I like the lines in Pam A but a love the more warmer colours in Pam B. Pam B feels more like an old deck that have been used alot and laying in the sunshine (like old sun bleached paper). There are some off white/light greyish skies in the Pam B deck. I wish it would have more colours like the Pam A. Both decks are beautiful in their own way. I have many RWS Tarot decks but the one who looks exactly the same in colouring and linework as Pam A is "Tarot of A.E. Waite - Premium Edition" from AGM. It even has the crackle backs. Thank you so much for this interesting video.// Love and light from Sweden 🙏✨💖
Yeah I know - it’s absurdly good. I keep meaning to find a way to scan it - for Saskia and others. I don’t own a scanner though…. Thank you so much for watching and writing, dear Simon! ❤️🙏🏻
Hello! I must say that I love your knowledge of the different Pam decks. I found this video informative and educational. Thanks to you I now know how to tell Pam A and Pam B apart. I looked through all of my RWS decks to see The Sun's "Oh, shit!" squiggle :) . Keep up the great content; love your channel and videos
Deck envy is probably a requirement here! Lol! And SERIOUSLY - I hate that aspect of all of this. For the longest time I didn’t make this video because it seemed too obnoxious - but sharing the cards is much more important I think.
@@MindfulTarot it’s cool, Esther!!!! When I think of what I’ve learned from watching your channel……. You send out so much educational information and now you’re getting something back….. which you are also sharing with us!!!! When I bought my vintage Aquarian…. Guess how I figured out it was a 1984 not a1971 as the seller had advertised?????
It’s interesting - I’ve always loved the King of Pents because it felt like he was growing into his throne, which feels kind of on brand for him. 🤣 That Original Rider-Waite Tarot Pack was my first deck, so I’ve always had a soft spot for it. It’s weird, though, because I think it has the “oh shit” like - so I wonder if it somehow uses the coloring of B with the lines of A? Feel free to make a video comparing those. 🤣 (My favorite “vintage” coloring of this deck is the Pink Ankh version. That was my happy find.)
@@thefoolsjournal ooh I have a crappy 1990s pink ankh - tried to win one recently on eBay and no such luck - would love to see yours and why you dig it. Have you done a video? - and yeah - I’m so curious now about the Pam B and the Original, I think I do have to do a comparison.
Something I noticed (that has never drawn my attention before) is how in the Two of Wands, the ocean water is very much blue, but in the Three of Wands, its yellow-orange, almost giving it the look of a desert. How interesting...
You’re absolutely right. The water looks like desert here - the mountains look like water. The wands themselves are still as alive as ever (the little leaves on each staff) - but the life-giving promise of the waters has seemed to dry up.
Thanks so much! This was so helpful, and fun to be able to pause for each card and compare them against my collection. It appears my Blushing Fool is closer based on the Pam A and the Radiant Wise Spirit is closer to the Pam B. The differences in the facial expressions is quite striking.
This was so wonderful. I got out my RWS Centennial deck to follow along and see where it followed the A and where it followed the B. Thank you so much!
@@silvermooncat626 I love mine! Tho, it was a shock that the Centennial was artificially made to look aged, when I saw how brightly colored the Pam A is. The Pam A looks more like the RWS I had back in the '80s when I first started to read tarot. Who knew?
Thank you sooo much for that! I don't know if it was in response to my comment recently that you recorded this video, but I'm so glad you did. I had no idea that the Pam A was redrawn or that the coloration was so different. Now I understand why the "Original" RWS is more green and brown. I love them both for different reasons and it's so fortunate that you have both. Thanks again 😀
Ah yes!! That was YOU! I couldn’t find the comment again (I’m really terrible at keeping on top of correspondence - although I read everything). Yes yes! I made this because of your request - finally kicked me into gear! Thank so much for your support! ❤️❤️❤️
@@MindfulTarot Well thank you so much! I've never seen a Pam B before so now I know why the new "original version" is so brown and green. I have 2 copies of it, brand new which is really smudgey and brown and an older version from the 90s which I really like. Another reason to like it is the cross hatching style of colorization. It's interesting to see how printing techniques change so I love all my versions for different reasons. I just recently picked up a vintage 70s plaid back and the card stock is so yummy I enjoy just feeling it. Thanks again, and no your vids are never too long or wordy, it's like sitting down with a friend for a chat. 😊
I'm also an owner of both the Pam-A and Pam-B. They are special decks. It's had to fully-appreciate the printing methods used in these decks. Something that cannot be easily done today. You may want to consider storing these cards in protective sleeves. You can use a larger wooden box. It feels so much safer handling the cards in this manner.
Great video. Thanks. I'd never seen an original Pam A/B. Before you even mentioned it, I recognized that the Rider Original had to have taken the coloring from that Pam B. I wish I could agree with you. An occasional greenish color is not bad, but I hate, hate, hate that Rider Original deck. Of course, part of that is it's glossy texture, but it's like all the colors are either the same or completely washed out. You really pointed that out in the knight card where there is a missing line on the horse. (I have to look at all my decks now to see if they fixed that in reproductions!) ;) Also interesting how on the Pam A, some of the court card titles are way off center, almost left justified. Goes along with the different border sizes which I love. I only started really understanding differences between Pam A and B last year when I found a Dirty Pam, which I love, (probably the only Pam B I love) but when someone had shown me the borderless Radiant Wise Spirit, I didn't know it was Pam B, I just knew it was different and I was put off by it. (Of course, that full sized deck is weird anyway because of the way they enlarged it to make it borderless. The mini deck is wonderful.) Really appreciate this video. I am curious, however, how you got your hands on both of these. You stopped short of telling us. I'm assuming because your husband is an antique book dealer you may have had an inside track. ;) Lucky you. Great score. I'm happy for you. For now, I'll just continue to get my hands on a more accessible Blue Box Blushing Fool. Not very accessible, but more accessible than these two beautiful vintage decks you've scored. Congrats. :)
Thanks so much for watching and writing! As for how I found these two gems: this is all about relentless and diligent eBay watching. Both were simply posts on eBay that for one reason or another didn’t get a lot of notice, and I was able to place the winning bid. I highly recommend using an auction sniping service(I use Auction Sniper) which gives you some control over exactly how much you want to bid, and then does the timing for you. Other than using such an online tool, there’s no magic here. It took me years to find these decks… But then I found them both within six weeks of each other. Life is just so wonderfully and terribly weird that way!
Thank you for this educational trip:) I realized that my AGM Urania deck is mostly based on PamA , even the Sun’s squiggly line is present. I find the drawing and the color palette way more beautiful - more toward sky blue looks airy and fresh and just opens up the insights:) I wonder, why do you find VI of cups creepy?
I think it’s just that PCS maybe isn’t great at drawing convincing images of children. The kiddos look a bit like dwarves, to my eye…. but that’s a good question. why DO i find it creepy?
Thank you for doing this, I much prefer the Pam A line and colours. My blushing fool seems to be the same as your Pam A. It would be amazing to have high resolution scans if you are ever able to do that. Thank you 🙏
I just love the crackle design on the backs of these cards. I wish they would use that same design on the current publications. I thoroughly really dislike the weird sort of plaid picnic-y print on the back of the US games version.
I have a fondness for those sort of retro plaid backs; i’m a particular fan of the butterscotch backs on the Angel Tarot. But, yes, the crackle is so much better.
Agreed. I've never liked those plaid backs. Was happy to find a vintage pre-copyright Sunburnt Magician with them, , but would so much prefer to find a vintage deck with roses and lilies or the crackle back. ;)
Wow! Thank you so much for doing this. You are truly blessed to have both. That is brilliant. I have to make a confession though, I'm team Pam A all the way. 100% 😉 I even prefer the color palate. You've convinced me to stop using the moniker Pixie, by the way. 😁
I mistakenly got the Original deck for the colours but it shuffles so well & delivers I have adjusted. I use with the Universal but hope the Centenial will be a more accurate record of "Gypsy's " art.
Those cards look brand new!! Beautiful pieces of history. Thanks for showing these 💚
The Pam B does show its age a bit - but yeah - I’m so fortunate!!! 🌼❤️🌺💕
@@MindfulTarot I would have liked for you to show how thick they were. I noticed they were substantially thicker

Extraordinary copies of both, but especially the Pam A! The colors are still so vivid. Thanks for showing these.
Thanks, I haven't used a RWS in a long time and it was nice to see all the familiar images so detailed.

So which version does the centennial follow more?
