As someone who's only ever been able to buy Walmart stuff on my budget, switching to Amazon is a step up for me. Also, I'd be too worried about what might be on a used couch. No thanks. There's some stuff I would just not be willing to buy used.

2 years ago we finally replaced the furniture in our bedroom. I loath the modern style that's prevalent at the moment. I wanted elaborate 4 poster bed. I searched high and low. But nothing. Low and behold, I found what I wanted on Amazon. At least it looked like what I had in mind. I was terrified buying such a major piece from Amazon. But I was pleasantly surprised. It's absolutely beautiful!
I then had to go back to a zillion furniture stores to find a dresser and all that other stuff. But it all came together.
So I'm of the opinion that you can indeed find beautiful well made furniture pieces from Amazon. But you'll be worried until you can see it in person. Lol

❤ I'm glad you found what you wanted! It can be so hard to have a concept and actually find the piece that fits the bill and that you can afford. You represent people like me, of which there are MANY!

I buy things off of Amazon because I can't afford to buy it anywhere else. For us broke folks, there's not much affordable options other than Amazon/Target/ ikea. Also I still live in an apartment as well... so. Most people watching your videos also live in apartments.

Patience as it relates to interior redecorating is probably the single most insightful piece of advice I've come across. I know in my endeavors this past fall a lot of what I did during my searches both online and thrift focused on a two week waiting period between finding something I liked and buying it. It's amazing how often I cooled off on pieces after just a week away and coming back with new eyes, it's also meant that after revisiting something and still feeling good about it only furthered my excitement for a purchase!

In total agreement with you. I love antique, and thrifted pieces. As far as furniture, I like well built furniture. I watch it until it goes on sale and I can afford it. No matching pieces. I had to wait awhile to get my home the way I wanted but it was worth the wait. Love your teaching my sister !

Too small? I went on Amazon specifically to find a loveseat small enough to fit in my bedroom, because I wanted the luxury of a seating area despite the limited space. All the furniture in the local stores is way too massive and would never fit. So thankful to find something at Amazon that has a perfect slender profile-and yes, I fell in love with it.
I can add the soul myself with accessories. ❤️ A nice home should be for everyone, not just people with large homes and enough cash to buy designer stuff.

I like the idea of 20-60-20. I’ve been intimidated by vintage shops but think I’m finally at the place where I’d like to start exploring them. I think part of my hang up about them is spending hundreds of dollars on something that’s used. I think that for a long time I’ve placed the newness of an item over quality. I’d rather have something from target that’s new than spend the same on a pre-owned item of better quality. Like I said though I’m starting to shift in that thinking and excited to start making vintage finds.

Open a door and the furniture blows over 🤦. Not to mention the kids that died from non sturdy furniture and the forests that IKEA gets their wood from are illegally harvested. I try my best not to support them unless I really can't get it anywhere else.

We visited a young couple’s home recently. It was quite attractive with stuff from places like Ikea, Crate and Barrel etc. Almost everything was a shade of grey. No books, bad art and tchokes from places like HomeGoods. Like you said ‘ No soul’
At the same age and stage of life, we had a motley collection of hand me down furniture and lots of home made stuff. But lots of art on the walls, books, plants, colorful fabrics and thrift shop finds. Everyone who visited admired our creative ideas. So sometimes, it’s not expensive furniture that makes a great room, but ingenuity and having a good eye.

I totally agree. I feel the same about IKEA. I dont want my home looking like an ikea showroom. I like clean lines, texture and nature materials. I also like to mix vintage with classic pieces. Most of my decor pieces come from thrift stores ,fb marketplace and offerup. I also prefer my home to feel curated with high and low design and not cookie cutter.

I am so grateful for the massive amount of retirees here in South Florida. Their treasures fill up our thrift stores, and you can find real gems. People seem not to have patience these days; want it all at once. Plus your place will look dated in no time cuz it's all what's trendy at the moment. You have to give yourself time to evolve, so your place can grow with you. WHAT is "irrelevant" ? Are you trying to "cancel" (make irrelevant) this tips for home decorating video made by a decorator that YOU chose to watch? You don't have to follow the suggestions or try them or even like home decor.
Ideas and the sharing of ideas is a one way communication. IF you do not appreciate or agree with another's ideas then just don't try them.
On the other hand, if you have just furnished your home with all new Amazon stuff then THAT probably caused you to watch this...she did not try to make your choice irrelevant, she is giving tips to THOSE WHO ARE NOW TRYING TO GET THEIR SPACES PUT TOGETHER with unique, individual style, "personalized" you might say.

I was annoyed by the title but you make great points! That being said, I'll still shop online. You're totally right, I am not into interior design at all and I am very impatient. I am all about being quick and practical. I buy things just for their use and for my apartment not to look totally empty. The modern style many here seem to find boring is just what I like. I like boring and simple that is there for function. I get anxiety when I go to a home that is decked out. Lately I've been trying to make my place a bit more colorful but I still like very simple styles that are often on Amazon and Ikea.

On top of all the points in the video, Amazon is a terrible company that treats its employees poorly and drives small local stores out of business. Shopping locally and shopping small help money stay in your local economy and allow you to know the people and practices behind the things you buy. I haven’t bought anything from Amazon, and I never will. As for Target, we don’t have it in Canada anymore, so that’s easy.

    • @xkacie

I totally agree! I have gotten some things from Amazon...some great velvet pillow/cushion covers...but I have been redecorating my home for the last couple of years. It takes a long time sometimes but it's so worth waiting and saving for quality items. "Buy nice or buy it twice" has been my motto lately. I'm currently buying a vintage/antique art deco club chair and probably going to be spending a lot to have it reupholstered but it'll be so worth it to have that cool vibe with some history and soul in our home. So I immediately was annoyed by your title at first because we literally just ordered a sofa from Amazon (first time) because it fit our budget (fam of 4). I am for sure skeptical about it. It’s not even instant gratification because the first delivery window is about 3 wks from now. It’s legit cost. But I listened to what you had to say and you are completely right. I think most people who buy mass-produced don’t want to but it fits budget and they don’t know about or have the patience to do thrifting. I’m not keen on purchasing things like sofas that we lay on 2nd hand. I do love to buy things that “look expensive” for cheap and a lot of times I find that at Target. I also think you can buy something mass produced and make it your own by how you jazz it up, ie throw pillows, etc. Great vid!

I have to respectfully disagree with this one, my sister. A LOT of the furniture on Amazon is crap, true, but not all of it. Like with anything else, you have to look carefully.
I got an AMAZING living room chair from Amazon a few months ago. In fact, because it’s still the pandemic and I’m not entertaining, I still have the cushion wrap around it, swaddled like a baby. It’s just as nice as anything in designer magazines and it wasn’t exactly cheap.
Also, a lot of design companies sell their wares through Amazon now, as well as on their own website so they can reach a larger audience. And, as a Prime member, I don’t have to pay shipping for anything, so it’s a benefit to me.
I think the trick is that you just have to look for well made pieces that are sturdy. It’s okay if they are even a little basic because you can make the room chic with accessories and accent pieces. For example, I got a pretty standard sofa from Amazon but, a while later when I had more money, I got a fantastic custom coffee table from a very talented maker on Etsy. I also bought exotic rugs from Etsy. One day, I’ll probably upgrade the sofa but everything looks pulled together because each piece is beautiful and all in the same color family.

I am divorced and live in a studio apartment. I can never find smaller furniture in brick and mortar stores. I agree about quality though. What do you think about Wayfair? I have been looking for white bookcases but affordable ones are MDF and dont actually hold a shelf full of books. I should make the investment in real wood ones but why spend the money when what I have is working, it's just the color I don't like. It would be such a big job to unload them and paint them while living in such a small space. So, they sit being serviceable but not very pretty.

Most youtubers and bloggers use Amazon as a source of revenue from affiliate links. They buy from Amazon exclusively so others can purchase using their links and they receive a percentage from your order. It is intentional. Not wise or realistic for the rest of us.

To me it's ok to buy furnishings from mass produced places in MODERATION. An occasional piece...I think it's all about the mix.

I love this, but would love tips for people that do not live in large cities. I am always scanning fb marketplace and craigslist, but there are rarely, if ever, any good finds. I love in a smaller city and there aren't enough people here with high end budgets let alone high end taste that would be offloading their goods.

Do you think the “scalamandre” dupes in Amazon are a good alternative? I’m just really starting to leopard print and would not want to spend so much on a pillow just starting out.

    • @baiyinadotcom
      @baiyinadotcom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I haven't seen the dupes on Amazon and am tempted to search. The fact that you know scalamandre would suggest to me that you have an eye for quality fabric. If you can see quality from the photos then yes it's worth it but leopard is one of those things that easily looks cheap & tacky if it's bad. So if you have a good eye then you should be able to tell if it's good on amazon.

You can use ikea furniture, just customize it. For example, buy the sofa, but don't use their fabric, go to the fabric and reupholster yourself!
