  • If a pregnant woman comes into contact with the german measles (rubella) virus, her baby is likely to suffer serious harm. Often this results in miscarriage, or if the foetus survives, the baby will be born with congenital rubella syndrome, that is affected by one or more disabilities such as mental handicap, visual impairment, deafness, heart abnormalities, among others. Here, Ian Capon talks about his experience of CRS. More information about rubella and CRS: vk.ovg.ox.ac.uk...

Thanks for sharing your story Ian. I am revising for Paediatric exams to make sure my advice for kids is top notch. Hearing personal stories really help me understand lots of things I wouldn't otherwise have access to. You are a star. Katie

I'm so happy to see that he is doing well. He speaks intelligently and can still hear and see for the most part which is not nearly as bad as it could be with CRS. Power to you Ian, you rock!

Ian is inspirational. Living a full life but heart breaking to know its avoidable. Wish more people were aware how important vaccinations are.

My mum had rubella vaccine in 1971 whilst pregnant with me and I was featured in the paper in Sydney due to being the only child who had no negative effects

Rubella or rubella vaccine? It's the rubella virus that causes the congenital defects. The vaccine protects against that

Very amazing person! Ian you're a champ to us...and I'm a fellow music lover so GLAD you found something you enjoy that much. Now there is a new menace, producing even more defects in babies - the ZIKA virus, spread by mosquitoes. I'm sorry that the world is such a cruel place and that it picks and chooses at random the souls it affects. Maybe these are the strongest souls I know!
