I have this exact model and I am right with you on your opinions , I really thing the MAIN and probably the only reason to own this guitar is the alternate tunings! The models..for me range from decent to unusable. I would say some of the "Reso" oddball models like the Coral Sitar and the banjo are cool especially if you want to impress the audience but most models are not that good at all. Except as you say for the Les Paul and maybe the Special settings models,Its the tunings! Question: which Revision of the Flash memory are you using the latest 2.23 to me does not sound that good? I am thinking of reverting to an earlier version. Thanks.
Definitely enjoyed this demo, mooseboy. Your reactions to the single-coil vs humbucker emulations are understandable. There’s never really accounting for taste, but that’s true of the real article too. The advertising for the other current Variax guitar boasts that the user can create their own custom tones with the software (including body type and pickup configuration)and upload them to the guitar. Can the same be done here? Look at the hoochie woochie Tele mandolin!
Hey, thanks for watching, stw! And yes, there is software for creating some great custom tones. I'll delved into it just enough to match up the output levels from the different models. I also put some custom tones as my default "go-tos" (sitar and Ricky 12) so that I wouldn't have to search around any in the heat of performance.
How do the models respond to palm muting? I have an older 600 Variax that was almost perfect except for that aspect. When I switched to drop D or lower I found I couldn't get the true metal crunch I was after.
Thank you sir for including the magnetic pickups in this video. It's missing in all other videos
On its own as a Les Paul with no electronics it sounds great
Wow those humbuckers sound
good.
Nice playing sir..! Great demo too..! 👍
Great Demo, Doug.
Great Demo Mooseboy .
Thanks Dennis!
I'm surprised you didn't cover any of the acoustic models. For me that's the real beauty of the Variax.

Ron, it seems to react pretty well to palm muting- to the point where I don't even think about it. Thanks for watching!
