I probably could name 10 where the best western of that year was FAR superior to whatever film won best picture Oscar Starting in 1939 with Stagecoach to 1967 with El Dorado.
@@bravehome4276 I think it is vastly overrated. And Ford is a way better director than Fleming who I guess you could say was efficient. but hardly one of the greats. In fact, there are quite a few films from 39 that are superior to Wind. Like Love Affair, Mt. Smith Goes to Washington, Only Angels Have Wings and Ninotchka.
Films I agree should at least have been nominated: 1. My Darling Clementine (1947) A tough year, but better than Crossfire at the least. My personal choice -- Great Expectations. Winner -- Gentlemen's Agreement 2. Red River (1948) 5 outstanding films were nominated. Winner -- Hamlet (OK with this one, it's a toss-up really) 3. The Searchers (1956). Surely one of the worst oversights. Should have replaced at least The King and I or the winner Around the World in 80 days. My favorite -- Friendly Persuasion. 4. Rio Brave (1959) Another great year for film. While I love Rio Bravo, can't see it replacing the 5 nominees. The winner, Ben-Hur, one of my all-time favorites. 5. The Wild Bunch (1969) I can see why this didn't make it in as a nominee -- too intensely violent for Hollywood of that year. Winner -- Midnight Cowboy. My choice -- Butch Cassidy etc.
Are all you people crazy? The Big Country is one of the greatest Western Films of all time and should have won Best Picture of 1958, it's much better than Gigi! Nobody mentions this epic film that had everything including legendary Burl Ives who stole the film and received Best Supporting Actor ! There's something wrong here, it never gets any credit Are you kidding me!!!!!

Well, much as I love Stagecoach, I'd have to agree with the Academy on this one -- Gone with the Wind was truly epic.

You got the year wrong for The Wild Bunch ----it came out in 1969
The Searchers should have been best picture and John Wayne the best actor.
