Telling your neighbors, who are strangers, your hours, is a horrible idea. You have no idea what type of people are living next door or the caliber of people your neighbors are socializing with. My advice: Be vigilant. Be lowkey - do not attract attention to yourself by being loud when you are coming and going. Be polite to your neighbors, but don't be overly friendly and don't allow them to get too familiar with you. If you want to confuse people about when you're actually home, leave a pair old, men's shoes outside your door and leave a talk radio station on. Leave your curtains and blinds closed, but set your lights on a timer to go on and off. I suggest changing the timer's schedule, everyday.

Thanks @RR - all good suggestions and good for us to clarify- if you are friends/family of the neighbors then watching out for each other is beneficial. Strangers or short term (just moved in) people are not a good risk to overshare.

@@FinelyRevealed ok. I agree with that. If you have a preexisting relationship with your neighbors, by all means, watch each other's backs. Now, if my neighbors are elderly, I would be more likely to befriend them. The great thing about elderly neighbors is that they are usually home all the time and they love to be nosey! 😁

There are various kinds of "portable" door locks you can get that you could use with just about any apartment door and would be fine even if you can't/don't want to make any alterations to the fixed structure.
