I think she's certainly one of the more memorable characters from the PC-98 era. I suppose the experience of finding things or people to be "artificial" is also something that a lot of us can relate to. The sequence where that word is repeated at the end of every line is pretty fun. Gives everyone something to think about. Well done!

Yumemi's theme already did stand out to me among PC-98s, but when I work on lyrics, I always hope to find ways to make myself and others appreciate it even more. Deciding where words should go lets me recognize and understand the flow better. And when there are parts that I can start to associate hard-hitting words with (like ARTIFICIAL) the melody sticks in my mind a lot easier. So I'm really glad if others feel the same in that sense!

tfw doing nothing of note, when suddenly bam, new Lyrica Live cover of one of my favorite Touhou tunes. That was my best Christmas present this year, it really captivates how interesting of a character Yumemi is. In a world where everything is fantasy, she uses artificial powers to compete with actual magicians, in the hope of studying their magic and proving its existence to her home world. A shame she's stuck in PC-98 hell where she probably won't make the transition to Windows canon any time soon, because I find her somehow even more interesting than Sumireko, who is one of my top favorites as well.

Finally, the PC98 songs! I can't wait to see Konngara's. Really gave off that "Kabuki Performance" theme to it, and I'd love to see you adapt its theatrics into lyrics.
I'd Squeal like a school girl when Konngaras theme is done. It does Give off the Performance, though I also get the feel of a Grand Battle from it as it speeds up, then when it slows down, it comes back to Peace.

Like, it's strange that yumemi is from the future outside world but appeared way before sumureiko (back when reimu was visibly younger) . If we take consideration of how Gensokyo has fairies, and humans got spirited away often, and that fairies never mentions the fairy realm... then there a lot of chances that the myth of the fairy realm is actually people who got spirited away in Gensokyo or another place like the moon capital. In some stories, in the fairy realm times goes faster and in other slower than the mortal one. Due how time is relative and basically time units are an invention of humanity, time in Gensokyo has been changed multiple times. From Sakuya's power, to everything in IN, it's easy to think that even time was sealed away, separated from the rest of the universe. However, I think Yumemi is form another world, isn't she? so she looks like a human but maybe is an alien? In any case, I believe that Alice used her grimoire to create a parallel universe (considering how in the extra she created her own wonderland with the book, but now it's sealed because it's dangerous). But that is mainly a headcanon.
Be careful, Maribel intrinsically has strange time shenanigans going on when going to Gensokyo, considering how a note written by her was found in the Bamboo Forest of the Lost several hundred years ago, as recorded in Akyuu's Perfect Memento in Strict Sense... so her presence is all over the place in Gensokyo's timeline anyway.

It is one of the most cliche lines in the whole song, contrasting against the fascinating list of "artificial" facets of our lives, or the grandiose claims of science, magic, theories, and personal philosophy. Yet this single line completely changes the tone at the exact point where the music itself changes. Before this line, Yumemi is building a good argument - so much of our world that we take for granted is artificial, and science is increasingly running itself into corners with conventionally agreed theories. But once she starts saying "See? I have no choice!" it starts feeling like she's trying to justify her actions to us, just like she justifies them to herself. It's a line of argument that is used when someone knows they're doing something wrong. From this line onwards, the music transitions to a faster, more desperate sounding tune, and her arguments seem to become incoherent ramblings that might make sense to her, but are completely meaningless when taken out of context or told to a person who hasn't gone through Yumemi's entire thought process. Her argument stops becoming a critique of science and the world at large, and more an attempt to appeal her personal struggles, causing us to doubt whether her original case she argued was even valid. Ironic that the one line in the whole song that is easiest to empathise with suddenly causes Yumemi to alienate the target audience. It's the point where we realise that no matter how reasonable or on point her other arguments are, we remember she is ultimately a *mad* scientist.

In lost word magic was defined as "Artificial miracle" and Yumemi has created "Artificial magic". If she was able to create Artificial magic, I think she had a lot deeper understandig of the very nature of magic than anyone in Gensokyo. People tend to separate magic and science in most universes, but if magic was to exist, it would be treated as another force of universe, and so be subject of physics,and shoul be included in Theories. After all, any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Actualy, there was an Experiment that suggests posibility of existing another fundamental force in the universe, one which we had no idea could exist, and some proposed unification Theories allow for a lot more theorytical forces to exist. Maybe magic could be describes as one of them, or maybe as more complex problem, and it is exactly what Yumemi did. I with my friend liked to create simplistic theorytical descriptions of magic in various universes, some of them including a new fundamental force.
Honestly, this is just about it. If magic *did* exist, we'd explain it as a science, and it'd lose it's charm. The moment it's no longer conjuring a fireball, and instead just igniting the air and applying a force, it's just that. Sure, some might keep calling it a fireball, but when magic is explained, it's no longer magic, just a process, like splitting a molecule, or charging a battery.

Another Explained phenomenon, gives birth to 5 unxplained ones. There is Beauty in unknown, and there is Beauty in Discovery. And we'll never discover all unknown, so fret not that we will delete all charm. There always will be some more "magic" to explain.

never thought i'd see this kind of love for a pc98 character through a music video and song like this! i've been thinking a bit about how what we read and learn doesn't necessarily translate to the reality that we experience, so it's nice to be reminded of a character that follows that train of thought.
Oh my god, this is my favorite Touhou official theme ever, and seeing you make lyrics of this is so incredible! Seeing Chiyuri just cutting in is so strangely cute That laugh at the end though Yumemi's my favorite character in Touhou so far too, and it's quite a shame that ZUN has decided to (almost) never revisit the PC-98 era ever again

Nice song... chiyuri sounded a bit high-pitched, while yumemi's voice reminded me a bit Renko's... (But then again, you, (or your friend) kinda voiced her though...).
The relationship between Sumireko, Renko and the main cast of the series is a lot harder to pin down than most people think, and Yumemi is proof - After all, her description of the outside world matches Renko and Maribel's, despite the fact that she gives no hint of having traveled backwards in time to get to Gensokyo, but she and Chiyuri could physically travel there like Sumireko. If Gensokyo is a separate realm with its own space-time, why would time have to pass at the same rate in both? Was Sumireko the one who traveled forward in time to reach Gensokyo while the rest are in the actual "present"? Could it even be said that one time period in the outside world is the "present" for Gensokyo and another one is the "future"? I could go on, but I think there's another piece of the puzzle that nearly everyone missed in this discussion, and it's included in this very video - The bassline for Strawberry Crisis is nearly identical to the opening notes of Nuclear Fusion, Okuu's theme. This might just be because both characters are science-themed, but it might go deeper than that. The true ending of PoDD involves Yumemi and Chiyuri choosing to stay and live in Gensokyo, so could they have taken part in Okuu's backstory somehow? We know Kanako told Okuu about Lord Yatagarasu's corpse being buried in the flames of hell, but the way Gods work in Touhou doesn't leave much room for a God to not only die, but leave a physical corpse that can be eaten. And given Kanako's attitude towards modernity and innovation, she could have taken interest in Yumemi and perhaps used her aid to create a "dead" avatar for Yatagarasu that could be consumed. Either way, I can't help but feel like Yumemi would not be above trying to capture Okuu and conduct live experiments on her should they meet in person...
Cody at Some More News has been talking a lot about how money is fake lately. It feels kinda nice and validating to hear more people talk about these things that I tried to explain to my school mates back in 4th grade. Addressing the song: It's really nice to hear some more PC-98 era stuff; I don't know of all that many good covers of Strawberry Crisis so it's nice hearing this track get some more love as well. ^^

Hmmm. It is very difficult to conceive lyricals that rhythmically align and are not repetitive or in that way "irritating" given this soundtrack is half the time the same little... Ditty? Lol lack of better words. It was not done unwell. That said, this one conveys a deep meaning similar to the previous ones and I love it absolutely! I loved to listen to this ost too growing up, even if some may find it annoying because it's repetitive compared to other pieces in other franchise . I should meet up with Yumemi, Maybe she could use my weapon ammo for research. The element orbs i use are not from Gensokyo or Avalice so it could be using a unknown form of magic (I have no idea about how they work so if she could find the reason my gun needs those orbs, she could upgrade it so those orbs are unneeded)
I also want to mention how I'm a bit disappointed you didn't mention Yumemi's desire to combine both science and magic (and maybe some religion too?) But whatever, focusing on the fact that no one believes her is also a great take (and painfully relatable)
I definitely do appreciate all of those themes! The blurry border of science/magic/religion is a huge interesting theme throughout Touhou as a whole. I can think of Rikako, Patchouli, and Kanako as other characters who touch on it too. In Yumemi's lyrics, _"History's guide, a double edged sign"_ referred to her belief in the religious symbolism of a cross, which signifies "sacrifice." And then, comparing her own "artificial magic" to various "artificial" scientific and technological achievements listed at the beginning was _sort of_ supposed to suggest a relationship there. I'm sorry if it didn't feel emphasized enough though! I'm glad you enjoyed regardless, and that you enjoy Yumemi as a character.

Goodness, what a hard part of the lore to explain to a newcomer... These characters are from the Touhou Project. A series of Japanese bullet hell games in which you play as Reimu Hakurei, shrine maiden of the Hakurei shrine, and essentially Gensokyo's guardian. The characters featured here are from one of the PC-98 era touhou games. The main red one is Yumemi, a college professor who's dead set on proving the existence of magic, and the other one is her assistant named Chiyuri. Yumemi built a device that would allow her to travel into Gensokyo, and so she did. Of course, like practically every character in the series, it caused problems.
Chiyuri's "Not it!" when Yumemi says they need a sacrifice still cracks me up to this day.
A reminder that Chiyuri once whack Yumemi over the head with a folding-chair to knock some sense into her (this can be seen in Marisa's ending)

In lost word magic was defined as "Artificial miracle" and Yumemi has created "Artificial magic". If she was able to create Artificial magic, I think she had a lot deeper understandig of the very nature of magic than anyone in Gensokyo. People tend to separate magic and science in most universes, but if magic was to exist, it would be treated as another force of universe, and so be subject of physics,and shoul be included in Theories. After all, any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Actualy, there was an Experiment that suggests posibility of existing another fundamental force in the universe, one which we had no idea could exist, and some proposed unification Theories allow for a lot more theorytical forces to exist. Maybe magic could be describes as one of them, or maybe as more complex problem, and it is exactly what Yumemi did. I with my friend liked to create simplistic theorytical descriptions of magic in various universes, some of them including a new fundamental force.
Honestly, this is just about it.
If magic *did* exist, we'd explain it as a science, and it'd lose it's charm. The moment it's no longer conjuring a fireball, and instead just igniting the air and applying a force, it's just that. Sure, some might keep calling it a fireball, but when magic is explained, it's no longer magic, just a process, like splitting a molecule, or charging a battery.
@@itsumikoroko I will tell you that maybe that magic loses it's charm, but there is no such a thing as complete knowledge. The more we know, the more we know we don't know. Another Explained phenomenon, gives birth to 5 unxplained ones. There is Beauty in unknown, and there is Beauty in Discovery. And we'll never discover all unknown, so fret not that we will delete all charm. There always will be some more "magic" to explain.
The biggest baka in Touhou: whoever was in Yumemi's academy who doubted her research.

never thought i'd see this kind of love for a pc98 character through a music video and song like this! i've been thinking a bit about how what we read and learn doesn't necessarily translate to the reality that we experience, so it's nice to be reminded of a character that follows that train of thought.

Another long forgotten dream, yes a PC98 dream! Strawberry Crisis is still one of my favorites and glad to see- hear you adding lyrics to it.
The relationship between Sumireko, Renko and the main cast of the series is a lot harder to pin down than most people think, and Yumemi is proof - After all, her description of the outside world matches Renko and Maribel's, despite the fact that she gives no hint of having traveled backwards in time to get to Gensokyo, but she and Chiyuri could physically travel there like Sumireko. If Gensokyo is a separate realm with its own space-time, why would time have to pass at the same rate in both? Was Sumireko the one who traveled forward in time to reach Gensokyo while the rest are in the actual "present"? Could it even be said that one time period in the outside world is the "present" for Gensokyo and another one is the "future"?
I could go on, but I think there's another piece of the puzzle that nearly everyone missed in this discussion, and it's included in this very video - The bassline for Strawberry Crisis is nearly identical to the opening notes of Nuclear Fusion, Okuu's theme. This might just be because both characters are science-themed, but it might go deeper than that. The true ending of PoDD involves Yumemi and Chiyuri choosing to stay and live in Gensokyo, so could they have taken part in Okuu's backstory somehow? We know Kanako told Okuu about Lord Yatagarasu's corpse being buried in the flames of hell, but the way Gods work in Touhou doesn't leave much room for a God to not only die, but leave a physical corpse that can be eaten. And given Kanako's attitude towards modernity and innovation, she could have taken interest in Yumemi and perhaps used her aid to create a "dead" avatar for Yatagarasu that could be consumed. Either way, I can't help but feel like Yumemi would not be above trying to capture Okuu and conduct live experiments on her should they meet in person...

It is very difficult to conceive lyricals that rhythmically align and are not repetitive or in that way "irritating" given this soundtrack is half the time the same little... Ditty? Lol lack of better words.
It was not done unwell. That said, this one conveys a deep meaning similar to the previous ones and I love it absolutely! I loved to listen to this ost too growing up, even if some may find it annoying because it's repetitive compared to other pieces in other franchise . I was honestly a bit hesitant to listen to this one because if my previous nostalgia

I definitely do appreciate all of those themes! The blurry border of science/magic/religion is a huge interesting theme throughout Touhou as a whole. I can think of Rikako, Patchouli, and Kanako as other characters who touch on it too.
In Yumemi's lyrics, _"History's guide, a double edged sign"_ referred to her belief in the religious symbolism of a cross, which signifies "sacrifice." And then, comparing her own "artificial magic" to various "artificial" scientific and technological achievements listed at the beginning was _sort of_ supposed to suggest a relationship there. I'm sorry if it didn't feel emphasized enough though! I'm glad you enjoyed regardless, and that you enjoy Yumemi as a character.

Goodness, what a hard part of the lore to explain to a newcomer...
These characters are from the Touhou Project. A series of Japanese bullet hell games in which you play as Reimu Hakurei, shrine maiden of the Hakurei shrine, and essentially Gensokyo's guardian.
The characters featured here are from one of the PC-98 era touhou games. The main red one is Yumemi, a college professor who's dead set on proving the existence of magic, and the other one is her assistant named Chiyuri. Yumemi built a device that would allow her to travel into Gensokyo, and so she did. Of course, like practically every character in the series, it caused problems.
