I have the opposite problem, over all my tanks the fish love it so much they eat every last piece. I've had to get tubs just to produce more duckweed. I have found that the fish don't like eating azolla much so that ends up taking over, my goldfish and apple-snails do eat it eventually though.

No love for Azolla? Tiniest fern, just as prolific as duckweed.

    • @erikjohnson9223
      @erikjohnson9223 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

It (or rather then blue-green algae it hosts) is a nitrogen-fixer. This makes it potentially more prolific, but much less useful for water treatment (where we try to remove nitrogen compounds from the water in order to reduce the likelihood of downstream algal blooms and resultant dead zones). Since most cyanobacteria produce cyanotoxins such as the nonprotein amino acid BMAA, azolla is quite suspect as food or forage. However it is good fertilizer for rice and other emergent aquatic crops (if the BMAA isn't taken up directly by plants?--I did see one paper where castor bean took up proline from soil that supposedly had been kept free from all microorganisms, which is troubling because BMAA isn't that different in molecular weight).

😉👍 Yeah, and most people don't realize that duck weed is where ducks got their name! Here's how it happened: Two scientists(birdologists) were walking along the banks of a lake one day while trying to figure out what name to give to the aquatic birds all around them.
Suddenly, one of the scientists caught a glimpse of a few birds eating duck weed. It was at that moment when they decided to start calling them "ducks", after the food they were eating!
👉 Disclaimer: ^It's a joke(for those few folks who assumed otherwise).

And to think aquascapers and aquarists can’t stand the stuff. I'm surprised it absorbs oxygen rather than giving oxygen

All plants absorb oxygen when not photosynthesizing. Duckweed does produce oxygen during the day (like other green, non-CAM plants). Perhaps a solid covering of the stuff would add oxygen to the atmosphere yet inhibit it's diffusion into the water below. That has to be studied. I don't know that leaf tissue is a greater barrier than water itself. However what solid coverage *will* do is to shade out the algae and submerged aquatic plants below, starving them of light and thereby blocking their ability to generate oxygen (which would have been released directly into the water) and likely killing them

I was once playing mini-golf at a rundown family fun center, and there was a group of kids running around and interrupting people's games. The water on the course hadn't been properly cleaned, leading to a thick layer of duck grass forming. The obnoxious kids didn't realize this and were running towards to me when they stepped on the duck grass and were covered in the stinking water.

The most weird thing about this plant is that it may be one of the few immortal plants that will reproduce over and over again.
Most species often have brief life spans because of their fast maturity, but few species can acted like the immortal jellyfish.
By becoming cysts during droughts and nutrient deficiency, they can reawaken once the conditions are favorable.
Because sometimes every time a single duckweed flower reproduces asexually like single celled organisms, if can divide and multiply half it’s life span, by simply cloning, the least functional daughters will die off, while the most functional offspring live on and repeat the cycle.
And yes they can become invasive pests and these plants can crave huge amounts of carbon dioxide and nitrogen from the atmosphere and the water itself and therefore release the oxygen and certain sugars as a waste.
Note to self that they are important for understanding water quality.
Some species are sensitive to pollution, while others are not.
And pollution resistant species can even absorb those pollutants for their own defense mechanism against predators and parasites, by making them selves toxic.
Too much of those pollutant thriving duckweed means that the lakes and rivers are in trouble.

Yay I’m early to a video, can alligators actually see anything that’s standing behind them 🤔 their eyes are on the top of their head so I’ve always wondered if they can look backwards or not
