I’m 23 and have save thousands of dollars by doing the work myself!! This car is not hard at all to work on if you can tinker! So many diys out there to guide you. I now work on other n54s so people arent getting raped by the dealer!
Do it and save the money! In my particular case I don't have a good place to work on the car and my time is better used elsewhere so I just support a local shop to get it done.
Lol. I did the work myself a few times (oil cooler gasket $35 , oil housing gasket $26, and valve cover gasket $160, and cost of oil, coolant and I was done. Labor .. free. I have videos up on TH-cam showing how easy it is to do step by step, as well as many other people.
The 2nd mechanic is spot on. When oil from the oil filter housing gasket leaks it travels down the side of the block and to the bottom of the pan making it look like you need a valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket. I've owned a BMW since the E46 era and also own a lovely 2013 335is sitting on 77k miles. I'll tell you this, especially if you are a first time buyer or just getting into the BMW world. The forums and TH-cam DIY videos are a god send. I've saved thousands wrenching on my own from DIY videos and asking questions on the forums (Oil filter housing gasket, suspension, bushings, water pump, thermostat, brakes and rotors, even mods like down pipes, intercooler, inlets). Having the right tools and some patience pays off with these cars.
I have owned a BMW before and I don’t ever recall getting outlandish bills like this even at the dealership. I’m in the market again for a 335 with the six in line so I’m glad I found your video on your experience.
I've got a 2007 335i Convertible (N54) and my repair bill is hovering around $7,000 right not too - but that includes everything on your list PLUS complete turbo replacement, valve cover replacement, walnut blasting, new plugs, hard-top repair, sway bar links, thrust arm bushings, new charge pipe, and new air filters! Having a good shop definitely makes a difference.
That's one of those deals where when you take it in to have repairs done, they just don't have time to do it or don't want to do it. So they price it knowing you're going to back out.
I kinda felt like that was the case. We had gone there for ages and never had a estimate come back like this. Even on B5 Audis that take a ton of hours just to pull the front end of the car off for some of the maintenance.
I can replace all three gaskets (valve cover, oil housing and oil pan) for $1,300 if you take the car to my house. I actually did one few weeks ago replacing all three gaskets. It was AWD so it took longer than your 335IS because no front CV axles and differential.
The $5-7k includes the cost to replace the rear tires, replace the windshield, to repair the oil mixing with the coolant and all your oil leaks !!! Duh ! Did you not hear what you said in the beginning 🤦♂️
If that had been the case, this video wouldn't be a thing. When I was talking to the service advisor, she was specifically talking about the oil filter housing gasket, oil pan gasket, and valve cover gasket when she spouted out that price. The buyer and I had already advised them that we didn’t need pricing for the other items on the PPI. It was later found that neither the oil pan gasket or valve cover gasket had leaked. The oil filter housing gasket, coolant hoses, and belt were replaced, taking care of the oil in coolant problem. In the end, total repairs only came to $910.
You know the bottom line is to always get a second opinion. The new owner of the car was very happy with it and to my knowledge has not had any issues with it. Thank you for supporting my channel!
I just picked one of these up. The dealer in Silver Spring MD was charging $3324 for those same oil leaks. I plan to go to an independent shop if these need to be done
It’s not a terrible car to diy but everything needs to be fixed. Radiator use aftermarket hoses and billet charge pipes, upgrade hpfp maintain injectors coils plugs. Those gaskets need to be changed often.
Even apr $1300 is excessive. The valve cover seal, oil housing gasket and the oil cooler gasket cost about $100. And I did this repair by myself and it took me 5 hours of labor. That's pretty long because I'm a BMW fanatic but no mechanic. The oil pan gasket starts leaking (N54 and N55)between 90k- 120k mls, depending on which climate your living in. Dutch regards, Nico.
Those 3 oil leaks are very common on the n54/n55 and likely are the biggest part of the estimate. You can do them yourself just buying the gaskets for less than $200 assuming you have the tools and you are a hands on guy but seems unlikely the way you talk about it.
I used to do most of the repairs on my cars when I was younger but at this stage in life my time is more valuable to me than the cost of repairs. Hopefully I can get back to working on my own cars again.
To me oil in the coolant is the most expensive item, and without actually finding the cause of that during a PPI (which you cannot) the shop was probably covering a range of possibilities. It could be caused from a turbo or head gasket which may require removal of the engine. So I wouldn’t have gotten too bent out of shape about it. In the end both parties got a fair shake so I suppose the PPI did it’s job.
Oil can get into coolant and vice versa if the oil filter housing gasket not sealed properly because both oil and coolant passages are located next to each other and sealed by the same gasket.
Sounds like the service advisor shot from the hip without actually getting prices. Looks like it dropped from 5000 - 7000 down to 3600 the next day after they actually did an estimate. $3600 isn't cheap, but its not 5-7k. Looks like the advisor did a disservice to the company. Also, the most expensive service out of those 3 is the oil pan. You have to lower the engine cradle so it's not a quick job. So if you don't have to replace the pan gasket, that will save a chunk of change. That being said, sounds like German Precision gave you a much easier pill to swallow with their estimate.
The car has not since been sold and it turns out after German Precision looked at the car it only needed the oil filter housing gasket replace. He could not find any evidence of a oil pan or valve cover gasket leak. I suspect the same, the service advisor jumped the gun, shot from the him and just threw out a random number. Which to me was just bad business on her part. When all was said and done the total repair ended up being $910 because there some hoses and a belt that was recommended at the same time as the oil filter housing gasket. The buyer got a sell sorted 335is and I was able to move on and purchase my first M car. So happy ending for us all. Welcome to the channel!
3,600.00 dollars you can fix all that your self for about $400.00 labor and materials. I did it and then sold the car with no problems and I'm not a mechanic And I'm contractor and still own 2 more BMW x5M and x6M without any problems
I considered doing it myself but really just wanted to move on from the car. It ended up costing me about $900 from another shop and then I followed through with the sale of the car. I purchased a M4 after this and then ultimately ended up with a Ford Raptor because it better suited my professional and recreational lifestyle for now.
My dct oil pan was replaced at 55 k miles. Ofhg at 60, now it’s time for the vcg. My car is listed on cars.com atm if anyone is interested. Louisville Ky

I know this is a 4 years old video, but I have a similar situation, my car a 2011 335is with 79k on it, was leaking oil very minimal like you said 1 or 2 drops per week but really bothers me a lot, so I took the car to the stealership and they told me to replace just the oil pan gasket was a cool $3,000 dollars, I was like whaaaat? so I went to a gas station and the gas station charges $2,000 dollars to replace the oil pan gasket, I was like f*&k that, went to eBay and ordered the gasket and new screws for 80 dollars, did the work myself took me 2 day, to find out the car oil pan was fine, the leak was coming from the oil housing, went to the dealer and ordered the oil housing gasket for almost $100, also did it myself and the leak was gone for ever, by the way replacing the oil housing gasket (2) take like maybe 2 hours and was very easy there is tons of DIY video for BMW's
oil in your coolant takes a lot more than just some gaskets to repair. ofhg can cause severe engine damage very easily. the oil pan gasket alone in labor is over a thousand dollars. 5k seems about right to get it in tip top shape. if u wanna just fix those issues and not address the other issues they caused yeah maybe 3k in labor.
It was later found that the oil pan gasket or valve cover gasket had not failed. The oil filter housing gasket was replaced, coolant system flushed, replaced hoses and belt all in for $910.
@@GavinMalm good to hear! I've had all of those issues on mine and did it myself besides the oil pan gasket because mine was an Xi and to do the oil pan gasket its almost easier to remove the engine.. but yeah glad you got a second opinion!

7 grand for replacing a couple of gaskets? wtf? 3500 is Still robbing you blind bro... that work shouldnt be more than 500-700 bucks and a third of that of you want to turn the wrenches urself....I Always do all my own repairs, been doing it since i was 16 and still doing it at 61...I see this kind of dishonesty all the time in service departments... I'll be picking up parts at the parts counter and listen to the service desk give people quotes or the work done, the hrs charged and parts replaced as people come in like innocent sheep and ask what the bill is.. its sad..there ARE honest shops but there are many dishonest ones that will take u for a ride..they Gauge you when you come in..if you Know ur shit, they will be strait up with you becuz they know that You Know and that u will call their shit..However ,if ur a woman, an old lady, a dude with nice clean hands who looks like youve never turned a wrench and talks the same, well they'll tell you they gotta replace ur "muffler bearings" or some other wild nonsense or charge you crazy time hrs for short work.
There are certainly shops out there willing to rob people. Im glad I found a great shop in town to service my families BMW and Mercedes cars in the future!
He's been a BMW master mechanic for 17 years. Either way, its all been sorted out and I sold the car. Thanks for stopping by and contributing to the conversation.
I have one it’s a total pos. I blew my engine never owned more than 12 hours. Never did a pull or wot. Just went to take my dad home and broke down on my way home from the dealer.
Yeah, I was pretty upset about it. I managed to save the deal but now I'm just starting to wonder if I should just keep the car and build it out. It's going to be in top condition after the repairs.
I see both sides of the coin. These gaskets would only cost 50 each. Maybe 400 for the valve cover and the gasket together which is a better option then just doing the gasket. But the oil pan requires the sun frame to be dropped. That means the engine needs to be supported from above. It’s not a quick or easy job. Most of what you’d be charge for is the labor. The oil house isn’t bad at all. The valve cover can be a pain and should be done with a new valve cover along with gaskets. So let’s say 100 for both the oil pan gasket and the housing gasket. The valve cover can be 400 to 600 for everything needed. Now add the labor and it takes a while to do. Yes 7k is high but understandable. It’s a bmw not a Honda. Your car is very nice and these cars shouldn’t be in the hands of people who don’t like working on their own car.
All great points here. It all worked out in the end. I have enjoyed working on my cars in the past but over the last few years I just don't have the time to do it.

Dude has been “fixing N54’s for years” and has never seen one needing the oil pan gasket at 71k miles? Lmao. Also, oil in the coolant? That’s sketchy
He's been a BMW master mechanic for 17 years. Either way, its all been sorted out and I sold the car. Thanks for stopping by and contributing to the conversation.
Haha laced with gold for that price it better be
Right!? I was blown away!
I have one it’s a total pos. I blew my engine never owned more than 12 hours. Never did a pull or wot. Just went to take my dad home and broke down on my way home from the dealer.
didn’t even make it the the bmw dealer to get it checked
My oil pan gasket blew out when my engine blew up. Too much gas in the oil. Leaky injector it was a huge explosion
Bruh that’s easy to fix
Glad I moved on from the car.
they cost you the sale of a car! wtf
Yeah, I was pretty upset about it. I managed to save the deal but now I'm just starting to wonder if I should just keep the car and build it out. It's going to be in top condition after the repairs.
When broke people buy a BMW
Yeah bro. My bank account is dead.
u sound whiny-- do your own repairs then
I bought a M4 instead. Thanks for stopping by!
Lol. "Ugh, my car needs repairs, no worries I'll just get another"
I see both sides of the coin.
