized that if he'd have played the ball instead of trying to decapitate his opponent, the Raiders would've won. So yeah. If I were him, I'd probably want somebody else to say something that took me off the hook, too.
The "Immaculate Reception" will always hurt. The "Tuck Rule" will always hurt.
We beat the Patriots last week on a crazy play, it doesn't come close to the tuck rule game because of the magnitude of that playoff game but I'll take it. Now we just need to beat the Steelers and that won't be make it even but I'll take a win.
Real Raider fans know the past and real Raider fans will never forget and definitely never forgive!
It should be mandatory that all new players for the Raiders should have to watch every significant game and learn the history of the franchise to truly become a Raider!

NFL got rid of the double tap rule before the 1980 season I believe. Ironically that rule helped Oakland beat San Diego on the AFC Championship game. Plunkett's pass deflected off Kenny king to Raymond Chester for touchdown
Very true. They got rid of that rule in 1978. Had it still existed in 1980, the Raiders first touchdown against the Chargers in the AFC Championship game would've been illegal.

I think it bothers the Raiders so much because they'd had consistent success against the Dolphins at that time. Some believe that the '72 Raiders team could've stopped the Dolphin's undefeated season (which was already based on the weakest schedule of nearly every team that year)
I don't know James. That Dolphin team were awfully good, and we couldn't beat them in the playoffs the following year when we were better than '72 and the Dolphins not as good as '72. However when you look at that Dolphin unbeaten run that spanned two seasons, the last team to beat them before it began? And the team that ended it the following year? The Raiders, both times! So perhaps? We will never know!

Hey guys Steeler fan here. I love the rivalry, missed the good days of Raiders VS Steelers back in the day when great defenses decided games. Having said that, you can analyze this play everything you want, whatever happened in that collision I am pretty sure not even Jack or Fuqua know for sure 100%, but I guess the refs made the call to the best of their abilities. I like the analysis on both sides, and I think aside Al Davis spiteful comments, it is a balanced well done video. Fifty years after it is still an amazing play even if the Raider Nation hurts everytime they see it. Don't worry we have our own collection of those. RIP Franco, a great player and human being.

If you watch it very closely watch number 86 for the Oakland Raiders he freezes everywhere. We acted sooner when Franco caught the ball. Things might’ve been a little different, but I guess we’ll never know.
That we'll never know the answer is obviously what makes the play so memorable after all these years. But that freeze frame at 10:24 sure makes it look unlikely that Tatum didn't touch the ball.

Also, I don’t think I’ve ever seen footage of the actual last play of the game, the Stabler pass to Chester that was broken up…always wondered exactly what happened AFTER the Immaculate Reception, since Franco scored with five seconds left.
Raymond Chester is a cool dude. He hired me at my first job while i was in high school back when he was managing Lake Chabot Golf Course.

This was a very illuminating video. I always knew the IR was a famous play from the great Franco Harris. I remember it at the time. I never knew there was any controversy about it being a possible dead ball. Wow!
There was joy in HateTheRaidersVille after the immaculate reception on December 23, 1972.
In the 1970s, my favorite NFL teams were the Packers, Bears and whoever was playing against the Raiders.
I no longer hate the Raiders of old. In retrospect, I appreciate the accomplishments of John Madden, Kenny Stabler, Jack Tatum and many more from the old Raiders teams.
I actually purchased a Raiders sweatshirt sometime in the 1990s...but the shirt was doubly discounted. Otherwise, I wouldn't have purchased it, but the fact that I did purchase it demonstrates that I no longer disdained those magnificent Raiders of Old.
I was 8 years old when this game was played. My little brother was born the week before on December 11th, but to this day, and I imagine for the rest of my days, at now 58 years old, whenever 1972 pops into my head, it is this game that I think of first and foremost from that year and my brother's birthday is a distant second. As with Coach Madden, I'll go to my grave thinking we were robbed of the game by a bad call. That Frenchy Fuqua to this day refuses to say anything, is reason enough for me to believe he touched the ball with his hand and Tatum's hit was the force that propelled the ball back from Fuqua's hand so that Franco Harris could reach down and catch it and run to glory. A slice of history. But to hear both the play by play of those two legendary broadcasters, Bill King and Curt Gowdy, calling the play, and the game, brought a smile to my face.

This is the first video I’ve seen that had the of play by play by the late great Bill King. The epitome of what an announcer is. His excitement and passion was unspoiled by partiality. He is a hall of famer and one of the greatest
There's an even longer version of Bill King calling that play he thought it was Frenchy going down the sidelines at first and then he corrected himself and said it was Franco, he was screaming during the play he was so pumped
I think he's the best announcer in NFL history on the radio, because he was never a homer, he got excited when the visiting team did something against the Raiders just as much as when the Raiders made a play themselves.

None of the countless documentaries/videos produced in the 80s, 90s, 00s, 2010s, that discuss this game has ever shown that angle. I know it's probably because it makes for way better mythos for the NFLs history, but it's still fucked.
Crazy how many franchise-altering decisions not in our favor have happened to us. Imagine if that wasn't ruled a touchdown and imagine if they ruled Brady fumbled the ball. Could have a lot more super bowls under our belts.
Perhaps, but the Steelers had laid a great foundation for winning by hiring Noll, working with Blesto Scouting, and hiring Bill Nunn fulltime. Nunn was the Sports Editor of the Black newspaper, The Pittsburgh Courier and he had all the inside information on the best Black college players in the country. Nine starters, including Greene, Stallworth, and Blount, were from small Black colleges.

It's funny that people still argue about the play. Here's my two cents...
People like to say that the play was illegal because the ball was supposedly touched by Fuqua. What's the difference between a pass deflected backwards towards the line of scrimmage and one thrown backwards towards the line of scrimmage?
But there's more. Tatum committed defensive pass interference by (a) flattening Fuqua before the ball arrived, and (b) not even attempting to play the ball and not the receiver. Tatum had position and could have intercepted the ball but chose to flatten Fuqua instead.
But in the end, "at this point what difference does it make?"

There's only one thing about this play that we know for certain -- it was Franco Harris' finest moment as a football player. RIP Franco.

I've heard a lot of people say that ball hit the ground before Harris picked it up. What I would like to know is why the NFL only shows that play from a certain angle where you can't see Harris actually catching it.
Because those are all the camera angles.

I have always been a Raider’s fan. Fact is, this was a good play, and the loss WAS DO TO the Over-Aggressiveness of Jack Tatum! “Holy Toledo,” love hearing that Raider announcer again…LOL.
Tatum EARNED his moniker, "The Assassin". A real football player. Should be in the Hall of Fame.
There is a huge difference between being a hitter and what Tatum was. He was a terrible thug and he showed no remorse after crippling a man. He should have been incarcerated for his shots at Swann and Stingley. He wore a cast for every game and used to hit men in the head. He probably had something hard inside the cast. The NFL was also to b1ame for this violence because they never took any action to penalize Tatum. What redeeming values did have as a man?
