It's true though. I read "On Writing", there are some books he doesn't even remember writing because of all the drugs. Some are brilliant, some are so terrible that even trying to cut them down to a feature length movie (and not some 4+ hour miniseries) doesn't make them interesting enough.
Some great ones: The Green Mile, Dreamcatcher
Terrible ones: Gerald's Game, Rose Madder (mostly because of the length)
