    James is the man. Chicks love him, the boys respect him. Great aussie band with unreal lyrics and guys that can play. Timeless and really reminds me of the good old days.

    This was a stunning band.. Simon was a maestro player and James' voice was technically great. Underpinning it was this unique mix of blues and surf.....must say it again - James was amongst the best vocalists I have heard.

    Putting plagiarism allegations aside, this is a fantastic snap shot of a seminal Aussie band in its rawest form.
    I may get tarred for this but Australian Crawl were the best band this country has EVER produced, and it's America's loss for not knowing James Reyne on a wider scale.

      I agree with you.The first album I bought was the "Sons of Beaches" and that is a gem to listen to. They were fantastic to watch live, saw them at Selinas Coogee Sydney NSW $6 in 1986. Mind you, Mr Reyne has produced amazing music after Crawl, especially with Mr Hussey.

    Unpublished Critics released 1981 - Sweet Child o Mine released 1987. I had never noticed the similarity between the two songs but it's pretty obvious.
    Not much 'sueing' went on back then. Anyone over the age of 40 knows how artists were used & chewed up by record companies and Managers to get rich. The most poignant song of this Century about this fact is SpiderBait's "Buy Me a Pony". Another Seminal Aussie Band. Go Kram! You Rock!

    How could Guns 'n' Roses not be inspired by this song? This song addresses so many issues, from having a death wish to being called stupid by a singer that's a jerk because he gets a lot of work; as well as references to British music rags and audio equipment. Come on, Australian Crawl were a musical William Burroughs's of the 1980's! I grew up on Aussie Crawl and still enjoy their back catalog. The idea of Aussie Crawl being ex-upper middle class private schoolboy brats presenting themselves as a New Wave Beach Boys with aspirations of being Australia's surf rock version of The Eagles makes an interesting marketing ploy. Some of their songs were disgusting (Boys Light Up) and others were soul stirring (Reckless).. however, a great piece of 80's Australiana; not always the best live band but suitable for the period.

    oh that song GnR ripped to make SCOM

  • @finnhagan7664
    @finnhagan7664 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    First of all this song is basically just the same chord progressions as Sweet Child o Mine. And GnR didn't plagiarise it as izzy only came up with sweet child's chords after hearing slash's riff. It's just a coincidence

    • @jacobspoor2508
      @jacobspoor2508 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know. It could be coincidence but the melody is similar. Either way bands borrow from other bands all the time. To be honest they probably heard this song at one point while in Australia, forgot about it and accidentally stole the melody.

      Nifonte Wrong!
      SCOM came out seven-years AFTER Unpublished Critics.
      If one band 'borrowed' elements, it was definitely G N R.

      One of the clearest plagiatry cases ever :)
      The 3 chord riff when it starts doesn´t say anything yet, but then the totally similar slide guitar arrangement kicks in...
      the lyrics phrasing rhythm is similar enough, but even on top of that the chorus begins with an Aah, instead of the Ooh in the Guns´n´Roses version. Embarrassing.
      On that note my preference is the GnR version with better guitarwork,drums&bass, production, lyrics...

    • @joeguitar75
      @joeguitar75 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      trollslandan If anyone in that band REALLY thought SCOM was a ripoff of that song they would have sued GNR 25 years ago...
      Man it's D - C - G ... a million Country songs had that chord progression before... So it's the same harmonies but the main melodies could not be more different from each other

    • @trollslandan
      @trollslandan 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe Guitar If you check out statistics on how often someone gets a sentence for plagiatry and how often it just ends up with a lot of costs for the pursuer - then you´ll understand why.

    guns roses recorded that in late 86 ...way before the internet .Far as I can tell , Australian crawl meant nothing in America ....and guns'roses were probably not even aware of the band ....it is a pretty stock progression ....though it seems startlingly the same at odd times ....guns were big fans of the Tatts ...and the Angels ...so who knows ? Maybe that prompted them to investigate other aussie acts ? I have always felt that the opening riff was more a take on "am I ever gonna " ....but more inspired than ripped off ....Who really knows ? Not likely is my verdict though .

    • @MR2171
