On the topic of voice actors, Switch owners might be interested to know nearly all of the 13 main characters (as well as some side characters) are also heard in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Very eclectic cast!

Comparing this game to persona is honestly a disservice. I don’t disagree that it’s a masterpiece, but besides the game centering around high schoolers, it shares absolutely nothing in common. Glad this game is getting the attention it deserves, though

Let me tell anyone reading this. The games story is incredible and will surprise you left and right and it is a must play highly recommended. The combat is strategy and is fun but you can make it as easy as you want to focus on story if you want and it doesn’t take up a ton of time on that side of the game. The game is around 30 hrs to complete so not terribly long. The art is also beautiful.

@@SmileGentLee it's kind of divided into two separate games in it's presentation.
You can play the visual novel sections as much as you want up to certain points where you need to play the RTS sections to advance the story. There are a lot of RTS level's that you need to complete by the end of the game, but you'll be playing the visual novel a lot more often than not.
The RTS sections were enjoyable tbh, but they're the appetizer to the main course, which is the visual novel.

Vanillaware is the best dev ever. when I saw the combat of this game it blew my mind because it looked inspired by the gamplay of an old PS1 game called Gunparade March. Then I read in an interview that indeed the devs got inspired by that game.

i literally just finished the game and it is one of my favorite gaming experiences ive had in recent memory. I was so disappointed to see that it came out in 2019 because i had never even heard of it until about a month or so ago and still never hear anyone talk about it. While it completely works as a standalone game, it is set up so perfectly for a franchise and i think the devs at Vanillaware would be doing a disservice to the universe they created by not expounding on the ideas they introduced or expanding this world they crafted (however i would personally love to see them try branching out into different genres if they ever do new entries). It was such a unique experience to me and i really hope to see more from Vanillaware. Easy 10/10

I also love the fact George Kamitani had low expections that this game will sell well due to the dev hell the game went through until Yoko Taro stepped in and just told him to have confidence in the product PS: He played the game in its entirety and boom the reviews came in generally positive sure low sales are still an issue but its a good game like most vanillaware games are... well Grim Grimoire remaster might put some thing or two from 13 Sentinel's RTS system like how Odin Sphere Liftrasir was post Muramasa

I know I'm late to the party, but I just finished this last night. I really enjoyed all aspects of the game from the "adventure" mode to the "battle" mode. It tells an intricate, interwoven story without ever making you feel like you missed something; and if you did, the "analysis" mode let you fill in the blanks (if you've uncovered the files, that is). The visual novel style segments were a slow burn for me. I don't typically play that style of game, so the lack of activate participation (i.e. no combat, collecting items, etc.) made me antsy. The strategy sections were kind of neat though, and like you said, make for a good break from the visual novel sections. Overall I'm glad I played it, it told an interesting story with lots of nods to sci-fi tropes many of us grew up with. Add in some good ol' kaiju and you have a good time!

Why this thumbnail even mentioned _Persona_ to begin with is beyond me. There nothing about this game that resembles _Persona_ whatsoever. Hell, this game isn’t even developed by Atlus (only published).
It’s ironic because Nintendo Life was one of the few publications that actually didn’t compare _Shin Megami Tensei V_ to _Persona_ in their review (when numerous other review sites like IGN made the lazy comparison), so it feels weird for them to reference _Persona_ now in the thumbnail even though the review itself doesn’t make that direct comparison.

Played it on PS4. I expected to find a game I could be a hipster champion for but in the end I only enjoyed it partially. The story is the main draw of course, but my criticism is the frequency of the twists. You get served with a WTF moment every 15 minutes or so, and at some point I just gave up trying to make sense of it all before the very end of the game because I knew my assumptions would be up-ended in the next two story sequences. But it IS a remarkable achievement that they actually put a story like this together in the first place and I will always support unusual concepts like 13 Sentinels. There's no other game like this. It's also the most Switch-y game that wasn't on the Switch since Persona 5, so it's great that it's now on Switch. One can hope for P5 to follow suit one day.

I remember that a guy told me about the anime cliché, that a girl is late and runs to school with toast in her mouth. That was years ago.
I can't believe they used exactly this clichè so boldly here xD

Why did it feel like Zion was severely reaching for things to talk about in the latter part of this video? Instead of giving reasons why a 60 USD price tag for a Nintendo Switch price tag is worth paying for, he instead rambled on... and on... and on... about seemingly nothing for the majority of his runtime instead of keying in on points missed by the original reviewer (and review article), like... overall gameplay length, replayability, multiple endings to give the "score system" meaning, does battle loss contribute to the story narrative or difficulty, you know, things that matter besides talking about CDs, or his back catalog of games he never finished? Or did that last part basically disqualify him from giving any actual input on the game because he didn't actually play this game and only (maybe?) played the PS4 version? I mean, it'd be nice to have information about whether or not a game is worth buying by reviewers that tell us information about if this version (the Switch version) is worth buying... right?

but yeah, it's kinda weird that Zion kept rambeling on about stuff unrelated to the game itself...

The gameplay isn't amazing, but I bet it would be more fun than expected. That's how it was for me. I had low expectations but found it enjoyable.
I would get tired of the stort section and want to take a break by doing some combat. Then I'd get tired of the combat and get excited for the story. For me, it was nice jumping back and forth.
I'd bite the bullet if I were you, though I am admittedly quite biased.

  • @vailathi

When Vanillaware originally released this, I slept on it. I thought the combat sections weren't Vanillaware, and the visual novel style was a step back from what they usually do. I got it for PS4 almost a year later and played it right after I played Persona 5 Royal. I see people saying it's not Persona, and they're right, its not. Buuuut, it does share similarities in its plot twist style story, a school backdrop, a lot of the same voice actors (like practically all of them), and I wouldn't say they have a similar visual style but I do think Vanillaware honed in on making this game feel like it has its own visual identity, something P5 also succeeded at. Coming off of 180 hrs of P5R, I couldn't have found a better choice, and I'm glad I played it when I did because I think it's an amazing game, definitely a masterpiece. Things don't always have to be the same to be compared to other things, sometimes people can compare qualities of things or direction and ideas or even minor details, rather than blatantly obvious things. I think P5 and 13 Sentinels do share many qualities and directions.

im about 4x hours in and yet to see why the hype is so high for this game. There isnt (so far) much 'game' for me, just a kind of fairly interesting visual novel / anime with very little in the way of meaningful choices and the tower defence bits are very easy and not really challenging in any way. I really wanted to like this and was carried away by the hype. The story is good but i dont feel like im playing a game but just on rails . Im hoping that i get to have a bit more agency moving forwards as im currently feeling like im just watching a never ending cut-scene. The narrative sections/puzzles (?) don't require any kind of critical thinking or puzzling , its all there in front of you, thus , as ive said, an on-rails experience. im hoping it gets more interesting moving forwards but i feel like im playing a game that is way below my abilities/intelligence which is a shame. that all said, it is pretty and also, liker ive said, not a bad story, but i feel like im looking at a flick book rather than playing a game. im really hoping i get to actually play something moving forwards rather than just watch a bunch of cut scenes. NB- i will update this comment if i play more and change my mind.

In my opinion, this game's main draw isn't necessarily about having active gameplay and the gameplay that it does have isn't really the main strength. In a way, you are right that it does seem like you're reading through a book or going through a visual novel rather than play a game. The puzzles/choices that are in the story sections don't really require any sort of critical thinking, as you mentioned. If you're looking for more of an active gameplay from this game, you won't get it with this game.
With this game, you have to look at it from a different angle to get more of an appreciation for it. No, it doesn't really have much of a gameplay or have puzzles that you actively try to solve with critical thinking. Where the real puzzle lies is in the overall story and you solve that outside of the game itself. Basically, all the character story bits are clues that you gather in order to piece together what's going on. How you interpret the information that you learn will dictate your comprehension of the events and how you think they tie to each other. Basically, the puzzle is your own understanding of the story. Now, this does require that you are at least somewhat invested to know what's going on in the story and I think this is where some might turn the other way if they are not.
If you do decide to play more of it, I hope you find it more enjoyable but there's not shame if it isn't for you!
