Avi's part in this speaks to his operatic training in college (he was offered a position with the Los Angeles Opera when he was approached by Scott & Ben to join PTX for The Sing Off, and he chose to go that route).

I was just off to bed (12:35am here in England) and I saw your video had just posted, so I had to watch it. Thank you! I love this. It's so clever. And yes, whoever created this video thoroughly deserved that Grammy win. Avi (so handsome!) really shines in this one but even though I'm a big fan of his, I have to say that Scott's work in holding the centre of this piece is superb. The arrangement is amazing. Not only did they get a Grammy for the arrangement, the fact that they made it into an all vocal arrangement using only 5 voices impressed the Grammy committee so much they changed the category requirements just so PTX could be considered!! The category before was just "instrumental" but they changed it to "instrumental or a cappella". So PTX actually made Grammy history twice that year & now other a cappella groups can be considered if they do something similar.

I noticed how you squared up and braced for impact. You have clearly been through the Daft Punk medley and understand how quickly they can strike. Excellent preparedness training.
PTX videos require 100% focus, and even then you'll never get it all in the first go. Reactors who chat through the video or close their eyes while listening irritate me no end. I keep shouting at the screen, "You just missed that great part!" or "Pay attention! There's something brilliant happening just here!" You never know when PTX will slide in some creative twist or surprise that elevates the whole arrangement. 🙂

I can not BELIEVE I am going to say this, but VoicePlay's "In the Hall of the Mountain King" is even better. Well... ok ok.... it's like comparing a filet mignon to a lobster tail. They're both amazing. But please check it out. It will blow you away. As a huge raving Pentaholic, I feel absolutely giddy that VoicePlay is ALSO knocking my socks off.

To see what can happen when they are all together to film these try the Gangnam Style bloopers 🙂 Avi brought it to the band and it was their 2nd Grammy for arrangement instrumental or acapella. The first was for their Daftpunk medley.

As for the video, it always makes me think the reason they keep changing direction of where they're looking isn't just to be visually interesting in the video but like they are pretending to be in an audience watching the ballet.

I love this video I do get exhausted watching it must have been draining on them. It's perfect.

Grammy was for the arrangement not the performance...their 3rd one was a performance Grammy for Jolene with Dolly herself!
