The engines could probably start without the doors being closed but just think how much more water would be coming in if you started backing up through those waves.
People on the upper decks would have been fine as they were in the corridors which suffered only moderate flooding, rather doubt anyone else would have been in a tight space like they were in, so Tamara was the only drowning death. On top of that, they had no way of knowing what the people aboard the Ark would do just prior to launching, so from their perspective, going through the hydraulic chamber was the only way onboard.

The most funny thing in this movie is the depiction of Mrs. Merkel (german cancellor at that time) as some sort of mother Theresa. Gave me a good laugh.

The cultural differences in technology is astounding. These subs were built by the Chinese and so they focused a lot on top quality mechanical engineering, allowing them to do things like start their engines so quickly and reverse their thrusters all to avoid hitting Mt Everest. If the US had built these subs, the animal pens would be filled with nukes and we would've obliterated Mt. Everest so that the mountain would never take another life again. One problem - multiple solutions. We have so much to learn from our eastern brethrens.
