The club haven't signed a proper CB since long. Take a look at the CB incomings in the past 6-7 years. Same with the positions like cdm and LB. The ones signed weren't good enough which is resulting in our veterans being starters when they're already past their prime. The dressing room comfort started under Valverde and there's been a downhill in performances ever since. Lack of training sessions, eased up match preparations, and still a lot of dependency on the veterans. Pique clearly is past his phase of being a starting CB, Need someone to partner Araujo to take Gerard's spot.
Pique needed to leave ever since Roma, the entire defence needed to be changed but Bartomeu thought otherwise, Koeman isn't a great coach, Pique doesn't have the ability to play as he did back in the Guardiola days, he needs to retire so that we can start building our defense.
I guess his biggest issue is more mental rather than physical or age, yes, age can slow down players and finesse, but is more about adapting to circumstances and overcoming the odds.
