I probably shouldn’t have to say this (it will be very obvious to you in the future) but pay attention to how the art style improves overtime. You’ll definitely find yourself staring at panels because of how refined and beautiful his art style gets. A lot of these drawings are utterly ridiculous
Reading OP & Berserk at the same time I think is very good because they will balance eachother out, one is generally positive with bits of darkness/heavy stuff and the other is extremely dark & heavy with bits of positivity & levity.
Perfect, just what I wanted from this reading experience, though I did just cry my eyes out at the latest volume of One Piece that I read (volume 44) so now I'm like "I need all the comedy" haha but I'm still excited to be doing Berserk alongside One Piece
My wife showed me this as she's into this 'booktube' thing, I'm not really, haha. But she knows berserk is one of my favorite stories next to the Odyssey, and I have been checking for about three weeks now for the next review and I really look forward to the next video on berserk so i can watch it with my wife. So here's hoping you're still wanting to make more of these as this video was awesome. It felt like watching a friend read one of your favorite series.
Thanks so much for watching even though booktube isn’t your thing!! I didn’t realise how dense and long the Golden Age arc is, so I had to make more time for it so I’ll be reading it and making more videos for it in March, so thanks for the patience and the kind words 😄
@HowToTrainYourGavin Take your time, the golden age arc is the most important part of the entire story and most peoples favorite so be sure to enjoy it while you read it haha. it's so interesting to see someone who isn't spoiled read and given commentary. I hope you don't get spoiled like I was when I first read it!
I’m sure a lot of people have already said this, but think of this first arc as a prologue. We go back in time next and you get to see the story that led up to the Black Swordsman arc so that should really help you have a better grasp on everything. After that everything should make a lot more sense and you’d have a better understanding of the world and characters.😊 I’m looking forward to this read-a-long! I’m using this chance to reread and catch up on the series.
I can't wait until you get to the Golden Age Arc. So many of your questions will be answered there. The Blackswordsman Arc is actually was more of a test run which the Mangaka was trying experiment with story telling in Collage and he decided to kinda push it more and flesh it out. The farther you go, you will notice a lot of the heavier themes are more reflecting on the human condition and mental mindset of each charater.
Oh man, seeing your confusion is going to be a huge full circle later. This is a HUGE story, and its taken over as such an obsession of mine as far as manga goes the last year. I cant wait to see your reaction to the story and hope you enjoy every part of Beserk!
It’s crazy how I found this channel when you started One Piece, and now you’re doing Berserk as well. These are my two favorite manga series, so this is wild to me!
I don't know if someone has said this yet, but your comment about the artwork being Dark Souls like is pretty spot on. It is on record that the Story of Berserk was a massive inspiration for From Software, the creators of Elden Ring, Bloodborne, Dark Souls 1, 2, 3, etc. Started watching during your One Piece read throughs and now that you've started with this manga as well, you're in for two wild rides.
I remember hearing about berserk when I was in high school like a 15 years ago. I thought it was just senseless violence. I got into it in my early 20’s. It is so much more I love this series. I soaked up every chapter on release whenever I could. I still do. Rip Miura
Don't worry about being in over your head! The confusion is expected. I was pretty confused initially too, but you'll get a hang of the characters and story soon enough. Berserk really does throw you into the deep end so just vibing and observing for now is probably a good way to approach it
I'm just reading throught golden age arc and my eyes have been opened to this comment... So in the words of a one boney knight "So the gears have INDEED begun turning."
Thanks for doing a chapter by chapter of Berserk. I've wanted to read it, but I know that seeing the content in it would affect me a lot. This way, I get to enjoy the story and hear your thoughts. ^_^
Just when I thought I was out of Berserk reaction/review videos... they pull me back in! So glad to hear you like it. The Black Swordsman arc isn't usually held in a high regard. Some even tell you to skip it (don't!). It sets up the overall frame for the story and is crucial to understanding it although the next arc is what defines Berserk. Don't feel bad about being confused, you will get it eventually even without further research. In fact it'll be fun to watch you interpret the plot for the first time.
Now I want to reread this series together with you and catch up again. Years ago I watched the anime and when it stopped I wanted more so I read the manga. You are right it is confussing at the beginning! I also had that when I first read it. But you get so intrigued by Guts and want to know what happened etc. And yes it is one of the darkest manga I've ever read.
The combo of One Piece and Berserk is going to really take a toil with your emotions. One is going to be emotional and uplifting, while the other is going to be emotional and depleting.
I picked Berserk to read alongside One Piece while I was on the Jaya arc, if only I knew Enies Lobby was around the corner 😂 I’d have picked something far more light instead haha
I wanted to read Berserk for the longest time. So you starting it finally geve me the motivation to do it! I think it's great. But sometimes very hard to read. Can't wait to hear what you think about it!
Welcome to the Insanity that is BERSERK! I hope you enjoy the series, and continue reading it! It is truly a magnificent series, and I look forward to your review of the next arc, 'The Golden Age Arc"
I haven't read Berserk myself. However, I'm really glad you're enjoying the medium of manga. I don't know if you've read or heard of this mangaka before his name is Junji Ito. I recommend Uzumaki by him if you enjoy long form manga stories. However, Mr. Ito has a plethora of short story collections to choose from: Deserter,Shiver and his short story collection Frankenstein are recommendations from me. I really enjoyed you're vlog in the cabin video since that's how I found your channel in the first place. 😊❤📚
I'm hoping to read a whole bunch of Junji Ito in a reading vlog, perhaps nearer October for the spooky season, as his stories have caught my eye and his works look incredible! I want to see how many stories I can read in 1 video (hopefully all of them haha)
I love your review style chapter by chapter then your thoughts really makes it like you are part of the community from the beginning and it’s a fresh take on what most reviewers are doing where they do massive amounts of chapters at first to get caught up then cuts back
Berserk is pretty phenomenal man. I think out of everything I’ve read it and one piece do seem special to me. They’re my two favorites, but they’re also two men’s whole life work. I feel like you can tell they put everything they had into it. And they are actual significant achievements in the medium of comic books. Like they show what a comic book can be. That they can be just as good or even better than books and film
If you're interested, some chapters that serve as good stopping points in the Golden age arc are: The Golden Age, part 8 Ch 6 Mastster of the sword, part 1 Ch 22 Campfire of Dreams Ch 36 The Morning Departure part 3 Ch 69 The Immortal Once Again And then the arc ends on chapter 94. P.S. the Baron was the snake demon Guts killed at the end of the first chapter.
It definitely finds it stride post blackswordsman arc. U need to keep going with it. Vinland saga is another incredible mature manga series about vikings that u need to check out.
@@GavinReadsItAll mmm no I believe it still has a while to go, the manga and anime are both incredible! My favorite adult manga series. Such deep characters and worldbuilding. Definitely give it a chance in the future!!
Berserk is absolutely amazing. It's very different than One Piece but it's also one of the best of all time. I also hope you will read Hunter x Hunter in future, because it's also one of the best and is basically, in a way, a combination of One Piece and Berserk. BTW. yeah, Dark Soul & other Souls games were heavily inspired by Berserk. Miyazaki is a huge fan of Berserk! :)
I honestly love your long-style reviews. Not only do I usually use them as back ground noise when I draw, but I'm the kind of person who loves live reaction, and your attention to details even when it comes to small things is really great. Most youtuber who do this kind of video skip on the details either because they didn't notice or because of watch time, which is a shame. I can really feel the passion through you and it always makes me so happy. Keep on going like this !
I think the motivation for killing him was that he was a priest for the god hand and that guts seacrately sympathised with the people in the carrige that the baron was eating. (Im reading throgh the golden age arc)
Stoked to see more of your content. The Berserk manga is in my opinion the best work of fiction ever written and it's one of my favorite things in the world to watch people experience it from the same time
Thank you!! Also loved your video with Amber Alise, watched a good chunk of it a few days ago (didn’t want to watch too much in case of One Piece spoilers for arcs I haven’t read yet), but will watch the rest when I catch up, it was an awesome video!
Long weekend and time to catch up on housework while finally getting to dive into Beserk with you 🧡 So far you have me sold on this seinen series. Now I need you to read Dorohedoro and I can be happy
YEEEEESSSSSS, OP and Berserk my 2 favorite manga. berserk being my first tattoo, not sure what motive i get for OP. respect+ - guts has enough trauma for all of us - alot of ppl recomment reading the black swordsman arc after the golden age arc, but with the black swordsman arc you get queues to what you have to look out for in the next one, also you always have a certain feeling of pure dread above your head, while reading the next arc, which is most likely intended by miura - the snake monster is the baron who eats the ears jfyi - lots of ppl also say that berserk is glorifying violence etc. but i very much believe that its all intentional to show how truly horrifying this world they are living in is - at this point you are confused on whats going on, because guts also doesnt really know himself whats going on, and i also think that many ppl dont have names, because guts doesnt want to know their names, to not get attached to them -sadly there is no anime adaptation that does it justice, but after you read the golden age arc, you can watch the 1997 anime, which is imo the best we got so far as anime adaptations -after the golden age arc LOTS of questions will be answered, there will be new questions, but its worth it :P - A TON of franchise (soulsborne included) are inspired or influenced by berserk, its insane how many actually Next arc part 1/2 - i just checked and personally, if you want to cut it into 2 parts id recommend reading up to chapter 48 (including that) its the end of "Sparks from a sword tip", which should be according to the wiki be included in manga volume 10 (not sure if you can see that in the deluxe versions) its also almost perfectly in the middle, since the golden age arc goes until chapter 94, well part 2 would be sliightly longer, but its a big turning point in that arc soo, my comment got longer then intended, i just went with it, as your video went, just like you got with the chapters lol. im super hyped, none of my friends read stuff like that, sooo i need an outlet lol
@@GavinReadsItAll now that i think about it, 2 parts might still be hella long. You just did like 40minutes for what, 8 chapter? So 40 chapter in part 1 for golden age could turn out quite long...
Oh boy one of my favorites of all time right here. The moments from this arc that stood out to me and hooked me was when there’s the quick flash to Guts and Griffith on a battlefield and Griffith extends a hand which Guts then reaches back. It was curious to me that happened since Guts has been shown to hate human contact thus far so I really wanted more on their relationship. Next was when Guts cried after walking away. I knew exactly what Guts was feeling since it reminded me of personal problems in my life and I started crying. I was in it for the long haul at that point and don’t regret it. Hope you enjoy the following arcs!
Awesome! Cant wait to see you enjoy berserk, im sure youll get it more from the first golden age chapter (: just found you today and already waiting for more videos on berserk
I haven't finished watching yet, but so far I see you enjoy it greatly and it makes me so happy! Berserk is dark, brutal, but also hopeful. I've just finished my re-read a couple of days ago and I loved it even more than the first time. I hope you'll keep loving the series, there's so much more to come! And if you like found family-ish trope, I've got good news for you
@@GavinReadsItAll At this point I was pretty confused as well, but it will make a lot of sense in hindsight after a few arcs. Think of it as a prologue, or like a bunch of short stories bundled up to give you a feel of the world before the actual story starts. I am only half way through. I started the series when it won your manga tournament. It was always on my TBR but I never really went for it, but it won your tournament and I was like, 'well, now I have to start it', and I am hooked now but I also get spooked out and can't read too much at the same time. So I am taking my time with it and also running through it madly at the same time if it makes sense
There will be a clear midpoint/interlude (around the middle) in the Golden Age arc. It’s kind of hard to tell a specific chapter since they changed publishers so like online chapter 1 is like a bit into the golden age arc. Don’t worry, it will be clear. Otherwise, will be especially looking forward to your next review of Berserk :)
I read the first two arcs and a bit of the third a few years ago and loved it, lowkey became one of my favorite manga, but had to stop for various reasons. I've been meaning to go back for years, but kept putting it back. I also knew I would have to re-read from the beginning since there were so many details I didn't remember. This video finally gave me the motivation to do it. Look forward to reading this series alongside you, Gavin! Some thoughts having just finished the Black Swordsman arc. The Apostles are "people" (not sure how accurate it is to call them that at this point) who have sacrificed their loved ones to the Godhand in exchange for some sort of demonic power. Guts has a grudge against the Godhand, specially against one of their members. Guts calls him Griffith while the other members of the Godhand call him Femto. Based on what the Godhand said, Guts was sacrificed by Griffith in the past. The small flashback shows that they used to have a more friendly connection. Guts somehow survived, but he still has the brand of sacrifice, which means all sorts of demons and spirits are attracted to him constantly trying to kill him. Guts has built a degree of notoriety among demons as the Black Swordsman, a human who goes around killing Apostles. At this point I'm not sure whether he's also on a mission to kill Apostles or if with they're just the only way he can think of to reach the Godhand. By the way, Baron and Count are simply titles of nobility. We never get their names. In the first chapter, Guts goes to a city ruled by a Baron, who he somehow knows is an Apostle. His goal here is to kill the Baron, and he ultimately does (the Baron turns into the lizard demon Guts kills). My take on Guts so far is that deep down he's a very empathetic person, but he tries really hard to bury those feelings to keep himself sane (or as sane as possible). If he keeps acting like an asshole who doesn't care about other, no one would want to be by his side, after all, and that's exactly what he wants. As we can see in chapter 2, anyone who Guts associates dies because of all the demons always after him. Opening your heart up to others only to let it be crushed again and again as they die before your eyes because of your curse would drive anyone insane. Even then, we can see Guts is affected by the constant death around him, as much as he tries to convince both himself and others that that's not the case. Like in chapter 2 when the dead girl possesed by spirits stabs him. He clearly had the ability to prevent being stabbed, but he wavered upon seeing her. Similarly, he seemed to be affected when Vargas was executed, and there was some worry in his face when Puck went to try to save Vargas. Even though he had spent little time with both of them, that was enough to feel a bit affected by it.
So glad you're reading berserk! Idk how u plan to make videos on it but covering one arc per video like u do for one piece probably won't work out (unless you actually want 5+ hour videos 😅). Not only are the arcs very long in chapter count, but the chapters are also a lot denser than something like one piece seeing as it was serialized monthly, not weekly. Also, just in case you weren't already aware, an extreme SA violence trigger warning is in order for this series in general.
I'm already caught up with One Piece so for that I was just enjoying your reactions and opinions on it with fresh eyes. Here, I'm with you on this journey, my guy! Reading along with a story everyone has been telling me to read for over a decade. ... I'm unnecessarily stubborn.
Dont worry too much about how the reviews turn out man, on the contrary with Berserk, the rawer the reaction the better. A lot of people are usually very critical of Berserk in this beginning stage so it's kind of refreshing to hear someone praise it as much as I did myself back in the day. That being said, as the years have gone by I've realized it definitely does have some flaws if you nitpick but overall it's a very impressive feat for a 22-23 year old. I´ve always felt like Miura built Berserk masterfully in this first establishing arc. I should probably mention I watched the '97 anime before reading the manga so I ofc I had an idea why Guts is the way he is, but would've been interesting to know how I would've reacted w/o any previous Berserk experience. I never once reflected on lack of names and stuff like that, but yeah, either way, better get used to information not being spoonfed to you, it's not uncommon that Berserk deals in mysteries, a lot of the time you have to fill in the gaps yourself and sometimes we can only speculate.
Id really suggest watching the 1997 anime when youre finished with the Golden Age arc. It remains the best adaption in my opinion . It's ok to be a bit confused going into Blackswordsman, it's one of those arcs that reads a lot better on reread. Things will get clearer as you go on.
very happy to see you read berserk, your manga tourney gave me the power to push through before the end of last year, but i will def remind you that is has ALOT of dark themes and upsetting imagery, it gets less so later on but the early stuff BSA, Golden Age( namely the Wylde arc which kentarou later regretted as well s something i won't spoil but just be warned it is HORRIBLY upsetting and i know people who have dropped it due to that) so just keep that in mind!! Minor Edit: the dark souls series is inspired by berserk, especially elden ring where they have a direct area from the manga as tribute for Miura. alos idk if anyone else has said it but it's pronounced "Beh- Heh-Lit"
@@GavinReadsItAll yeah miura had a couple regrets in berserk, namely the amount of assault early on, but like i said it does get MAJORLY toned down in later stuff. Wylde is near the end of golden age so you have time before you get to it, there is also a chapter Miura Omake’d (which is like a .5 chapter that isn’t necessarily canon) because he thought he revealed too much, but honestly its an amazing chapter which I would still recommend reading (but with a grain of salt) Chapters 58-64, and 70-95-ish are where it’s the worse so I recommend steeling yourself for those, otherwise good luck !!! Minor edit: The chapter that was omake’d is technically 82-83 you’d have to read it online or in an older single volume!
Gav, please don’t think you’re over your head with Berserk! It will all become clear, I promise! There’s definitely some light in this manga but….it also gets way darker… it’s worth it tho.
It should be noted that around the end of this arc, the author, (Kentaro Miura RIP), was approached by his publisher I believe and was asked to either continue writing Berserk or stop writing Berserk and write a new manga with a famous Mangaka at the time. (I think it was the author of Dragon Ball). Miura decided to continue Berserk but now that he affectively burned a bridge that would have assuredly been successful, he decided to sit down and really make Berserk amazing, along with a good friend of his. Note: Check our Super Eye Patch Wolf's videos on Berserk after the next arc to get a good idea of the author if your interested.
@@GavinReadsItAll Just a quick correction his original publisher was shutting down and he could join a new publisher and continue berserk or work with the creator or Fist of the North Star, (Basically the manga that defined his generation of manga readers). He did choose Berserk in the end
Yes, Berserk! It's so good ... like, really, really good. I'd say more but I'm worried about accidentally going into spoiler territory. I'll just say that Berserk is a masterpiece.
Firstly, yay Berserk! Secondly, I would avoid trying to look up anything, because all you'll see is spoilers...so I know it's a bit confusing at first, but just keep on keeping on with the Manga and try to nut things out for yourself, Gavin, as honestly, once I looked up some random, tiny thing I was confused about and saw a spoiler, so I avoid it like the plague now! Puck is incredible & impacts the story more than people give them credit for. Puck helps Guts immensely, especially in the start, & brings that light-hearted, cheery (often very funny) sweetness and sillyness to the Berserk series which is that much-needed balance with all the dark, grim content. Though some sections I've found really difficult to read, it definitely doesn't come across as gratuitous, and as horribly as people are treated, everything is happening for a reason. Guts is often a hard man for sure lol, but the series is filled with so many incredible characters, all different, opposing personalities! It's an incredible series, which I'm still in the process of reading (I'm up to DE 12 now.) Berserk is utterly incredible, a masterpiece, but be prepared...it IS grim and dark as hell....you will cry, rage and upset, but there is also the balance with much sweetness, laughter, utterly charming moments, proud moments...aghhhh! I love it, and the art and story are just superb. Re. Dark Souls....yes ABSOLUTELY. FromSoft were very much inspired by Berserk in their games. I'm a massive FromSoftware fan, and have seen so many of the Berserk influences in my playthroughs of the games. Miyazaki (the director) says that many times in his interviews 🙂
I must admit I find Guts to be the most intriguing main character I have ever read, he is just a total mystery to me. The way he acts, the way he speaks, I need to uncover everything about him or my mind will not rest haha. Glad Puck is there as a sort of bright light in this dark world. And I cannot wait to cry and rage at this series, I already feel such a connection to it that I can't explain, and I just know I'm in for one hell of a ride.
@@GavinReadsItAll Ha yup, we all feel that connection with Guts and his story, he's a wonderful character! I was editing my original comment when you replied, lol, so I advised to NOT look up anything, as you'll get a multitude of spoilers. It is confusing, but I say to just keep on reading and trying to nut it all out for yourself!
Don't be so hard on yourself about not understanding things immediately. Not only did you basically get everything right but the world slowly opens up as you read. Not everything will be spelled out. Things will be open to interpretation. You weren't correct about Femto's identity but that does not matter right now. Glad to see you're enjoying Berserk. I think you will be happily surprised with the direction of the next arc.
If you want to watch Berserk. Just watch the Berserk 97 series (it covers mostly the "golden age arc" volumes 3-13ish). It has really good character development. The anime starts to deviate a little from volumes 9 onwards (off the top of my head)
okay so one of my Christmas gifts to my baby brother was this manga and I told him that you were reading OP and then you were going to read this it is also his first time reading this as well so having both of you read it would be something since i will watch this series to have more of a convo with him
You're totally right about Dark Souls being inspired by Berserk. In fact there are a few explicit Berserk references in Dark Souls, like the Ultra Greatsword, the Wheel Skeleton enemies, and a few other references that are potential spoilers
the whiplash i'm feeling going from enies lobby straight to berserk LOL it's like eating the best meal of your life and then instantly starving. (i adore both series, very excited for you)
"Where is the light in this series, like where is the light" it's there to be snuffed out ofc. When I was growing up some people became emo and cut them selves. I got into WH40k lore, read Berserk and watched Hellsing. This is the best descriptor I can give about the levels of dark this book goes to but at least I found it grounding on hard moments to see how things could be if you take away the supernatural parts of the story. Guts is very much Zoro of his own life pushing him self beyond limits that no mortal should be able to go past.
Definitely this month! I was gonna start golden age in February but didn’t realise how epic and dense it is, and I had so much going on, I thought it best to give it time and attention in a less busier month, so should be later this month, but thanks for watching, I appreciate it!
I read and became a fan of berserk before being a fan of one piece, berserk come to my life when i was a bit tired of happy endings and of heroism and levity... So i was in the right mindset jaja, was edgy as hell jaja, later keep reading dark stuff but most i either drop it or wouldn't be interested in reread, but berserker is a gem that i keep reading even after being in the mood for more hopeful things
Few things make me happier than being 2 hours straight warching your reaction for One Piece, so im all in for Berserk too. Gonna read it together with you from now on hahahah
Honestly all the picks i saw are amazing i hope you do pick those others up after youre ready for them, my advise after berserk probly hunterxhunter would be the next one to go for
Watch the anime first of hunter x hunter tho from start to finish just amazing and just is better then the manga but after the end of the anime there is still more story to read so then you could read further
Even if Guts sliced that little girl in half, he let himself get stabbed by her first. By my interpretation, he doesnt soften up over time, he was soft all along. Behind his facade, Guts is someone who cares deeply, but each time he is dragged back into harsh reality he lives in. He hates himself for not being strong enough to protect others, he hates always dragging everyone in misery that surrounds him, so he creates walls like why should I care? or its their own fault for being weak, otherwise he would just not be able to go on Berserk 1997 anime is a good watch after you have read golden age saga
Even muira said heis black swordsman arc has , eem. It gets good upon seeing his past. Also belive it ot not, berserk gets really wholesome too. BTW dar souls and demon sould are inspired by berserk in big parts. By the way check out the webtoon kubera , that has fantranslation on mangadex that are better. And its, it really doing things to my emotion, i mean its mystery too so, stuff and world i build, but yeah , so much emotions, and she somehow continues being fun but also, making me really sad and worried. In the bet way possible.
I just saw your Ennies Lobby reaction. And then i saw this and the first thing i said was “OH GOD😅😅. He wasn’t ready for the Merry. He’s not ready for this.”
first I'm glad you are reading berserk like many other also sait it is for me my favorite Manga with One Piece it's really amazing in art and also has a good created world. I just can't recoment it to everyone since it is really heavy stuff that not everyone can handle but you'll see (and saw that) yourself about the Anime it does pretty much skip the black swordsman arc (only the first episode covers a litle bit of the baron part) in general the Anime is the 2nd Arc and you shouldn't watch it befor reading it since the manga does a better job in telling the story. but it's definitely worth a watch after reading it then there are new adaptions first the 3 movies wich are fine but also just cover the golden age arc and like 30 min extra ath the end of the 3rd movie not as good to watch as the old Anime but kinda fine and it doesn't take as much time as the old anime And last and also least the 2016/17 anime adaptions just don't watch them they are horrible in every way. They butcher the story, the animations looks so bad and takes away all the emotions of the amazing drawings Miura did and even the sound is just a pain in the ears xD
Gavin since u have started with some of the best mangas in shounen ( manga or teenagers) and senin (manga for adult men) I think it is only natural for me to recommend some of the best in other genres. 1) Slam Dunk , it’s a sports manga which has been credited with popularising basketball in Japan, it can be extremely funny and at times heartbreaking as well, through victories and defeat the characters grow and learn shedding tears of joy and sorrow. 2) NANA, it is a shoujo ( for teen girls) series which at its peak was as popular as Onepiece, it has female leads that are very well written, complex and charming but also so human.
Ooo Slam Dunk I have had my eye on!! Now I have your endorsement I may hunt down the volumes now 👀 I haven’t heard of NANA so thanks for that recommendation too!
Fun fact there are actually people in the NBA who was inspired by Slam Dunk, NANA is not as popular as Berserk but I found them in a similar fashion before berserk’s resurgence in popularity, both had been listed in various blogs and posts as being some of the best manga had to offer, also you may be surprised to know that berserk is heavily influenced by shoujo ( manga for teen girls) and josei ( manga for adult women).
Don't know if you noticed but Femto is Griffith. Not the baron. Everyone calls him Femto except Guts, he's the only one to call him Griffith. Anyways, glad you're enjoying reading the series. I would say just read each deluxe volume and make video for each one, that's how I would do it.
I get very confused when I read. I have a hard time grasping the plot as quickly and when it's a setting, woo boy. Idk if it's because I lose focus or if it's my 0% spatial intelligence, but as long as we are together in this we will thrive.
I recommend not looking up anything you didn't understand. Most of your questions do get answered over time and you're liable to get spoiled if you go searching for answers
I probably shouldn’t have to say this (it will be very obvious to you in the future) but pay attention to how the art style improves overtime. You’ll definitely find yourself staring at panels because of how refined and beautiful his art style gets. A lot of these drawings are utterly ridiculous
I'm excited to see the improvement!
@@GavinReadsItAllthere’s already improvement you see from chapter one to A0-P0 it’s honestly pretty amazing
Ay glad you’re gonna be re-reading along with me, it’s gonna be a fun time
I can't wait until you get to the Golden Age Arc.
A chapter by chapter based reaction/review is hype for a lot of stories... berserk tho? I am scared. For me, for you, for everyone.
Haha uh oh I am very scared
@@GavinReadsItAll this will not age well...
Ahh I just knew!
Berserk really does throw you into the deep end so just vibing and observing for now is probably a good way to approach it
I’m so glad it’s not just me
I thought I was starting in the wrong place initially 💀 had to look it up to make sure a volume 0 didn't come first
@@GavinReadsItAll yeah the series starts in media res, so it is kind of confusing at first. Just power through.
"once you started reading Berserk, you've chosen the path of a struggler"
this is my #1 favorite manga period
also YES! Berserk inspired Dark Souls
I hope you still will read it traditionally that way you will get the correct picture.
@@eerohillo3832 I might, one day.
Ay I'm glad I could give you motivation to start Berserk, that makes me happy that you think it's great!
Welcome to the Insanity that is BERSERK!
I hope you enjoy the series, and continue reading it! It is truly a magnificent series, and I look forward to your review of the next arc, 'The Golden Age Arc"
I am so excited for the golden age arc!
I second this...Junji Ito is incredible, for sure!
@@GavinReadsItAll Oh when it comes to Junji Ito there's a lot to choose from in both long form and short form stories.😊❤📚
@@GavinReadsItAll my favorite junji ito story is the enigma of amigara fault. I would recommend to start with that one!
Berserk has some of the best character writing i have ever seen
I absolutely love your videos btw! They are very comforting
If you're interested, some chapters that serve as good stopping points in the Golden age arc are:
The Golden Age, part 8
Ch 6 Mastster of the sword, part 1
Ch 22 Campfire of Dreams
Ch 36 The Morning Departure part 3
Ch 69 The Immortal Once Again
And then the arc ends on chapter 94.
P.S. the Baron was the snake demon Guts killed at the end of the first chapter.
It definitely finds it stride post blackswordsman arc. U need to keep going with it. Vinland saga is another incredible mature manga series about vikings that u need to check out.
Is Vinland Saga ending next year? I think it would be the perfect time to start reading it later this year, I love the look of that one!
I just found out your channel literally yesterday because of one piece and now berserk? That's top 1 & 2 on my manga list, Instant sub!
Ayyy I just knew they were your favourites
The art becomes otherworldly at times, Kentaro spent days on some panels. Im so in love with berserk.
The story slows right down and takes it person by person, it's a pretty wild start throwing you into the middle of everything
Love all your videos. Im already craving more Berserk videos but take your time and enjoy the journey. Much love ❤️.
Please continue this!
Heya Gavin, the snakeman in the first chapter was the "Baron" I think you missed his transformation.
I think the motivation for killing him was that he was a priest for the god hand and that guts seacrately sympathised with the people in the
carrige that the baron was eating. (Im reading throgh the golden age arc)
Ohhhhhh!!!! That makes so much sense!! Wow can’t believe I missed that
buying all at once is smart this series only really gets better as it goes, both miura's art and story mature and grow its amazing.
Stoked to see more of your content. The Berserk manga is in my opinion the best work of fiction ever written and it's one of my favorite things in the world to watch people experience it from the same time
love that you started berserk! i started 6 months ago and just caught up and it was an absolute journey! i wish i started sooner. good luck!
Thank you!! Also loved your video with Amber Alise, watched a good chunk of it a few days ago (didn’t want to watch too much in case of One Piece spoilers for arcs I haven’t read yet), but will watch the rest when I catch up, it was an awesome video!
@@GavinReadsItAll thank you so much !! I really appreciate it!!

More Berserk videos please 🙏 😃
Long weekend and time to catch up on housework while finally getting to dive into Beserk with you 🧡
So far you have me sold on this seinen series.
Now I need you to read Dorohedoro and I can be happy
YEEEEESSSSSS, OP and Berserk my 2 favorite manga. berserk being my first tattoo, not sure what motive i get for OP.
respect+
- guts has enough trauma for all of us
- alot of ppl recomment reading the black swordsman arc after the golden age arc, but with the black swordsman arc you get queues to what you have to look out for in the next one, also you always have a certain feeling of pure dread above your head, while reading the next arc, which is most likely intended by miura
- the snake monster is the baron who eats the ears jfyi
- lots of ppl also say that berserk is glorifying violence etc. but i very much believe that its all intentional to show how truly horrifying this world they are living in is
- at this point you are confused on whats going on, because guts also doesnt really know himself whats going on, and i also think that many ppl dont have names, because guts doesnt want to know their names, to not get attached to them
-sadly there is no anime adaptation that does it justice, but after you read the golden age arc, you can watch the 1997 anime, which is imo the best we got so far as anime adaptations
-after the golden age arc LOTS of questions will be answered, there will be new questions, but its worth it :P
- A TON of franchise (soulsborne included) are inspired or influenced by berserk, its insane how many actually
Next arc part 1/2
- i just checked and personally, if you want to cut it into 2 parts id recommend reading up to chapter 48 (including that) its the end of "Sparks from a sword tip", which should be according to the wiki be included in manga volume 10 (not sure if you can see that in the deluxe versions)
its also almost perfectly in the middle, since the golden age arc goes until chapter 94, well part 2 would be sliightly longer, but its a big turning point in that arc
soo, my comment got longer then intended, i just went with it, as your video went, just like you got with the chapters lol. im super hyped, none of my friends read stuff like that, sooo i need an outlet lol
Ah thanks so much for all the info and helping me understand this arc better, and for the Golden Age arc split too, really appreciate that 😊
@@GavinReadsItAll now that i think about it, 2 parts might still be hella long. You just did like 40minutes for what, 8 chapter?
So 40 chapter in part 1 for golden age could turn out quite long...
Looking forward to the future 2 hour videos. There's never too much berserk.
I watched the intro and can't wait to watch your opinions, but there are also some little ears awake so I'll continue after my son is asleep. 😝
Haha good shout Judith!
Love the long videos can't wait for more berserk 👌🏽
Awesome! Cant wait to see you enjoy berserk, im sure youll get it more from the first golden age chapter (: just found you today and already waiting for more videos on berserk
ahh always so fun watching your manga videos
I'm glad you like the format!
And if you like found family-ish trope, I've got good news for you
Ok, finished the video and I'm relieved to see you quite enjoyed it till the end😊 super glad
I am also reading berserk for the first time right now and omg I am so excited to hear your thoughts about so many things!!!
I hope you're following it a little easier than I am haha some things went right over my head!
Berserk review let’s goooooo! It and one piece are tied for my favorite! I can’t wait to see your journey through this bleak world!
Ayyy 🙌🏼
37:34 that panel with teary-eyed Guts is gut-wrenching (pun intended). You can tell that he is acting tough but he is devastated inside.
One Piece and now Berserk?! My life is now complete lol
fax
Hopefully you haven't spoken too soon haha
There will be a clear midpoint/interlude (around the middle) in the Golden Age arc. It’s kind of hard to tell a specific chapter since they changed publishers so like online chapter 1 is like a bit into the golden age arc. Don’t worry, it will be clear. Otherwise, will be especially looking forward to your next review of Berserk :)
I hope he keeps reading because this video didn’t get quite as many views compared to his other video shows
I read the first two arcs and a bit of the third a few years ago and loved it, lowkey became one of my favorite manga, but had to stop for various reasons.
I’ve got a job on my hands it seems 😂
Looking forward to follow your Berserk journey =)
Oh wow even the author regretted something he wrote? You’ll have to let me know what it is when I read that part
@@GavinReadsItAll yeah miura had a couple regrets in berserk, namely the amount of assault early on, but like i said it does get MAJORLY toned down in later stuff.
Wylde is near the end of golden age so you have time before you get to it, there is also a chapter Miura Omake’d (which is like a .5 chapter that isn’t necessarily canon) because he thought he revealed too much, but honestly its an amazing chapter which I would still recommend reading (but with a grain of salt)
Chapters 58-64, and 70-95-ish are where it’s the worse so I recommend steeling yourself for those, otherwise good luck !!!
Minor edit: The chapter that was omake’d is technically 82-83 you’d have to read it online or in an older single volume!
Ahhh so excited! I just read this a few days ago so I would be able to watch this when it came out ❤
Ah yay thank you for doing your homework for this video haha hope you enjoy ❤
Gav, please don’t think you’re over your head with Berserk! It will all become clear, I promise! There’s definitely some light in this manga but….it also gets way darker… it’s worth it tho.
Gonna stick with it til the end 💪🏼
Oh that’s interesting, Miura really believed and loved his story didn’t he? I already admire him so much for sticking with his dream.
I’m ready for this masterpiece
It's an incredible series, which I'm still in the process of reading (I'm up to DE 12 now.)
Berserk is utterly incredible, a masterpiece, but be prepared...it IS grim and dark as hell....you will cry, rage and upset, but there is also the balance with much sweetness, laughter, utterly charming moments, proud moments...aghhhh!
One Piece and Berserk are my favorite mangas. Very different but both are incredible.
What's better than Gavin reading One Piece, my all time favorite manga? Gavin also reading Berserk, my second all time favorite manga.
Alot of other media is inspired by Berserk, not only Dark Souls. But yes, you are right when you see the connection.
the whiplash i'm feeling going from enies lobby straight to berserk LOL it's like eating the best meal of your life and then instantly starving. (i adore both series, very excited for you)
Love the way you described that 😂
Omg you started Berserk! You've given me motivation to continue the series😁
Do ittttt
Yeeeeees Berserk !!!! My favorite manga of all times !!!
I can already see why!
Golden age is a beast of an arc, but if you want to do it in two videos, the best stopping point would be finishing volume 8
Can’t wait for the next one, has there been any delay? Totally understand if there has but just curious if we’ll be seeing part 2 soon?
Definitely this month! I was gonna start golden age in February but didn’t realise how epic and dense it is, and I had so much going on, I thought it best to give it time and attention in a less busier month, so should be later this month, but thanks for watching, I appreciate it!
i am really excited for this berserk is the most critically aclaimed manga(even more so than one piece) i like to see your take on it
I read and became a fan of berserk before being a fan of one piece, berserk come to my life when i was a bit tired of happy endings and of heroism and levity...
Yesss Berserk readalong!!
Berserk is one of the Dark Souls' inspiration sources.
Also, my arm's getting tired seeing you holding that chonk of a book for an hour.😆
Haha it's great arm exercise for me since reading and holding heavy books is the only form of exercise I get these days

He hates himself for not being strong enough to protect others, he hates always dragging everyone in misery that surrounds him, so he creates walls like why should I care? or its their own fault for being weak, otherwise he would just not be able to go on
Berserk 1997 anime is a good watch after you have read golden age saga
Even muira said heis black swordsman arc has , eem.
It gets good upon seeing his past. Also belive it ot not, berserk gets really wholesome too.
BTW dar souls and demon sould are inspired by berserk in big parts.
By the way check out the webtoon kubera , that has fantranslation on mangadex that are better. And its, it really doing things to my emotion, i mean its mystery too so, stuff and world i build, but yeah , so much emotions, and she somehow continues being fun but also, making me really sad and worried. In the bet way possible.
cannot wait for the berserk golden age arc review :))))))))))))
I've heard the best things about the arc, and I have no idea what it's about haha
I just saw your Ennies Lobby reaction. And then i saw this and the first thing i said was “OH GOD😅😅. He wasn’t ready for the Merry. He’s not ready for this.”
If only I did the manga tournament a month later, I definitely would have went with a much lighter manga 😂
first I'm glad you are reading berserk like many other also sait it is for me my favorite Manga with One Piece it's really amazing in art and also has a good created world. I just can't recoment it to everyone since it is really heavy stuff that not everyone can handle but you'll see (and saw that) yourself
about the Anime it does pretty much skip the black swordsman arc (only the first episode covers a litle bit of the baron part)
in general the Anime is the 2nd Arc and you shouldn't watch it befor reading it since the manga does a better job in telling the story. but it's definitely worth a watch after reading it
then there are new adaptions first the 3 movies wich are fine but also just cover the golden age arc and like 30 min extra ath the end of the 3rd movie not as good to watch as the old Anime but kinda fine and it doesn't take as much time as the old anime
And last and also least the 2016/17 anime adaptions just don't watch them they are horrible in every way.
And thank u Gavin for your wonderful videos and for crying over a ship.
P.s nothing happens in Thriller Bark.
Don't know if you noticed but Femto is Griffith. Not the baron. Everyone calls him Femto except Guts, he's the only one to call him Griffith. Anyways, glad you're enjoying reading the series. I would say just read each deluxe volume and make video for each one, that's how I would do it.
Guts has one of the most wholesome backstories ever.
>:)
I get very confused when I read. I have a hard time grasping the plot as quickly and when it's a setting, woo boy. Idk if it's because I lose focus or if it's my 0% spatial intelligence, but as long as we are together in this we will thrive.
“In one piece there is normally a panel with full name and occupation” cracked me up so much 😂😂😂
I recommend not looking up anything you didn't understand. Most of your questions do get answered over time and you're liable to get spoiled if you go searching for answers
Good shout, I’ll stay away from looking things up
Where’s the next installation of this series!?
the spoil for this story is not too problematic ( if you are somewhat experienced in story telling) you can see thing coming.
Berserk is a good one to read along side one piece they are both masterworks with very different themes
