@@Shyknit (spoilers ahead, folks) For me it kind of felt like "this has been done before, albeit differently". It feels like a story that Stephen King would have come up with in the 1970s or 1980s. And in a way it feels like Flanagan is nodding in homage to the "King", or was inspired slightly by "Salem's Lot" (a darn good novel and also a satisfying and spooky 3 hour television event in 1979 directed by Tobe Hooper). All I know is Flanagan had issues with drink and also -endured- a Catholic upbringing, and threw those things into the stew. My biggest question about this series was 'why was there not one utterance of the word _vampire_ throughout all the dialogue?' Boggles my mind. :) Great show overall; everything is excellent, from musical score/ambience to visual compositons.

So Leeza Scarborough's mom, Dolly, is played by the actor who played Morella Usher (Freddie's wife) in House of Usher. Riley's dad, Ed Flynn, is played by Henry Thomas who was the young version of the dad in Hill House and Freddie in Usher.

This was Mike Flanagan’s passion project- he put his whole heart and soul into this show. It’s a true masterpiece. Prepare to be devastated in the best possible way. I cannot get enough of Flanagan’s work- but especially this one.

Its a bit different in tone from what you might expect from him but its still an S tier show. It acts as both a love letter to Poe and a total reimagining of his stories and poems, modernized perfectly while losing none of what made his work so powerful and raw. Ill say tho you'll definitely get alot more out of it if youre familiar with Poes work, but honestly its still fantastic even if youve never read a word. He is timeless
Midnight Mass appears as a couple of fun Easter eggs in Hush and Gerald’s Game, also by Flanagan. Toward the beginning of Hush, Samantha Sloyan’s character is talking to Kate Siegel’s character about her book she just read. She says “I loved Riley, I loved Erin”, and she’s talking about this story. Also, the Midnight Mass book cover also appears in a scene in Gerald’s game. I believe Flanagan said that Midnight Mass was one of his early ideas and he wasn’t sure it’d ever come to fruition.

Hi guys! First, off point, I thank you for the Bloody Appetizers sticker you sent! I disregarded the emails prior to receiving it because I thought it was some kind of scam. So surprised when it came. Glad to be on the Horror Bandwagon! I am right with you on the religious theme in this series. But definitely another star in the Flanagan Universe ! If it feels a little slow in the next couple of episodes, it hits a home run right to the end. That's Flanagan and we love him for that, lol!

This is by far my favorite Mike Flannagin production. And it’s his most personal, as the book Midnight Mass first appeared in Gerald’s Game and lasted on in Hush, being written by Kate Seigle’s character. While I have been an atheist for most of my life, I grew up Episcopalian (which is just a super liberal catholic). The discussion of religion and morals through people of various faiths was really well done and a lot of Muslims appreciated Flannagin’s attention to detail when it came to the sheriff.

This series was my very first Mike Flanagan experience. I don’t like the horror genre because I’m a coward with too much imagination but before watching this, I did not read the synopsis or even know the genre. I just thought it was going to be some mystery around a church 😂 But now that I now know where all the scary bits are, I can’t stop myself from re-watching this series multiple times. So apparently I’m okay with some horror because I then went on to watch The Fall of the House of Usher a couple of times. Have fun 😜

As someone who grew up in a small town, I can confirm they're scary, especially if you don't fit in. Everyone is up in each other's business, the gossip and rumor spreading is bananas... I couldn't wait to get away the second I graduated from high school.
the bending over is pretty normal during the sacrament and boy did hearing it pretty 'every Sunday' accurate really give me phantom pains in my knees for kneeling... but I did like the idea for him reading through more out of the book - its a super interesting take.
Yes, that was Carla's voice. This is almost a tie for me for favorite with Usher. I love Hill House for its horror, but as far as story depth this is Mike Flanagan firing on all cylinders. And yes, Bev is iconic. She's probably her most iconic role.

Even the base idea is so simple but smart, it's one of those things where you're like "why hasn't this been done before?" it makes so much sense!
