I love that ending. Your character standing on the wall of his castle, just flipping off everybody. Maybe there is a sequel where he starts by flipping everyone off.
There were a couple of times when I got pretty grumpy playing through, but I'm proud that I pushed through to the end. I don't think I have it in me to smash a game even if it was a hunk of junk (which this game totally isn't... it's just a hunk of trouble)
Just killing for killing sake because they will eat your soul if you let them, but uh can't rob them of their shine belt or demon wings, someone would buy demon wings,. Those enemies have swords, those fish are huge, demon fangs, claws, that giant mace and armored knight, catch a live lizard man and haul him back to town, scorpion glands are likely psychedelic,Lamias likely got a great voice maybe get her to sing at karaoke, free horse, free lance, free sheild, I'd be stealing all the road signs because the townfolk are terrible, you think I don't need directions, then you can have any, I'd sleep out side of town in spite of those fools. Yeah it's 1000s equipment slots but you gotta make multiple trips because the game is so confusing and jerkish. "Enhgh shop keep, here is a bag of 40 hearts, I want 900 money now, not soons.I'm keeping this boomerang sword because I am the lord of the sword" At least the start screen is pretty and orange sepia vapourwave, Hungy got to see that a bunch so that's nice.
I loved this game. I probably got the game in 2nd grade and always got stuck at Paradin. Then one summer in high school I decided to dust off the Master System and give it another try and finally beat it.
This is another nostalgia driven title I use to play with my friend who had a SMS back in the day. We tried to beat it many times whenever there wasn’t something else to play. Years later I did manage to find a stack of games for cheap at the time and this was one that brought the nostalgia back! Including all the cursing from it’s difficulty 🤬 Unfortunately I lost my original collection so it might be a while until I can try this again, but when I do that music will bring me back to those early years of gaming 😊
Oh wow! I found this game really tough even as an adult so I can't imagine how it would've been back then for you two! I hope you do get a chance to experience it again someday. It's definitely something beatable with a little practice.
It really would be impossible to find your way without the internet. Very obnoxious game. However, if you have a guide and look uo the route from time to time then this game becomes a certified banger.
It’s amazing to me the perspective here. How my “goggles” make me look back so fondly on this game when it’s really a fossilized brontosaurus turd. But I can’t help it, I love it. Lol again, such a great review. Thanks for this.
It's not as turdly as you're thinking! I stuck it out because I wanted to see the good in it, and there's definitely a lot of good along with some of the challenge and what might feel like unfairness. I wouldn't call it anything close to a favourite, but it's definitely far from what I'd consider to be a bad game.
You're very welcome! If I'm being totally honest, I don't think I ever paused the game. I just drew my own map and used the one in the manual for the most part! I've heard the whole soundtrack though... much of it is great!
@AussieSingo I don't remember the pause music but I did try pausing in each town and a generic map would pop up with no indication of where you were and what I was looking at. In other words, completely useless.
It’s great to see this game get some love. I loved this like I love all Master System games. “Are there no brave men left in our land?” So frickin great. Great job on this!
Seeing this game, I get major Zelda II vibes from it, from the towns to the structure to the a-frame-or-two-more-than-usual animation on the main character. I'm sure Castlevania II must have been an influence as well. Zelda II was a January '87 release in Japan, Castlevania II was August '87. Lord of the Sword hit in June '88, so it's pretty reasonable to think it was an attempt by Sega to have their own similar game out on the market at the time. Unfortunately, it seems like it was handed to a team who didn't have a good handle on how to do that. Given that June 1988 was also right when they first publicly announced the Mega Drive in Japan, and a few months later released the final domestic Mark III/Master System games, it's not unreasonable to think its development time may also have been cut short if management wanted to move the devs over to working on the new system. Given the flaws & bugs you noted here, it definitely seems rushed and insufficiently tested.
Yeah, definitely not a super polished game but still a good challenge if you're into that sort of thing. I love side-scrolling action games and while it didn't blow my mind, it definitely scratched that itch for me.
Finished this game as a kid somehow, I was so proud of myself lol. I also beat Kenseiden around the same time. Today every time I try to play these games on an emulator I'm like how the fucking hell did I ever beat these games????
@@hungrygoriya I think it's just that back in the day we only had a few games and played them to death. All us old heads probably just burnt out playing our few games to death and don't have the attention span anymore, lol. So glad there's a new generation that can make vids like this.
@@KingofCrusherthat’s because we spent out hard earned money on these games. We appreciated most our games back in the 80’s. Today’s technology they can play games for free. Todays kids mine as well will never understand just where we came from lol
Ahh Lord of the Sword a game that I got nearly a decade ago and has sat quietly on the shelf ever since being playtested. I just remember the controls being so different than anything else I had played so I was immediately turned off. After watching you play through it on stream I think it is time to finally give it a second chance. Not sure I can get through all of the tedium of having to criss-cross the map and kill the same enemies over and over but I guess it's worth a shot! Knowing what to expect and what not to do should definitely help :) Review Highlights: -It is always nice to see you referencing the manual and then showing how said things in the manual play out in actual gameplay -I liked how you showed off the power differences in the two swords side-by-side -I was happy the wiener kick guy made a cameo. That animation cracked me up xD -I'm glad to see you highlight the "victory lap" as a major negative in the game but now I am curious what would actually happen if you had lost all of your lives after defeating the final boss. I assume you would just game over but who knows?! -I can't believe you defiled that poor nice old wizards face but I like your style! Are you accepting art commisions? All in all, I think you did a wonderful job. "Congratulation" on another well-done video and I look forward to the next! PS: It's pronounced "Dwar-lay" ;-)
I can't wait to see you struggle through... ahem, I mean, play through the game on stream! It'll be a delight to see someone else try to tackle this one. And thanks for all the kind words. I'm glad you felt the review reflected your own thoughts too, and included things you thought were important. I could do art commissions where I add pre-rendered shapes onto screenshots of games... I will charge $092834098234 for each of them!
You puss. I got the game in the mail and beat it same day. Pluck that lord of sword cart off the shelf and play it. If you refuse then you best stuff that gamr case into a cupboard somewhere out of sight. You shouldn't display a game you don't have the guts to play.
"Blatantly lied to" was my favorite part :-D. Thank you again for the awesome review fair Lady of the Sword. I am proud to dwell in the court of your Kingdom!
It's really not a good feeling when people lie to you in games, never mind blatantly! I'm glad you have you along in the Kingdom court as well :) Thanks for watching!
I very much enjoy your videos. You cover games I've never heard of from back when I was growing up. You have a very pleasant way of talking and describing the games. I got a hearty chuckle from the very sad man. I also like how you show stuff from the manuals, as I used to love to read them when I was a kid and I definitely miss them. I get a big kick out of when you show your notes and maps as that is also extremely nostalgic. I hope your videos become more popular, as I find the more mainstream reviews of retro games to be done in a very over produced and irritating kind of way. They force so much freaking enthusiasm. Like you're gonna lose interest or something. ANYWAYS GREAT STUFF YOU GOT HERE
You're too kind! Thanks very much :) I enjoyed manuals a ton as well and used to read The Legend of Zelda's and Faxanadu's all the time... I don't really ever start a game I'm going to stick with unless I've read up on how things work for my own sake of not feeling like an idiot! And I also have a memory like a sieve these days so notes are essential! I hope people keep stopping by too. The well-wishes are appreciated!
I rented this game a couple of times as a kid in the early-mid 90's. I was always really into RPG's, so was so excited seeing that 'label' in the top corner of the box at the video store. And like you, I fired it up to much disappointment. A dull, clunky action game with mild RPG elements which were mostly aesthetics. And over time I'd think 'im gonna give it another go!' only to lead to the same disappointment. It's one of those things that I am planning on going back to soon, as an adult, for some closure. I did the same for YS (which I didn't like as a kid) and I beat it and absolutely loved it. I'll just know to keep my expectations low 😊 Thanks for another great trip down memory lane with these Master System reviews! ✨
I'm glad I wasn't alone in my feelings on this game, though it would be good to commiserate around a really positive and enjoyable experience instead, haha. I do enjoy weird titles and this definitely scratched that itch for me. Good luck on your return to Lord of the Sword, and thanks for checking out the channel!
I am constantly amazed that you draw so many maps for your games. I did that Once in my life. For Dungeons and Dragons: Pool of Radiance. I decided it wasn't worth it to me. I would however love to see more pictures of the maps you have drawn. Lots of side by side the games maps next to yours. Hey, just because I don't like drawing them doesn't mean I don't like seeing them.
I always keep a notepad nearby when I'm playing games. It helps so much to jot things down or even make a crude map even if it's not pretty. I do try to show them in my videos if I make them for a game but the last few I've played haven't had a grid pattern to bust out the old graph paper! I'm sure I have a few back in my Twitter feed if you dig deep enough!
I always look forward to your new videos, I've discovered so many Master System games xD This one almost seems a little mean, at times. Though I do always love when a retro game gives me one, singular congratulation xD
I was enthralled by this as a kid, but never got to play it a lot since I had borrowed it from a friend for a few days a few times. I haven't taken the time to complete it as an adult, but I'm happy to have it in my collection. Great review!
@@AussieSingo I actually dove into Ultima IV about 2 years ago now... I loved the Master System version! It was my first time playing anything from the series and the game really resonated with me. I'm hoping to play the 5th game in the coming months too.
@@hungrygoriya yes that review was what made me find and subscribe tonyou about 2 months ago. It was a great review. I thought it was an amazing game too. What system are you doing 5 on?
@@AussieSingo It's looking like the GOG PC version, but I'd love to hunt down the NES game. I don't know how faithful it is to the computer version but it's been one I've been hunting for for a long time. Any recommendations?
Hey Goriyagirl I am a new scriber and really enjoy your perspective on great classic games. I was just watching this episode and thinking,Lord of the Sword is like the Dark Souls of the 80$
good & honest review of this one. I had this recommended by several people, but did find it lacking in many ways, which you very eloquently describe here. I agree its still worth a playthrough, but not worth returning to afterwards.
There's very little replay value in this one once you know where to go. I'd come back to it after a long while when I'd had a chance to forget some of the finer details, but there are way more interesting things to play out there. Thanks so much :)
New Hungry Goriya! You keep digging up these gems from the Master System. I need to start looking at the catalog more. I know you're putting this game down, but it still looks cool. The programmers should have put more time into this before release. A few minor upgrades to the gameplay would have made this a must play. Another excellent video! The final send off with the middle finger was perfect.
Thank you :) I bought 11 action adventure/RPGs in a lot a few years ago and have been working my way through them slowly to savour the experience. If you do dive in, I hope you find some great stuff because I've been consistently charmed and amazed with much of what I've played through so far. And I completely agree with you. This game is really rough around the edges in some parts and with a little refining, it would've easily been one of my favourites up there with things like Faxanadu. It's too bad that it didn't quite make it to that level, but it was still fun to learn and finish. That middle finger felt more like a proper backhander after crawling to the end though :D
I bought this game as a loose cart from a pawn shop in 2004 purely based on the name. Was looking for a good RPG! Never really got into it cause I was mainly playing mega drive games. Thanks for the review.
@@hungrygoriya i dont think ill ever play it to completion, got too many other games on my list first. but ill definitely play it for a bit for nostalgic reasons.
This game was something else. I dedicated a full day with checking on a faqs and still needed to replay it 4 times to beat it. The 3rd time attempt was especially painful since I got to the last boss and died for the 8th time. Well it turns out you can't continue 10 times, you can only continue 7 times. The manual actually lies. I had to start from scratch. Even when you kind of know where you are going, this game still takes 3 hours to play through. It's an absolute grind. I stuck with it and felt absolutely elated when I managed to complete the game. Although one other gripe I have with the game is that medusa is absolutely bugged. I couldn't complete the 3rd objective of beating her since my game was bugged on all 4 playthroughs when attempting to fight her. Luckily, fighting her was optional, and you can beat the game by skipping her even though it is stated in game to be 1 of 3 major objectives. This game is an absolute beast, I challenge any of you nerds to beat this game. I will be shocked if any of you have the guts to take it on (on original hardware, no savestates).
My experience with this game was... weird to put it mildly. My dad bought it when I was like 7 or 8, (we are from Spain and we didn't speak a word in English back then). I was used to linear games, so this was a first for me. I somehow kinda enjoyed it and managed to get to the mountain monster somehow, by exploring and trial and error (since I didn't understand one word the villagers said). Was never able to discover the dungeons until the internet became a thing and found a guide that helped me finish it, so many years later. And the funnniest thing is, now that I also speak English, I'm not sure if understanding the villagers would have helped, because of how vague their dialogue often is. But anyhow, I still like this game and holds a special place in my collection
I'm so glad that you eventually got to finish this game. Thanks for sharing your experience with it. Over the years, I've spoken to quite a few people that didn't speak English when they got into video games that required it. It's cool that you stuck it out and pushed forward and got somewhere purely by brute force exploration.
I probably would've passed on this game had I seen gameplay of it, but you're convinced me to give it a whirl for that fateful day when I pick up a SMS :)
Honestly, it's not too bad once you know what you're doing. Once you know who is lying to you and such... and I'd obviously do my best to help! I can't wait for the day you break into this system.
Yeah! The story is good and they followed it relatively well, but it took a lot of thinking after finishing it to find out how I actually fulfilled the other two tasks on the list... it didn't come together in the moment because it was just about as clear as mud!
@@hungrygoriya no lol. I was confused bc you have to talk to the elder a couple of times to move forward. I defeated the first boss but then was just lost and got bored fast. Govellius was great though.
Great review. I take it that #soMuchSoSoons is an accurate description for the game? The premise & visuals are definitely promising, though the execution is where the game seems to stumble. Also, is that the Golden Axe Warrior over world theme? :D
Haha that's a great hashtag to start pushing around the internet! And I agree with you... the game had a ton of promise but fell short in a couple of really important areas for me. I borrowed lots of music for this since there wasn't too much in this game. There's some Bill & Ted, Golden Axe Warrior, Ys, Faxanadu...
They say the men with the pen is mightier than the Lord of the Sword. I'm partial to the nuns with the guns, myself. On a more serious note, it looked like your assessment of the game was mixed to not great. I'm curious about what motivates you to still complete a not-so-great game? At least the music sounds pretty good. I've never played this but the music sounds a bit familiar.
Nuns with guns! What a sight! Yeah, it was definitely on the meh side of things for me. A great motivator was that when I looked around online for information about this game, so many people didn't make it to the end or wrote it off as bad because they couldn't quite get there. I like to have the full picture before I review anything, so it was a must to get through this. It's also easy when I stream these things too because I'm not just sighing away in my house by myself feeling frustrated. There's a real sense of accountability when you have an audience!
This game just shows that Trollface was born in 1988, with TWO BIG TROLLS (the sword that is actually weaker and the ending not being right after the final boss) I did play the game when I was a child but I only managed to beat it at around 2015, with a walkthrough.
People who played this back in the day were trained to expect the worst and hope for the best in every game that followed, haha... I've never seen any other game give you a weaker weapon like this!
When this game came out I bought it and was 1 of few I bought that I regretted buying. I did finish the game. I do have the game may give it another go and see what I think today.
I hope you have fun with it despite having negative feelings back then... it's worth playing for sure, just a little mean sometimes. It was a good feeling finishing this one for me.
Judging from this and some of your other videos, you sure do have a way of encountering more than your fair share of glitches! (9:40) It's amusing and I don't disapprove. :-) Thanks for showing us what this game is like.
I seem to be a magnet for that kind of thing, and at least in this case it was helpful instead of being stuck in a wall or something stupid like that :D Thanks for checking this out!
It does look like quite an interesting game to be fair. A little on the slow side, but sounds kind of interesting. The constant killing monsters between towns remonds me of the Shantae games. (I did find that anoying too!) Thanks for the informative review.
Totally... it has a good set of bones. I think with a little more rounding out in some areas it could've been a favourite of mine but it's definitely fun to play and still very interesting as you mentioned. I haven't played any of the Shantae games yet, but I have a few re-releases on the Switch. Hopefully I'll play them sooner than later.
While I kinda dig this background, this game looks like such a slog. Kinda sad because this game kind of looks like a unique experience. With how much is stacked against you, it's hard to want to even try. I've seen this game a few times and thought about getting it. Maybe for super cheap one day haha!
It is quite a slog indeed! If you do get it, just prepare yourself to practice a lot. Every enemy is manageable, you just need to know the patterns. And up to jump is a bit nightmarish, but it's not bad having a weapon for each of your two buttons as well. I hope you'll give it a try sometime.
I feel like they at least tried when making this game. I really disliked it the first time I played it, but maybe I judged too harshly. I think the fact I only have a Sega control stick makes the combat just that much harder. Also, when I first saw a Banda Snatch, I legit thought it was some sort of crawling clown on all fours.
Oh absolutely! It certainly has everything a game should, even if it's a bit convoluted and hard to follow at times since NPCs outright lie to you! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought Banda Snatches were clows, haha... this comment made my day!
The box art lured me into this game. I liked that you could kill enemies by shooting the wall above them and the arrow falling down for example. Good music and visuals as well. I must have been about 7 and my english wasnt good enough to understand the text. Somehow I managed to complete it once. And I dont remember playing it much after that. It was an exhausting end to the game as I recall.
All said and done, the box art is pretty nice, especially for Master System box art that seems to have such a range of detail and effort! But good for you for finishing it so young... I barely made it through now, and it truly felt like an accomplishment!
@@hungrygoriya yeah feels like I graduated to big boy pants after that orderal :))) thank you for covering these old games that has faded into the past
This game really illustrates the kind of pure antagonism toward the player that was a feature of game design in the 80s. We must have all been masochists.
From all the discussions I had with people while playing this through on stream, I didn't meet a single other person that pushed through this game. Lots of people had it and played it, but nobody got to the end. Maybe I'm the only masochist out there :(
@@hungrygoriya I think that potentially makes you "Lord of the Sword" world champion! Perhaps you're the only person who has ever actually finished it!?
Yep, it's a good comparator in terms of world size and layout... branching paths to different places, etc. Much less fun than Simon's Quest in my opinion!
That slow down bug did the opposite to me. =( It was so slow the collisions failed to register half of the time and I would get nailed =( Still, I took the game back, asked if I could swap it for the same game, but the bug persisted. The guy at the shop said he had a new one coming in next week and asked if I would like to take a different game in the mean time. I never got another Lord of the Sword game but I must have swapped through twenty games before the guy said, "There's new console coming soon, so if you like I'll take your Master System games and trade them for it" Sure enough I traded most of my collection for a shiny new Mega Drive. So indirectly Lord of the Sword got me a Mega Drive =)
Oh man!! You know, I saw someone else play through and the same thing happened to them too... I wonder what kind of bug that was, but I'm sorry that you weren't able to push through it. The game gets a little weird after that anyway, so maybe you dodged a bullet! Long live the Mega Drive! I hope you had less problems on that console!
The pendant situation in Faxanadu IS a bug. You basically have the effects of the pendant when you first start out in Eolis. I bet you knew that already, though, since you're a Faxanadu fanatic like myself. :-)
I knew that it was a bug, but not that you have the effects from the get-go like that. That's really interesting! I've always considered picking up the pendant going to something like "hard mode" but really it's just putting you down to what would've been normal mode. Mind blowing!
@@hungrygoriya yep, that's why I still have not finished this one. I do like its manual though, it has nice art work and the map looks great. Could have been a good game if it was done right. Oh and well done for finishing it! I am impressed
This is exactly like Cadash, except in that game you can level up and gain better equaipment. It's not terribly great, but is expensive. I do enjoy the grind however. (Sorry for all the comments. I'm kind of binging your channel atm.)
No need to apologize for the comments... I'm glad people are watching! I have a copy of Cadash but haven't had a chance to play it yet. It looked really interesting and right up my alley since I'm a pretty big fan of sidescrolling games with RPG elements (even though this one doesn't have many, I had been hopeful).
Certainly does look like one where there's a neat concept, but the execution feels utterly punishing. I kind of dislike when a game lies to you outright. Or that continue system, *urgh*. Props for seeing it through to the end, I don't think I could have in all seriousness, that's for sure!
You're right! It was really promising and with a little more work, it could've been something really fantastic. And by the end, it was a matter of principle. I couldn't just leave it behind!
I have it in my head that the Master System had really terrible audio hardware, but your last few reviews are really making me re-think that assumption.
I did borrow some NES tunes for this since there wasn't a lot of music in this one, but a lot of it is from other games for the Master System! Glad you're coming around!
Don't like this game but I do really like your voice and reviews :)) Can you please do Y's next? Or some of my favorites: Alien 3, King's Quest, Wonderboy 2, 3 and 4, Taz-Mania, Deep Duck trouble and/or Alex Kidd in Miracle World? 🎮🕹
I can only review the games I've played and I'm still working through lots of the Master System library... stay tuned! I did a playthrough of Ys a long while ago now so there's a whole set of videos of that, but I don't know that I'll review it unless I review a later game and talk about it a little bit in there. Thanks for your kindness!
Wow, I remember my dad paid a lot of money for this game and it took me an hour to hate. It was my first RPG. After a few days, I accepted the challenge and I ended enjoying it. But it is not a masterpiece for sure. It has its moments.
I definitely appreciated the challenge for what it was. Now that I know what to do, I'd definitely play it again sometime. I'm glad you came around on it eventually!
I actually like this game. Pretty similar to Castlevania II Simon's Quest game design wise. It has its flaws like you said but if you know what to do this can definitely be completed an about an hour.
Oh for sure! You definitely need to figure out where to go in a first playthrough, which can be fulfilling and frustrating all at the same time. I liked it!
Omg, I remember mowing countless lawns to get the $50 to buy this game back in 1989. I was absolutely devastated when I played it and couldn’t believe I just worked for 3 months straight just to buy this steaming pile... I was literally crying and Target wouldn’t let me exchange it for a different game...
I've got a soft spot for this game, remember it well from when I was a kid. I think it looks lovely and despite being 8-bit it's got a lot of atmosphere. But it's without doubt one of the most frustrating games ever! Not sure how you or anyone else managed to complete it!
It does look great! Landau especially had lots of great detail. I loved his boots most for some reason, but there was lots of great ambiance in the different locations. It took me three streams or so to get through it. The first few times I played I game over'd a ton and just kept trying. By the fourth stream, I managed to get past the arena fight against the five bosses with all my lives and saw the second half of the game for the first time. Thankfully things ease a bit after that wall and I was able to make it. I'm just as shocked as you are. There were many times in that last stretch where I kept thinking it was all going to fall apart.
@@hungrygoriya the 5 bosses section was absolutely brutal, yhe difficulty of these 8 bit games was something else. I think this game invented rage quitting before it had a name! I certainly quit in anger quite a few times!
Great review! This is hands down the most BS game I have ever played 😂. I just played through this game trying to beat it without using a guide or any hints, and ultimately had to get help from GameFAQs because it was simply impossible. As you mentioned in the review after a certain point (after the fight with the boss in the marsh/bog) you are given NO direction where to actually go and the fact NPCs flat out lie to you makes it 10x worse. And since there’s no way of knowing who’s telling the truth and the fact NPCs repeat old phrases you’re just sent in an endless loop trying to (hopefully) trigger something new on a mere 10 lives. It’s the most broken game I ever seen. After finally beating it, Im convinced this game was made my satan and I never want to touch it again. 😂
@@hungrygoriya I can’t deny there’s a charm to the game. I had it as a kid and would play it for hours making very little headway before running out of lives. The furthest I ever got was the pirate boss fight (ended up being the hardest boss in the game by far) and at the time I wasn’t even sure how I was able to trigger the correct dialogue to finally open that up. I enjoy the feel it brings of going on a grand quest and adventuring. These are my favorite style of games. So with the ability to save, a menu screen (lol) and cohesive dialogue, this could have been Sega’s answer to Zelda 2.
I am clearly watching all of your stuff but in a really strange order because it's all from the recommended page. If I ever visit your video page I will surely be the lord of the sword.
I hope you'll do it! Most of the people I've spoken to about Lord of the Sword say they've played it but haven't finished it before. Join me on this side!
Lol…. Great review…. Middle finger…. I had this game and put a lot of time into it…. I can’t remember if I ever finished it…. That probably means I didn’t…👍
It was definitely a hard-fought battle to make it through this one successfully. I can't tell you how many times I thought the wheels were coming off but somehow everything worked out. I'm glad it's behind me now and that I got to bring something to you all about it. It deserves to be talked about!
As the biggest Faxanadu lover on planet earth, I'm grappling with a polite way to say that Faxanadu knocks Lord of the Sword straight out of the park! It has a few more bells and whistles, upgrades, a weird experience system, a great soundtrack, etc. Lord of the Sword is like side-scrolling action adventure RPG-lite... it's hard to find a game quite so bare-bones.
I had LOTS when I was about 13-14. It was kinda underwhelming, even as a kid who loved games, I thought it kinda sucked, gameplay was repetitive, fighting was frustrating, goals were not self-explainatory. I much prefered Spellcaster and Kenseiden.
I never beat this as a kid. Even with the walkthrough Sega sent me. I love this game though. The music is awesome. Edit. I think I did actually beat this game.
That walkthrough was so helpful eh? I think I saw the document online somewhere when I was making this video. And that music at the beginning when you're reading the back story? So good! It's probably one of my favourite Master System tunes.
I saved up my lunch money for this game. I had high hopes and wow, was it ever terrible. I did my best to play it as much as I can, but the entire thing was torture. Barely anything about this game was enjoyable.
It's definitely very monotonous at times, and repetitive in a way that's hard to liken to other games like it. That one really good song that plays when you're outside or when you hear the intro kept me sane through this one. Beating it is one of the hardest fought victories I've had in gaming so far! Sorry you had a bad time with it.
Huh. This one was a huge disappointment as a kid, aside from the good graphics. It was one of the first SMS games I bought after getting a Genesis + Power Base Converter, but I couldn't get into it at all. Maybe I should have given it more of a chance.
Yeah... so many little frustrating speed bumps made it tough to get through, but once you know what to do it's the same every time at least. And yeah, the art work was awesome in this game. I loved the main character's sprite, especially his bow and arrow stance. The bosses looked pretty cool too.
I love that ending. Your character standing on the wall of his castle, just flipping off everybody. Maybe there is a sequel where he starts by flipping everyone off.
I laughed out loud when I saw it! It was very fitting! If there was a sequel to this one, I'd be all over it, no question.
Wow, I admire your patience for finishing this game. I think I would have rage quit and smashed the cartridge! :)
Ahh those lovely blue and white maps found in SMS manuals, such fond memories.
Thanks for sharing!
You're very welcome! They're pretty useful... I'm surprised more people don't find and use them!
I loved this game. I probably got the game in 2nd grade and always got stuck at Paradin. Then one summer in high school I decided to dust off the Master System and give it another try and finally beat it.
Right on! Congrats! That Paradin fight was terrible and I don't know if I would've made it through without that glitching...
This is another nostalgia driven title I use to play with my friend who had a SMS back in the day. We tried to beat it many times whenever there wasn’t something else to play. Years later I did manage to find a stack of games for cheap at the time and this was one that brought the nostalgia back! Including all the cursing from it’s difficulty 🤬
Unfortunately I lost my original collection so it might be a while until I can try this again, but when I do that music will bring me back to those early years of gaming 😊
Oh wow! I found this game really tough even as an adult so I can't imagine how it would've been back then for you two!
I hope you do get a chance to experience it again someday. It's definitely something beatable with a little practice.
I struggled with this game horribly back in the late 80s early 90s when I got it. I could never figure out where to go.
It's pretty confusing at a few points. I don't blame you!
I wouldn't call it anything close to a favourite, but it's definitely far from what I'd consider to be a bad game.
it is actually a great game
remember this is an 8bit game
Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Over 25 years since i beat this.
You forgot to mention the awesome music on the pause screen 😋
You're very welcome! If I'm being totally honest, I don't think I ever paused the game. I just drew my own map and used the one in the manual for the most part! I've heard the whole soundtrack though... much of it is great!
@@hungrygoriya take yourself 5mins and go and pause it....its worth the scrambled disbelief lol
Thanks very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Those ambiguous hitboxes look maddening! Almost seems like a janky undercooked Cadash
It does feel a little like that, now that you mention it! I hadn't yet experienced Cadash when I played Lord of the Sword.
Daymn hungry, we needed you back then. But are happy we have you now : )
I'm always late to the party!
I'm loving your videos. You cover all these obscure old games. Keep up the good work!
Too kind! Thanks so much :)
That's funny... I feel like I've gotten better at games as time's gone on.
@@hungrygoriya I think it's just that back in the day we only had a few games and played them to death. All us old heads probably just burnt out playing our few games to death and don't have the attention span anymore, lol. So glad there's a new generation that can make vids like this.
@@KingofCrusher We're probably close to the same age! We only had a few NES/Genesis games when I was growing up too.
Knowing what to expect and what not to do should definitely help :)
Review Highlights:
-It is always nice to see you referencing the manual and then showing how said things in the manual play out in actual gameplay
-I liked how you showed off the power differences in the two swords side-by-side
-I was happy the wiener kick guy made a cameo. That animation cracked me up xD
-I'm glad to see you highlight the "victory lap" as a major negative in the game but now I am curious what would actually happen if you had lost all of your lives after defeating the final boss.
For some reason, I feel like you swinging your sword at the scorpion at the end perfectly sums up this game
Great review as always!
Haha yep... just about sums it up indeed :D And thank you very much for checking it out!
I'll just know to keep my expectations low 😊
Thanks for another great trip down memory lane with these Master System reviews!
Great video! Enjoyed watching the streams!
Thank you very much! I'm glad you were able to catch the live learning for this one.
Great review! Very in-depth.
I always look forward to your new videos, I've discovered so many Master System games xD
This one almost seems a little mean, at times. Though I do always love when a retro game gives me one, singular congratulation xD
Mean is a great way to put it. It really makes you work for your win, that's for sure! :)
This game was my Dark Souls when I was eleven. Painful. Great job on finishing it!
Oh man... any plans to come back to it some day? It took me a lot of practice, but if I can do it, so can you!
You never know... I'm probably not as patient with these things as you though :-)
@@mazurkagurka I do have endless patience, but it was really put to the test here. If you do try, I hope you're successful.
I was enthralled by this as a kid, but never got to play it a lot since I had borrowed it from a friend for a few days a few times. I haven't taken the time to complete it as an adult, but I'm happy to have it in my collection. Great review!
I hope you'll try it out again soon. I talked to many people in my streams about it and lots of people had played it but nobody had beaten it!
It was quite satisfying to beat as a young teen but not nearly as satisfying as Ultima 4. I would put my time into Ultima if you havent already.
I was just watching this episode and thinking,Lord of the Sword is like the Dark Souls of the 80$
The only Dark Souls game I've played is King's Field. That was a funny and fun game!
good & honest review of this one.
That ground design at 5:10 looks so cool
I do really like the colours in this game! The caves were quite pretty!
@@hungrygoriya absolutely. Game has issues but isn't trash, that's for sure
I bought this game as a loose cart from a pawn shop in 2004 purely based on the name. Was looking for a good RPG! Never really got into it cause I was mainly playing mega drive games. Thanks for the review.
You're welcome! Do you think you might play it sometime? It's tough to master, but getting through it was worth the effort just to say I made it!
@@hungrygoriya i dont think ill ever play it to completion, got too many other games on my list first. but ill definitely play it for a bit for nostalgic reasons.
@@djberryhardkore That's fair... the backlog never ends.
Seems like an unconventional yet memorable game. I don't know too many 8-bit fantasy games with that much text to read at the beginning!
Yeah! The story is good and they followed it relatively well, but it took a lot of thinking after finishing it to find out how I actually fulfilled the other two tasks on the list... it didn't come together in the moment because it was just about as clear as mud!
I loved and loathe this game when I was younger. Good review
Did you ever make it through? It was a tough one as an adult even!
@@hungrygoriya no lol. I was confused bc you have to talk to the elder a couple of times to move forward. I defeated the first boss but then was just lost and got bored fast. Govellius was great though.
@@dovalink744 Fair enough... there was a lot more forward momentum in Golvellius. You're absolutely right! The talking multiple times thing is mean!
Hey! I’ve just discovered your channel, and am enjoying a little binge session of a few videos. You’ve got a great voice for narration. Good work!
Right on! Thank you very much for the compliment. I hope you enjoy searching through the channel :)
I love this show! Her voice is soothing, and I like the content.
A truly fitting end for such a daunting journey.🧙♂️
Love that ending.
Wow, this game seems pretty rough. Looks great visually, though. Especially those killer clowns! Props to you for finishing this one.
Thank you! I think with a little bit more time, this would've truly been great. When's your playthrough happening? :)
Thank you for this video. I've been looking at it on eBay for awhile now.
Are you going to pick it up? Last I recall looking it wasn't super expensive.
@@hungrygoriya I believe I will. I'm looking at some of the option on eBay as we speak. I'm trying to find the best condition game.
*Edit* Nevermind, I just saw that you used a mix of other tracks, lol.
This game just shows that Trollface was born in 1988, with TWO BIG TROLLS (the sword that is actually weaker and the ending not being right after the final boss)
I did play the game when I was a child but I only managed to beat it at around 2015, with a walkthrough.
I absolutely forgot about this game! Did you beat Golvellius?
I did! It was challenging but I definitely enjoyed it overall.
(I did find that anoying too!)
Thanks for the informative review.
Totally... it has a good set of bones.
The box art is what sold this game to me😀
Pretty much all 80s adventure game box art speaks to me! I don't blame you!
The middle finger 😂
I feel like they at least tried when making this game. I really disliked it the first time I played it, but maybe I judged too harshly.
I think the fact I only have a Sega control stick makes the combat just that much harder. Also, when I first saw a Banda Snatch, I legit thought it was some sort of crawling clown on all fours.
Oh absolutely! It certainly has everything a game should, even if it's a bit convoluted and hard to follow at times since NPCs outright lie to you!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought Banda Snatches were clows, haha... this comment made my day!
I love her soothing voice. I go to sleep listening to it.
Right on! I've seen my videos added to "sleep playlists" in the past, so this isn't all that surprising to me.
That scorpion at the end lol
That scorpion is not my friend.
Always loved this game since my childhood. Don't hear about it much!
It's a fun one! I'd have to get some practice in to get good enough to finish it again if I play it again soon. It's been a while.
@@plateoshrimp9685 I doubt it :)
Wow, this game the way you described it reminds me of Simon's Quest in some regards.
Yep, it's a good comparator in terms of world size and layout... branching paths to different places, etc. Much less fun than Simon's Quest in my opinion!
I burst out laughing when you described the game's final send off. Thanks for that! 😆
It made me laugh so much. I had just finished sweating my way to the end and then that? How rude!

I appreciate your ability to take a positive spin on this whole thing, but I don't think you could have sold me on this game any *less.*
I would never peddle Lord of the Sword out of a trench coat... there are much better games out there!
If it only had a save function. Even password save would have made it so much better to play
Absolutely! You pretty much need everything to line up perfectly for you to make it through without the luxury of a save.
@@hungrygoriya yep, that's why I still have not finished this one. I do like its manual though, it has nice art work and the map looks great. Could have been a good game if it was done right.

It's all very confusing. Nobody knows, me included!
@@hungrygoriya You'll love Cadash in that case.
Having NPCs lie to you is a feature of DQ11S that you can turn on.
I haven't played DQ11 yet, but that sounds like something I'd leave off!
Congratulation!
It's almost a "This story is happy end" scenario at some points :)
@@hungrygoriya All of your base are belong to us?
I’ve been meaning to play this one for a while now. But if it ends with a middle finger... lol
Hahaha you might enjoy it regardless. It's a great way to end an okay game :D
I have it in my head that the Master System had really terrible audio hardware, but your last few reviews are really making me re-think that assumption.
I did borrow some NES tunes for this since there wasn't a lot of music in this one, but a lot of it is from other games for the Master System! Glad you're coming around!
I love a lot of the music on the master system. Honestly I prefer the sound of the system over the Genesis.
@@Darko1226 The Genesis is very hit and miss for me. I'm rarely disappointed with the Master System stuff, though Ghouls 'n Ghosts was not so good.
Did they misstranslate “paladin”?
I imagine they did, yep!
GG!
Don't like this game but I do really like your voice and reviews :))
Can you please do Y's next?
I must see you....I'm in love with the voice
:( Did you eventually come around on it at all? It's definitely rough in places but far from the worst thing I've played.
@@hungrygoriya No, I could never get into it... ended up trading it for another master system game, I think it was Transbot.
Thanks for watching!
@@harrysboy I certainly sighed a lot. That's how I knew this one was getting under my skin!
@@hungrygoriya oh one more thing, I just loved that bow and arrow mechanic. As clunky as the combat was the bow was so clean for its time.
@@harrysboy Absolutely! Up to jump definitely sucked, but having one weapon per button was wonderful.
I could see Satan working away at this at his ax-grinding wheel. It's a weapon of destruction!
I kinda like the main music though, haha
Hey, whatever floats your boat!
This game sounds so frustrating...yet, I feel compelled to play it someday!
I hope you'll do it! Most of the people I've spoken to about Lord of the Sword say they've played it but haven't finished it before. Join me on this side!
@@hungrygoriya I have no choice now haha! :-D
Lol…. Great review…. Middle finger…. I had this game and put a lot of time into it…. I can’t remember if I ever finished it…. That probably means I didn’t…👍
It was a very hard game for me, but I enjoyed it well enough!
Sounds like a pretty terrible experience to be honest. But thanks for sticking it out to provide us with a nice review Goriya. :)
It was definitely a hard-fought battle to make it through this one successfully. I can't tell you how many times I thought the wheels were coming off but somehow everything worked out. I'm glad it's behind me now and that I got to bring something to you all about it. It deserves to be talked about!
Whyy this video doesn't have CC ;_;
I could swear it used to! I'm adding some so please be sure to check back soon, and sorry about that!
I feel like this game is basically sega faxanadu. It's ok. I liked faxanadu a bit more
As the biggest Faxanadu lover on planet earth, I'm grappling with a polite way to say that Faxanadu knocks Lord of the Sword straight out of the park! It has a few more bells and whistles, upgrades, a weird experience system, a great soundtrack, etc. Lord of the Sword is like side-scrolling action adventure RPG-lite... it's hard to find a game quite so bare-bones.
Best. Ending. Eva! #XD
I had LOTS when I was about 13-14. It was kinda underwhelming, even as a kid who loved games, I thought it kinda sucked, gameplay was repetitive, fighting was frustrating, goals were not self-explainatory. I much prefered Spellcaster and Kenseiden.
It's one of my least favourite Master System games I've played for all the reasons you mentioned. It's just okay.
Had this gane yrs like the rpg adventure elements
Yeah! It's pretty fun!
Lord of the Sword sounds like a Lord of the Rings parody, not gonna lie.
I wish this game had more to do with Lord of the Rings, honestly!
Huh. This one was a huge disappointment as a kid, aside from the good graphics. It was one of the first SMS games I bought after getting a Genesis + Power Base Converter, but I couldn't get into it at all. Maybe I should have given it more of a chance.
It's a tricky one and I definitely struggled with it until I carved out a path through the game, but I did end up liking it overall.
Never seen any of the further levels of the game. Chapeau. I got frustrated with this game pretty quickly.
now this was funny :D
I wonder AVGN has raged out to this game in a video??? 😂😂
I don't recall a time when he's mentioned it before.
Hungry Goriya he probably should!
@@jaychild78 I've rarely seen him cover much Master System... it's a sacred console :D
Hungry Goriya love your videos btw really enjoying them.
@@jaychild78 Thanks for having a look through the channel. I appreciate it!
This sounds so frustrating. I hate when games intentionally mislead you. I like the large sprites though.
Yeah... so many little frustrating speed bumps made it tough to get through, but once you know what to do it's the same every time at least.
And yeah, the art work was awesome in this game. I loved the main character's sprite, especially his bow and arrow stance. The bosses looked pretty cool too.
Middle finger, LMAO. About sums that game up. That's why Atari ET also looks like a middle finger.
The game was mean in so many ways, absolutely! Just like some visual profanity!
Lord of the Sword sounds like a title a LARPest would give themselves
Hahaha yes!
