Smith & Wesson SW22 Victory Ejection Issue - Solved! [360°VR]

  • Since receiving the Smith & Wesson SW22 Victory I have been having ejection issues. Sometimes it got as bad as every 3-4 shots fired and I would have to pull the slide back a little to clear the feeding path of a shell casing. Being the most accurate of the handguns that I have, it was really an annoying shame as it was not seeing any use because of this. So...I took it upon myself to do a little gunsmithing and finding out what the issue was.
    After reading everything I could in the manual and on forums and watching MANY TH-cam videos, I was pretty sure that I would be able to fix it myself. My last attempt yielded okay results giving me about 6-8 shots fired without an issue, but I was still not able to get through a full magazine without a jam. Knowing that I was heading in the right direction, I went a little further (as seen in this video) and it now works flawlessly! Over 200 rounds fired today and not a single casing got jammed or a failure to fire.
    On top of all of that, in 20 rounds I had a grouping of less than an inch at about 6 metres (20 feet). In 100 rounds I had a grouping of just over 3 inches and the bullseye was just an open gap in the target.
    So if you are having ejection problems with your Smith & Wesson SW22 Victory then give your welded on ejector a couple taps outward and see what happens!

    I got a SW22 Victory about a month ago and it jammed multiple times with every magazine. I watched this video, followed the instructions and what a difference. I've run over 200 rounds through the pistol without a failure. Thank you.

    HI, Ninja. I had the same FTE problem on my out of the box Victory. The gun would FTE every third round or so. So, I disassembled the gun and did a complete deep cleaning and also took a pair of needle nose pliers and bent the ejector piece ever so slightly (just a skosh) toward the interior. Then I spot oiled the slide. Then the next day, shooting the same Aguila high velocity ammo, shot eight magazines full with no failure issues. Thanks for the advice. I now have the great gun I had hoped for.

    So I did the fix you showed. Went out to the range. Shot 60 rounds of high velocity, Federal "Semi-Auto", lead solid, hollow point, standard velocity. Not one ejection problem with 60 rounds, slow or rapid. Thank you!

    Just got a Victory the other day. Went to shop with a friend who bought one. While paperwork was being completed I kept holding one and I was sold. Really didn't need another gun, but. Down at the range he put 100 rounds through his without a glitch. My Victory on the other hand couldn't fire 3 rounds in a row without jamming. I wasn't a happy camper. All ready to send it back to factory when I came across your video. Made the adjustment. Just blew off 150 rounds without one jam. Where do I send the $$$$$ . S&W better start paying you. Thanks

    Thanks man. I bought this gun for my son’s birthday. You can imagine the disappointment when it kept jamming, literally on every shot
    . Followed your advice and a birthday disappointment was transformed into a few hundred rounds of shooting with no more jams. Thanks again!

Thanks to you, we solved the problem! It became a pleasant weapon to shoot with! Thank you so much and hello from Luxembourg!

    I've had the same problem since brand new. I tried your remedy and still the same problems. The gun shop I bought it from tried to fix it same problems. I brought all the parts that Tandemkross sales to fix the problems... All I have is nothing but an expensive piece of junk. Smith and Wesson's quality is not there. They just want to mass-produce and forget about a good firearm. I would not recommend this gun to anyone. My friend has a Ruger that will shoot any long rifle bullet put in it. Flawless gun. Mine is the laughing stock at the range.

    This is a follow-up to my lengthy comment added on about November 16, 2020 in which I described a very high rate of FTE with 8 different kinds of test ammo. Following that I sent the piece back to S&W. I received My SW22 Victory back from S&W customer support about 4 weeks after they received it instead of the 6 to 8 weeks a rep. told me to expect. Took it to the range today and fired 50 Federal Match rounds and 50 CCI std Velocity rounds. Round 98 failed to feed for some reason (not a FTE). The repair summary said only "Repaired extractor", Repaired ejector." I'm considering that Smith solved the problem.

      Glad S&W fixed it for you. I'm pretty sure they performed the same "fix" that Ninja described. This issue is the welded ejector piece; it's hard to hold tight tolerances when welding something that small. As a result, they get some that are not quite right. It's a design flaw. But a small one and correctable. I had trouble with mine and fixed it myself per Ninja's info.

    Just watched your video and I'm hoping your advice fixes my ejection issue which is the same thing being reported here. I was so damn depressed when I bought my Victory gun, headed to the range, loaded up some CCI Mini Mag ammo and the freaking fourth round failed to eject. I cleared it and it happened on the ninth round. So damn frustrating buying a brand new gun and you already have to fix it before you can reliably use it. S&W should be ashamed with this. So do I push the ejector inward or outward? It seems like it's a mix after reading some of the comments below.

    I got mine recently and tried 8 different cartridges. It only had ejection problems on 2 of them: Federal Autocycle and CCI Mini Mag Round Nose. The other 6 (Rem Golden Bullet, Rem Thunderbolt, Win SuperX, Norma Tac22, CCI Mini Mag hollow pt, and these 40 year old Federal I got from a late uncle) had no problems at all.

    I know this is 7 years old now. But I picked up a Victory 22LR late last week. Took it out today and it would falel to eject every 2nd or 3rd shot! Brought it back to the gun store where I purchased they said it was to dry (even though I lubed it per the manual the night before) and he greased it up with Preppers Choice White grease. Will take it back out tomorrow to see if the grease helped. Loved the way it felt when it got a round down range. Dead center bullseye with my small splatter targets at 15 yards with basic sights (I got the bare bones Victory Ma Compliant)

    I had the same problem with my new SW22. I wasn't going to use the pistol for a while, so I opted to return it rather than risk any damage to the ejector. After repairs and a two week turnaround, the pistol now ejects flawlessly. A little more testing at the factory prior to shipping would make for happier customers.

    I recently purchased a Victory and it shot great the first time at the range. I was using CCI Mini Mags, 40g and 1235fps. No stovepipes or fail to loads. Next two trips to the range, I was firing Federal Champion 36g, 1260fps and Federal Target Grade 40g, 1200fps, bulk ammo. I was getting fail to eject, stovepipes, every 5th round. After seeing this video and another one that showed what the problem is, I adjusted the Ejector guide to 0.026" toward the center of the barrel. I'm measuring the distance between the bolt and the Ejector guide. Before I bent the Ejector guide it was 0.005". I just returned from the range after firing 200 rounds split 50/50 between the two Federal bulk ammo with no stovepipes. Thank you for the video

    Thank you for the video advise. I purchased a Victory two years ago and have tried several things to fix the same problem. Shot it this past weekend out of boredom and it brought back the disappointment. With it fresh on my mind I started searching the internet for answers once again and found your site. I disassembled and checked the distance from the right exterior slide to the farthest most point being .361 thousands, slightly bent it out to .371 thousands. Reassembled and fired over one hundred rounds without a malfunction. I believe this is the cure, normally it would catch the empty brass two or three times per clip full. Thanks again!

    Here's a mystery for you Victory owners, one that has even stumped the support help at Smith&Wesson. They have never heard of this problem. I have a new Victory with, of course, two new 10-round mags. But ... the last cartridge in each mag won't fire. I can pull the trigger and hear the pin operate. I can pull the slide and eject the cartridge. I'll even load that last cartridge into an empty mag so that it will be the first to be fired and it fires just fine. Weird, huh? It's always the last cartridge in each mag. I shot 150 rounds today at the range, which equates to 15 mags, so that should prove that this problem is consistent. And I only had one instance that a cartridge wouldn't fire that wasn't the last in the mag. Ejection was never an issue for any round. So ... anyone have any theories? S&W is sending me a new coil and follower for one mag to see if that might solve things. And I doubt it's the ammo since I chose it based on recommended brands (Aguila, Super Extra, High Velocity). And even if this ammo is not recommended, why would a malfunction only occur in the last round of each mag, mag after mag after mag???

    Notseen Ninja, thanks for the tip. I got a Victory 3 weeks ago, ordered a Tandemkross Trigger and Halo for it and put on a Romeo5 red dot. I had the same FTE issues and was totally pissed. I tried 5 different ammo loads from Aquila, Federal, and CCI. 36 gr, 38 gr, and 40 gr. Nothing feed properly. Most would FTE about every 3 rounds. The Federal AutoMatch was the worst, which was a bummer because I've got lots of it. Came home, searched TH-cam, found your video and made the adjustment on the ejector. Went to the range last night with just my AutoMatch and it ran like a top! Shot over 100 rounds with NO FTE. I'm sure S&W has good reasons for welding in this piece, but from a manufacturing best practices approach for an item that evidently needs to have tight tolerances, it's not reliable. Otherwise, I love my Victory now. Kudos for posting this.

We called Smith & Wesson. They......immediately knew what was wrong...but didn't tell us what it was. They immediately sent us a shipping slip......we sent it back, they repaired it....and we got it back.....but it took a month. The "repair form" that they shipped back with it......under the heading :Repairs" and "Replaced" is blank.

    Appreciate the video and steered me in the right direction. Sent mine back to S&W and had the "fix" my chambering/ejection problem - or so they said. Still won't chamber and seems there's a QC issue with their magazines - mine are OEM (only ones I know of) and my rounds won't stack evenly and bind and won't chamber - all 3 of them. Supposedly, there's a video out here that someone did with the same problem and he fixed his with some gentle tweaks with needle nose pliers and some minor finessing on the edges with a honing stone. I'm will to to give that a try as it's been 3 trips to the range, with 5 different mfg's of ammo and a complete tear down and clean of the mag's to no avail. If anyone has had the same experience, knows of a fix (aside from sending something back to S&W again) or of the vide, much appreciated!

    WW!
    I used your video to help me figure out some stuff.
    I watched your vid because I was having extraction problems. Your fix didn't fit because the aperture was running dead center between the rails. I just cleaned it better and had a much better range day today. But, I shot my Victory a lot today. Like fast. It for sure got it hot.
    Unlike before, when I cleaned it this time, I saw your exact same problem while checking the action.
    I never knew to look before I saw this video, but was having extraction issues. So props to you my ninja! I was pre-lernt.
    The issue just came up today, noticed after shooting about 600 rounds in 2 hours. At the ends we were doing 20 round runs as fast as we could.
    When I got home that aperture was bent exactly as you describe. I noticed it while cleaning it. So it's not really scientific or anything. I could have bent it while cleaning it. I want to doubt that tho. That is not how I treat my things.
    I think that means, shooting a Victory hard can warp that aperture, or, cleaning it wrong can bend it.
    I think you should do what this ninja says and check that guide every time you care. It can change and you wont know it unless you look.

    Well this is a great concise video on what should not be a problem to begin with. I read everything I could on 22 range pistols. It was between this and the MKIV. I chose this about 4 years ago and what a mess. I replaced numerous parts with Tandem Kross goodies but it still had these FTE issues. I then bent my ejector back .5 mm and it worked like a charm. Then Covid hit and I did not go to the range. Well back at the range a few days ago and I forgot I had performed this mod. Ran 140 rounds of 40 gr. Mini Mags through it and not one stove pipe. Your video is a must view for every Victory owner. Hopefully, SW has resolved this issues on their newest production. Thanks

    HI! I did the same fix, but... Does the slide goes a bit harder because of that fix? It definitely does with mine. Won't that break the ejector or the slide itself, because of friction between bent ejector and the slide?

    I did this procedure and it worked but now its doing it again...my gun has less than 100rounds and only a month old.. I know Smith &Wesson knows about this issue so why do they not remedy the problem so I don't have to go thru the trouble of shipping it to them...wish I'd bought something else.

    Had this same issue and this fix worked. The instruction is not clear though so kinda tried bending both directions lightly.The gun wouldn’t eject properly after every other round and it was new right out of the box! Rather than causing too much inconvenience sending it back to S&W, I gave this a try-now I shot 330 rounds straight with no problem! Thank you!

    There are two issues. You have an ejector and an extractor. My victory lost the extractor spring and pin. Result was it would not fully cycle.

    Video not so good, but info on the issue is fantastic. I'm having a close issue but not sure yet, however I'll check my ejector alignment. Thank you! My problem is the bolt gets stuck and won't slide back more than 1/4 inch from the barrel face. I have to take apart and fiddle with it and the hammer. Once disassembled the slide works fine so many the hammer cycle gets out of wack and won't let the bolt slide back.

      Same issue here. Happened several times, take it apart, put it back together and it works. But can’t figure out what the definite cause is. I guess I’ll call S&W for some help.....?

      @@lanegardner6004 yah ! me too ! depressing to go new in box off shelf to range starteed at every third then every other and within two mags every round not ejecting and getting jammed with the new round. I will look at the ejector (not-a-gunsmith) and see if a little tiny bend will do. S&W should be on top of this better.

    • @arn3571
      @arn3571 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your bolt getting stuck is a non-issue & you don't need to disassembly to correct it. What you are experiencing is a robust recoil spring, hammer in down fired position and small gripping surface to retract the bolt back. Grip the cocking serrations and give the bolt a brisk rack back, you won't break the pistol. I just purchased a Victory and I dry-fired, like you described I could only rack the bolt a 1/4 inch, dissembled the pistol and it was easy to rack. Researched online further and ran into a post stating it's tough to rack because of the robust recoil spring, fighting the hammer spring and small gripping surface on he bolt. All is well.

    Guys do not run high velocity ammo in this gun! Standard velocity is what it likes and what smith calls for! I ran some mini mags and it would blow my extractor right out of the gun to much pressure! And that little bastard is hard to find once it shoots out of there lol !

      My brand new Victory Performance Center model has this issue. Have not tried the fix. Interesting though is that it will only run the high velocity ammo fine, and will not run the standard velocity ammo. I have another victory that runs everything.

    That's what mine was doing, new gun, you couldn't get through a clip without it stove piping 4-5 times, now it will shoot any ammo without jamming. I tried them all before the fix and after the fix.

    What kind of ammo are you using? Is it match ammo which is often sub sonic? If so, it may well be the ammo cannot fully cycle the pistol. For what it's worth I have a S&W Victory and shoot Federal bulk ammo; I have not had one failure of any type. I love this pistol. Not a fan of your video technique.

    • @NotseenNinja
      @NotseenNinja  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use CCI Mini-Mag High Velocity hollow point rounds. Never had a problem cycling in any other firearm which is why I knew there was a problem. Just in case, I also shot some Winchester bulk pack through it too (which is generally dirtier, but still a decent enough round) and still had the same problem ejecting. I got the firearm second hand, so it is possible that the original owner messed it up somehow, but a slight bend of the ejector fixed the issue completely.
      Demonstrating anything is very difficult in 360, but I am still trying to figure out a way that works...eventually I will improve my technique with it!

      Yeah, it is welded on for some reason. It was a bad choice on Smith & Wesson's part and I think a definite design flaw. Worse even then the takedown screw that loosens very quickly while shooting. There are some definite flaws with this gun, but when it is working it is quite accurate and very fun to shoot and train people with.

    I just bought mine today and was bitterly disappointed on the range. I couldn’t get more than two shots off without a jam. A couple were so bad I had to take it down completely to get the casings out. The fix looks promising but I’m a but leery of bending things in there without being a bit more sure. It was hard to see exactly what you were doing on the video. I see where the ejector is, but am I bending it inward or outward.

    • @PintoSixty
      @PintoSixty 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Frank. Did you ever get a response on this? Or were you able to discern the correct bending direction on your own? I'm assuming that he means to bend the extractor toward the outside of the gun, not toward the center of the slide (or the middle of the gun). Am I correct?

    I just bought mine a few days ago (4yrs after your video)and had the same problem right out of the box, this doesn't seem like an isolated incident...S&W obviously is aware of this issue but is some how taking Americans patronage for granted , I feel bad because I chose this gun over a Glock G44 because I trusted S&W over Glock . You don't buy a product to start working on it out of the box or even to send it back to get it fixed before ever using it only to have it returned still not working...its a poor shame S&W to buy your product and be literally stuck with something that doesn't work and it can't even be able to return it for another. Hopefully your recommendation will work...I don't trust sending it back to them will resolve anything given all the stories I've seen with the gun doing the same thinking. Thanks for caring more than S&W who won't do better quality control and resolve this issue.

    Wow . . I didn't know the ejector was welded in place, I would much rather have it attached with a screw so it could be replaced if needed, with out having to send it in. I'm still going to purchase one as soon as I can find one with the threaded barrel, they seem to be the hardest to find. good looking pistol and nice job on locating and fixing the problem.

    • @NotseenNinja
      @NotseenNinja  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking the same thing when I started having the issue so I took a closer look. That made me look at my other Smith & Wessons to see if that is just their way. On the S&W M&P 22 the ejector has 2 rivets holding it in place, but on the M&P 9, 40, and 45 it is screwed into the polymer housing. I kind of feel like welding a small part that experiences intense bursts of hot and uneven cooling temperatures is not a good idea...but I am not a gunsmith or metallurgy guy.
      The threaded barrel I found to be nearly impossible to locate! I was going to hold off too and I called around to see if stores could even get it for me and the only response I got was "we can call you if we get it in." I wanted it though because it is a freakishly accurate firearm, so I had to just pull the trigger on a non-threaded on. Still in my mind is upgrading to one of the Volquartsen barrels which look a lot cooler and are threaded, but those are over $200 so it is a pretty steep purchase for a $400 firearm. The option is there for when I/we feel like upgrading though!

      Notseen Ninja Yes I've looked at those Volquartsen barrels and they look very nice, they are a bit expensive. I'm sure they are worth it. Tandemkross makes a trigger for the Victory that is supposed to give you a 3 1/2 lb. pull for $40. that will be my first
      upgrade.

    • @NotseenNinja
      @NotseenNinja  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really short travel distance and a much lighter trigger................you just made me spend $40!
      I have found that I am more consistent with my trigger pull on a flat trigger too. I will update when it arrives!

    I purchased a SW22 Victory in October 2020. Went to the range to zero the red dot sight. Had a FTE about every 3 to 4 rounds. Tried three different types of ammo. (The manual said to avoid Hi Velocity ammo.) Went back to the dealer and described the problem. He said to give it a good cleaning and lube it a little wet. He gave me bags of 8 different types of test rounds. Followed dealers instructions and took the test ammo to the range. Centurion 1280 FPS and SK pistol match functioned flawlessly. All the other ammo failed to eject and or to feed between 40% and 100%. I decided it was unacceptable to pay what I did for a tuned up Performance Center competition pistol and be restricted to using only a couple of specific cartridges, especially in the current scarce ammo environment.
    Two different gun dealers told me it was not unheard for a particular pistol to be very picky about what ammo they would function with.
    I called S&W customer support and attempted to describe the problem in detail and asked if the Victory had a history of functioning properly only with certain ammo. The person I spoke to was not discourteous, but did not seem disposed to listen to a lengthy description of the problem. I was directed to return just the weapon, no mags, etc. I called a couple of weeks after Fed Exing the pistol back for a status check. I was informed that I should expect a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks for a repair. Not happy.
    While waiting my pistol's return I have tuned all 5 of the mags since some of my online research indicated burrs and slightly out of tolerance lips can cause the types of malfunctions I was having.
    I'm not sure if I would have attempted the fix described here even had I seen it before returning the piece. Would have been afraid of possibly breaking off the ejector and voiding the warranty. If I get by pistol back around New Years and still have the same problem I might try it.
