    Nice job guys, now I'm going to have to buy a Tropic Sweet. It's a good thing this is the last apple video I don't have room for to many more trees, LOL. good video looking forward to the next.

      Thanks David. Yeah, definitely the best tasting of the summer apples. BUT, it doesn't store long at all. So you need to pick them early and eat them quick! Sorry to add another apple tree to your list....kinda...

      Hey Praveen! This one needs a pollinator. It's pollinated by the Anna apple tree, so we have it planted about 10 feet from our Anna.

    Hi there, thanks for making this video! What do you do for disease control and pest control in AZ? Thanks!

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We don't really do much for disease as it's very rare to see any on the trees with our dry weather. The major exception would be Texas Root Rot, but there is no treatment for that. Pests are primarily birds and squirrels, but they really don't do too much damage to the apple crops, so we don't do any mitigation for those either.

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      On the property you're seeing in this video we had them about 12' apart. They can be kept closer than that if need be as you can prune them back to fit a smaller space.

    Great job on the videos. In year 9 of my micro orchard in Las Vegas with Babcock Peaches, Burgundy plums, Asian Pears, Katy & Globe Apricots, Red Flame & Thompson grapes. Your points are spot on for us in here in Las Vegas (2460 ft. el) Have everything mulched with chunky wood mulch which the chickens constantly rearrange. Could you go over how many times a week you irrigate the fruit trees and roughly how much water do you apply per tree during a watering? (We're having some of your 110F+ temps this week) How does that change from Feb, March, April, May, June, July, Aug, Sept? Thanks for inspiring others to grow in the desert!.

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey B.A. Wow, congrats on year 9! I bet you're seeing some amazing harvests being that far along. As for irrigation, here is what we do; All trees (not vines) have 3, 4gph drip emitters. Vines/bushes usually have 1, 4gph emitter. Summer we irrigate 2-3 times per week for 3 hours (roughly 36 gallons per tree). Winter it drops to no more than 1 hour every other week or so unless we're particularly dry or warm. Glad you found us and would love to see pics of your orchard. We're on FB if you want to share.

    Mine has just started flowering a second time. Young tree it did bear a few fruit bbut none made it completely and it has just started flowering again at the start of summer here. Have you experienced this?

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We've experienced the same with young apple trees as well. The first couple of years can be hit or miss with fruit set, to that may be what happened with that first round. It may also be that the flowers were not pollinated, tried to set and the unpollinated fruit didn't "take". As for a second round of flowering, that does happen from time to time here as well. Usually it's a matter of the weather patterns "fooling" the tree into thinking it's time for flowering. We've seen it happen anywhere from late Winter through Fall. However, the only time we've had fruit make it all the way to ripe is when it sets in the late Winter/early Spring and ripens in early Summer.

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm

      Hi Vijay. I'm not sure how well this would do commercially. They tend to bruise very easily off the tree, so they won't travel well. I haven't checked the weight of the fruit, but it's very similar to a small Gala, Golden Delicious or Granny Smith apple.

    Sir, what an awesome video. Will you be kind enough to let me know why the fruit size remained smaller as you showed in the video. Dec. the suitable month for transplanting in my area is approaching. So, please also tell on what rootstock it has been raised and what should be planting distance for it from plant to plant and row to row. What is frost month in Arizona desert and whether it is a commercial variety, enjoys demand in the market. Kindly offer your comments with regard to scope of Gala apples in hot climates which however holds the tag of commercial variety and is demanding in the market. The matter of growing apples in mild winter areas with quite hot climates in summers is full of all constraints and suspicions and very confusing with regard to suitable varieties vis a vis popularity and demand in the market. In which month you experienced frost damage. Thanks Sir. Welcome and heartiest regards.

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Vijay. The fruit size is determined primarily from thinning (or lack thereof). Typical fruit size for this variety is similar to Gala. I don't know what root stock our grower uses as he's local to the Phoenix area and uses his own root stock. Our frost months here in AZ are December - February where we can reach as low as 20 degrees F. Our most challenging month for frost damage would be in February as the tree has already started flowering by this time. I think Gala apples would be a much better commercial variety as they keep much longer and are harder to bruise than Tropic Sweet. We posted a video recently that showed a good fruit set on our Gala fruit tree here on the farm, so it may be worth considering for you. I hope this helps!
