How The RoboCop Movies Changed

  • Robocop as a series consists of three films made from 1987 to 1993, and a remake from 2014. It’s tone and intended audience changed, sometimes radically, between movies and especially between the original series and the remake. Here, I’m looking at how and why.
Robocop, broadly, is about a policeman who gets gunned down by villains and rebuilt as a cyborg by an amoral corporation. OCP are, really, the driving antagonists of all four films, utilising Robocop as the PR pre-game to taking valuable defence and security contracts that will make their corporation king.
All four outings feature Alex Murphy, aka Robocop, dealing with life being not quite the man he once was, but also an incredible force of justice, and the thematic backbone of the series is the juxtaposition of man and machine together. Murphy is limited by directives and by direct control, but Robocop, you might argue, is limited by Murphy.
    Films Mentioned:
    Robocop (1987), Robocop 2 (1990), Robocop 3 (1993), Starship Troopers (1997), Robocop (2014).

The "western" idea didn't resonate with me. I get the idea of a "western" that doesn't take place in the western US of the 19th century ( _Firefly/Serenity_ takes place in space in the future!). I think there has to be a "frontier" element to the setting that drives the plot. On what frontier is _RoboCop?_
To me, _RoboCop_ is more reminiscent of a sci-fi version of a _Brubaker_ or _Serpico,_ where a "cog" inside a "broken machine" has to try to find a way to bring some measure of reform to a corrupt system. Malcolm Gladwell dubs this style of a story an "eastern," although I don't know how much currency that carries

I always had a hunch about 1 and 2 being westerns, but couldn't name it. Another well-deserved point for this channel. All Bodicker, Kane, and the Old Man bask in the idea that they are above the law. In the end only the Old Man gets away with his life as Robo brings the first two down for their crimes. Again, as mentioned in the video, the 3rd as the film to bring the Old Man and OCP to justice is so obvious. And the fact that the trilogy is not done justice, by not going that way, is so sad.

I never thought the jaw of Robocop was vulnerable. They keep the human look to help interact with the public. But especially the original, Peter Wellers face looks stretched. The scenes of Alex Murphy shows a very this, angular face and jawline. Robocops face is obviously larger. I always assumed OCP skinned Murphys face and stretched it over a titanium skull. Remember when Bob Morton argued against saving the left arm in the original? "I thought we agreed on total body prosthesis, now loose the arm."

As I understand it, the way RoboCop moves in 2014 is [basically] what was originally intended for Peter Weller's take on the character, but the costume was so constrictive, they had to rethink their entire approach, resulting in the slow, hydraulic, and deliberate movements that ultimately lend to the campiness of the film.

6:26 Basil Poledouris' film scores that matter most to the films they're in are "RoboCop" and "Starship Troopers"? Both scores are truly epic, but are you serious? "Conan the Barbarian" is the most monumental film score of all time and not only was it vastly more important to the film, it was vastly more important to cinematic history than all his other efforts combined.

I saw Robocop in 1987 at a local theater. Ever since, I've called it a "ground-breaking" film because it was unique and never done before. Not the premise; rather the TV ads for the Jarvik 7 Heart, the 2000 SUX, "I'd buy that for a dollar," the News Casts and other things. It was the way in which it was presented that was groundbreaking. I believe it changed the future of SciFi. And who doesn't HATE Clarence J. Boddiker yet LOVE Red Foreman? You say Western; that takes me to another Cyborg from the 70s played by Yul Brynner: West World. Ain't it all grand? Carefully crafted Sci Fi can lead to Sci fact... scary

The thing you keep mentioning about the mouth area, the face is preserved skin of Alex Murphy's face stretched over a metal skull. Just a way to give the Alex Murphy brain a recognisable face if he sees himself in the mirror, and to make him appear more human, it being exposed does not in any way make it a weak point. This is mentioned in Robocop 2 when his wife is brought in and he asks her to touch his face saying "They made this to honour him" the helmet is just further protection because despite having a bullet proof skull there are still sensitive points on the outside on the upper portion of the head, and his brain is in there.

I interpreted Robocop having two central messages. One you already covered. It was about someone discovering his humanity. However I think the central theme was actually anti capitalism. It showed the worst parts of the privatization of government, the greed in capitalism. It was a brilliant satire that got lost in the dumbed down remake.

Shooting Robocop in the jaw would be quite difficult from a distance and, more importantly, wouldn't accomplish anything. It's implied (and confirmed by the authors) that Murphy's face is just a skin mask stretched over a completely robotic head, and it's only there to prevent Robocop from goin' insane - OCP scientists thought the disconnection between the human brain and a completely artificial body would be too much to bear for the subject. Even Murphy's eyes are artificial - when he takes off his helmet, he still has "Robovision" and all its functions.

I might be one of the few people who legitimately enjoyed both the original Robocop and the remake. I feel they were both exploring different things with the same theme. But I didn't question much when I watched Robocop one: it made it clear that it was satire, and more like a comic book. It didn't need to be realistic science fiction. But the remake wanted to you believe it could be true which resulted in me questioning some of the decisions made in the film. Like: if emotions cause the hardware to desynch with the wetware, wouldn't that be considered a fail? Could you imagine if you had an artificial heart using that technology? RIP.

Is it dark? Yes. Does it "treat itself seriously"? Yes. Why? First because world around us is surprisingly darker than it was in 1987, when we live under the shadow of mushroom cloud. Second because we didn't understand message Robocop 1987 was hiding under satire.

Cain was enough delusional already so for him it was pretty muchg the loss of his wang that he mourned. ^^

    • @hthrun
      @hthrun 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Plus shooting someone in the jaw, especially a moving target, is extremely difficult. Guns have a lot of recoil, some more than others, and hitting what you're aiming at, even with a stationary target, isn't as easy as movies make it look. That's why officers are trained to shoot at the torso as opposed to an appendage, it's a bigger target. Shooting at an appendage is pretty much a guaranteed miss. Like shooting at tires on a moving vehicle, it won't work in real life.
That said, this is a movie. Since we're using movie logic, maybe a shot in the jaw would work...

    • @UpperDarbyDetailing

Apart from some fake limbs and armor, not much is different from real life

      @White-Van Helsing o.O ok consoomer.
You don't have to like it when a studio serves you a plate of dog shit, no matter how many bells and whistles they festoon it with.
I loved TFA, nostalgia bait that it was. I actually enjoyed parts of TLJ too, plate of dog shit that it was.
Ros was fucking insulting. As was TLJ, but still.

You could put it out today, and it would hit just as hard. But only to those who understand what's going on.

@White-Van Helsing I was almost positive that's what we were talking about. Certainly what I was talking about w my "nihilistic parody"
For the record, the OT is art. The prequels are parody, the new ones are nihilistic parody

Robocop (1987) is one of those classic movies that is near perfect. Also, it's a near documentary on 2018 Detroit.

      Except modern Detroit is worse.

One of the most interesting things about the movie is how prophetic it was, although since that has little to do with cinema I can see how it got overlooked.

Have any of you ever been to Detroit?
You kids talk about it as if it's a huge ghetto. You do realize there are richer areas and commercial areas, right?

Robocop is eerie in it's prescience, on it's base level it's a cheesy cop revenge movie, but i think it is much deeper than that, something about losing our humanity in the name of progress and the ultimate descent into barbarity that causes.

Robocop is too unrealistic for me to enjoy. I just can't imagine Detroit being such a nice place as portrait in the movie.

Way too many white people in the movie to be Detroit.

Now I just have to found this company called Universal Buyer Commodities or UBC. And sell a new product called the DroidLawman to the Detroit police.
