This is one of the BEST fight scenes I've ever seen. You can tell they're masters of martial arts & they're really fighting because the camera doesn't add any extra/unnecessary effects other than some sound effects & at most 3CGIs. The fighting techniques are clearly displayed & the camera angle stays consistent & clear. Whereas in other movies' you see tons of CGI, mess up/constantly switching camera angles to cover mistakes and objects (such as columns or shelves) blocking the fighters.
It's not bad. But not very realistic to the sharpness of a blade. You don't block a knife with your hand like Donnie did. That thing is done for. Especially against that type of slash. I'll admit. I've seen this scene a million times. I use some of blondies moves in real life now. But growing into a master myself, I can asssure you, Donnie shoulda recieved a good bit more damage than they show here.
This and the kitchen fight in Raid 2 are probably the best choreographed fights I’ve ever seen imo. There’s a great interview on YT on Hong Kong TV with these two about how the knife was blunt and it was a competition between them to see who could legitimately hit the other first with zero choreography and it was so convincing many shots were kept for the movie because these two were just that good.
The blood and violence contrasted with the neon lighting and soft singing is just beautiful. It's a bloody, violent piece of art that is just fantastic. The motions are so smooth and believeable and the intensity of Donnie and WuJing draws you in totally and completely. This is one of the best fight scenes put to film in at least the last 7 years.
One thing I love about this fight scene is the degree of honor they show. Ma Kwan could have knocked out Jack with a single gunshot as soon as he walked into the alley, but he faced him in hand-to-hand. Even though he hates Jack, and you can see that when he slices him open, you can tell that they're fighting out of honor, not necessity. The bext part of it is how this whole concept of honor is present in the fight, but implied in their gestures and movements. Very subtle, very poetic.
These kind's of scene's like this has one of most best fight scenes I've ever ever seen in my entire life. They really do alot of martial arts & really needed their fight skills with other effects.
Actually I saw an interview with the film's director. He stated that this scene was not choreographed, but was improvised by the actors. That's some awesome shit right there.
I watched this again late last night. It's one of my favourite knife scenes since 2005. Enjoy Jing Wu as an actor and highly developed fighting technique's/style, which I always find engaging. My personal (appreciation) however will 'all ways' fall toward Donnie Yen. Long history in acting and spectacular fighting technique's. Highly developed spear/staff skill, my personal favourite. Much love to the arts!
Part of the reason I absolutely love this fight, is I used to fence, and this plays out ALOT like a hyper intense bout. They test, back off, play mind games, and on top of all that, it feels real. Most noteably from 2:10 on
The best 1 on 1 fight scene in the history of film making, the camera angle catches every move. 2:10--2:35 looks so real I almost forgot it was a movie.
donnie has the power and speed. i like the fighting scene, well arranged and composed. i foresee donnie should go for international exposures, more fighting contacts with western martial experts.
Donnie Yen is becoming more and more popular among both Chinese and Worldwide audiences. But I honestly think WuJing deserves a lot more recognition than he currently has. Although he allows himself to take roles where he dies, he REALLY gets into character...I recommend the following films: Shaolin, Legendary Assassin, and Invisible Target.
This is by far in my humble opinion the best 1 vs 1 fight scene while two weapons were being used in combat in all of martial arts history cinematography, it resembles very closely how a real fight with weapons would go down. starting from the showdown from the walk to a the particular strut and style of each character, and the clothes they are wearing, the bad guy already waiting for him in the ally... Common to the bag toss going into a slight slow mo, I do plenty of fighting in real life MMA don't know why but sometimes as you recollect in your minds things slow down like that... And at the end that DEATH shot when the Wu Jing slumps over and dies, man you couldn't have found a better guy to portray a bad guy that guy nailed, the spray onto the wall, and the sickest shit ever when Donnie tosses his bad ass leather Jacket, like it ain't no thing but a chicken wing priceless..
man I've done that myself a couple of times, watch (the raid redemption) some of the fight scenes were a little too drawn out but great action none the less.
Brothers, i got a fight with school bully at my high school today, i broke his ribcage by one uppercut and 1straight punch to the jaw knock him down to ground, i also got broken nose and big red eyelid :) Truth, stressful morning
it is choreographed, but there's a catch. it's improvised until the point where the script requires the bad guy to be beaten. if you observe the "not donnie"'s movements, theres a very very slight nod before he eats the stick and eventually the blade. this is around 2:28 mark. thats when the planned part begins.
imstill notusingmyname the part where they were making short interactions with the many breaks was real however. its a bit obvious as to why they couold make it real but that part wasnt choreograühed at all so you both are right
Real and unreal mixed so well together. Martial art movies should do this way instead of fancy moves that leave you open for the enemy to attack. Doing fight scene like this create an intense feeling for the watcher, like "wow that was close!" or "watch the knife! It's so quick!"
I try to imagine, this fight scene only, How many times it was worked out, with the Director, and Coreographer, too good, very well done, and also things a little impossible to do, Great actors after all from a Brazilian Fan........
Idk what it is but its something about Donnie Yen when it comes to him using weapons. Its just sexy to me of how he uses them....but its just me, idk bout you guys lol.
@ExragonXFX It's on freddiew2 's channel in behind the scenes of "Whose gun is it anyways" ...I'm really glad FreddieW is bringing attention to the HK style of action even though everyone knows him for VFX
This is a special choreograph. Choreographs are obviously fake but Donnie wanted to make a fight scene that is practically real. Of course there are some fake parts like the stabbing at the end but the main fight is made as real as possible, to the point Wu Jing(the guy in white) was shocked when the plans for this fight were given to him by Donnie to review.
Can't wait to see SPL 2 with Tony Jaa in it. I hope Wu Jing can play the good guy for once, dude is too good to get killed in most of the movies he does
It could be the best fight scene compare to most Weapons fight scene in movies. Well done with incredible speed compare to most who sucks at using weapons like these. This looks as real as it is.
If you can find a interview of this movie, you would know they were really fighting rather than acting. And Donnie Yan broke multiple weapons in order to fought again Wu Jing.
LJ Wang They improvised in a couple of shots. That aside, it's all choreographed. You can tell because the way they telegraph their movements are timed and precise. That's not how real fights go down. And their weapons were actually convincing-looking props.
LJ Wang Yes and I was impressed. It was a bit scary to watch lol, cuz I believe I noticed the precise moment, it went from acting to real! Scary but thrilling.
@SonyHC3 In lethal weapon 4 and enter the dragon etc jet li and bruce were told to actually to slow down due to their incredible speed which means that they were not using their 'real speed' for these movies. The way of the dragon was filmed at 24fps (no camera tricks) and was much faster than enter the dragon. Why? Because these slowed down films were made to fit western audiences.
awesome this is the best, most intense baton and knife fight u'll ever see, wish thr is a behind the scenes for this scene i rly wanna see how they make.. haha donnie yen rocks i like the way he pose at 2:01
@DooKNo1 In Fearless, the scene before the final fight scenes was the one that really jumped out in my mind. If that scene was shot with live sound, then why did Jet Li's dialogue not match his mouth movement? Same thing with SPL. Sure, the actors did the dialogues themselves, but they recorded them in the studio after the scenes were actually filmed.

the name of the song is SPL Store the sun. The song is not in itunes but you can get it on soundcloud. Just type Sha po lang and the song should pop up.
I like how blonde hair guy always starts losing everytime he switches out of reverse grip :/ he loses all that speed then switches back to reverse grip... rinse and repeat
@SonyHC3 The reason why Kiss of the Dragon and Unleashed were great was because of the agreement of french directors to let jet and yuen woo ping to do what they wanted, which jet signed a contract after the flop of Romeo Must die. Both unleashed and kiss of the dragon were of a low budget, filmed in europe, without cgi bs but delivered in realistic choreography by yuen woo ping and corey. Compare that with the Mummy 3 or the One and its 10x better than his cgi american movies.
@SonyHC3 Hollywood is home of acting and special effects fake action whereas asia is the home of fight scenes and raw action movies. So many hollywood action movies are influenced by John woo movies eg face off, Max payne, Resident Evil, Mission impossible, matrix etc. As for fight scenes, the jc stunt team, corey yuen, yuen woo ping is all over hollywood choreographing fights for westerners.
@SonyHC3 No, when jackie, donnie or jet goes to Hollywood, 90% of the time, they will fail because hollywood never makes the best of them eg jet li's War was trash when there was huge opportunity for a decent fight against jason stratham but the director told corey yuen (choreographer) not to use ANY ma and cut the fight to like 1min leaving audiences completely disappointed.
LJ Wang they're both equal if you ask me, they both trained together a lot, and know each others style inside out, hence why they are even able to make this fight happen, Donnie always brings new style into his films and it always tends to stand out among the others, the only thing stopped him from competing professionally was injury, bare in mind he started out as a stunt man...
LJ Wang Wu Jing's wushu (the exhibition sport) is based on forms and acrobatics which is worthless in real fights. Donnie comes from a similar background but the huge difference is that he went on training many practical MA styles in his early teens.
I know the director of this movie. In case you don't know, the first half of this fight is not designed, it's actually free style by the two actors, which is luckily filmed. The two actors claimed they did get irrational when filming this fight scene and got real for a second.
@SonyHC3 SPL is a martial Arts flick!!! So please get that right! It's showcasing martial arts thats why the fight scenes are long. It is designed for ppl who like to watch formulaed fights. It may not be of your taste, thats why you can't seem to enjoy it and find it cheesy.
odd weapon choices but very well done nonetheless and yet very satisfying ending, i love how he stabbed the dude and ran the knife across his stomach..good stuff
I like Donnie and Jacky they both are great martial artist.... and have some great movies out there....I love watching them in movies wether they are playing the good or bad guys.
The music - AWESOME
The choreography - AWESOME
The camerawork - AWESOME
This fight scene - PRICELESS
👍👍👍👍👌

After all these years, I still think this movie was Donnie Yen's finest hour. And one of Wu Jing's best fight and death scenes as well.
One of the best choreographed knife fights of all time.
Facts
red riser
Most of the fight wasn't choreographed. The entire fight was done in just one night, improvised
About all of it is improvising and reacting. You can hear Jing say Donnie is to fast for him to react to in the bts for this
This and the kitchen fight in Raid 2 are probably the best choreographed fights I’ve ever seen imo. who ever made the soundtrack in the beginning is a genius. Glad they used the same theme music for SPL 2. Brings back a lotta memories.
This was the best, and sexiest fight in the whole fucking movie. Very stylish, yet more grounded and realistic. Music was spot on too.

As a fellow fencer, I am happy to know exactly what you mean.
Eidlones
Yes!
That was when I believe it got real too! Very scary to watch lol, yet thrilling.
Probably because that part was actually improvised by the actors.
The parts after 2:10 are improvised (till the part where they go on to finish the scene) so it looks more real
The best 1 on 1 fight scene in the history of film making, the camera angle catches every move. 2:10--2:35 looks so real I almost forgot it was a movie.
Love that fancy move with the knife switching hands. How did they come up with this stuff. Awesome scene.
Love Donnie Yen's fight scenes. So intense. He knows what the audience wants. Want to see more of Jing Wu as well.
This is one of those fight scenes epic enough to give me goosebumps
what a good fight
One of the best
So happy to see this video has so many views. Great movie, great scene.

boy you know you love Sailor Jupiter from the heart.

LMFAOOOO
Wow😄
Watch the raid 2
See this is why this is one of the best fight scenes ever , the stances they take with each weapon is 100% accurate to real life
The music:wow
The fight:wow
The graphics:so good thats make my eyes screaming
I think this was Tiger Cage. Great film. All Donnie’s films are amazing. He’s a very skilled martial artist and great actor 🙏 👊
Soooo I now watch this on a regular basis. Most well spent 4 minutes my life has to offer.
man I've done that myself a couple of times, watch (the raid redemption) some of the fight scenes were a little too drawn out but great action none the less.
Ive seen this fight 9001 times and i still get pumped up every time i see it
Don't bring a knife to a stick fight.
LongLive TrueFreedom Don't tell that to a Kali guy. Lol!
Just bring a bigger longer knife.
Dont use icepick grip in a fight with baton expert, hammer grip a knife did better
bring a gun,
Brothers, i got a fight with school bully at my high school today, i broke his ribcage by one uppercut and 1straight punch to the jaw knock him down to ground, i also got broken nose and big red eyelid :) Truth, stressful morning
Awesome knife versus baton fight. Thanks.
to find out most of this stuff was improvised..proves how talented these guys are
At 2:32 Wu Jing gives a nodded signal to Donnie to "come in".
Donnie Yen is so bad ass, they had to make his character blind in Rogue One so he won't be too OP.
No, he actually was going to reject playing as that character, but when he did, he told the producers to make his character blind.
Probably because Bruce lee trained him lol
And he was still OP.
Emmet Crossan ?....no he didn’t.
Emmet Crossan Bruce Lee train Sammo Hung, the gengsters leader in this movie
何度見てもかっこいいよこの戦い!
Come on now, this has to be the best fight scene of all time.
That song alone is do epic
This is one of the best fight scenes of any martial arts movie made in the last 30 years.
This scene was not choreographed, it was filmed in one night and they both fed off their knowledge of each other's fighting styles.
it is choreographed, but there's a catch. it's improvised until the point where the script requires the bad guy to be beaten. if you observe the "not donnie"'s movements, theres a very very slight nod before he eats the stick and eventually the blade. this is around 2:28 mark. thats when the planned part begins.

chúng mày xạo lồn quá
Mỹ Trần Ditto.
one of the best fight scenes ive seen. btw what kind of baton was he using during this scene?
it's a telescopic baton. The police in China and Hong Kong use them.
Hollywood couldn't make this scene.
Real and unreal mixed so well together. Martial art movies should do this way instead of fancy moves that leave you open for the enemy to attack. Doing fight scene like this create an intense feeling for the watcher, like "wow that was close!" or "watch the knife! It's so quick!"
Son Phan yes, a small part of it is real fight. The director tried to make the fight more realistic, so he let them to go for real.
Its just sexy to me of how he uses them....but its just me, idk bout you guys lol.
this could be a tutorial of "how to use police baton"
Kurt Angle I fail to see why he needs to. People who beg for likes and subs are the most annoying.
"The asian way"
Knife fighters are always the sissiest, but this one has the best knife skills I have ever seen.Excellent choreography!
The music was AWESOME................just Mindblowing....Added to the thrill of the epic fight..
Hmm I know Donnie Yen is main character and stuff but... Man Wu Jing was a total bad ass.
wu jing was 3 times the national champion of spear & sword art, he can do better with a sword than a knife
@Kurt Angle Damn, fix your grammar.
Shame you can't get spears or bo staffs in street fights anymore...
what we have a same name :o
3:41 love the violins
AWESOME, by far one of my favourite fight sequences ever, always come back to it, great flick...love the short katana drop
@ExragonXFX It's on freddiew2 's channel in behind the scenes of "Whose gun is it anyways" ...I'm really glad FreddieW is bringing attention to the HK style of action even though everyone knows him for VFX
Damn, these guys got skills, even when it is choreographed.

er ba It wasn't actually choreographed funnily enough, it was improv.
Can't wait to see SPL 2 with Tony Jaa in it. I hope Wu Jing can play the good guy for once, dude is too good to get killed in most of the movies he does
at first i thought you were trolling, then i realised it's true. SPL2 will have Tony Jaa…holy sh*t!
Will wu jing SPL2?
ManUnited123 yes, with Tony Jaa.
Love the scene!
Bag keeps disappearing .
It could be the best fight scene compare to most Weapons fight scene in movies. Well done with incredible speed compare to most who sucks at using weapons like these. This looks as real as it is.
The best fight scene in the whole world of cinematic fight scene.
1:12 if you look at Donnie's left hand he gives Wu Jing the signal where to slash him
good eyes, because there's a bag of blood there :))
Phương Phiêu Diêu What number in the video? I didn't see it.
at 1:12 (1 minute and 12 second). :)
"sure i could use another alley, but i've committed to this one. integrity, donnie."
Cant believe its been 9 years now since it came out in 2005. Next year in 2015 will be the 10th Anniversary.
3:54.....look at the red tinge on the concrete. From the previous takes they've done of that scene! :D
i love uncut version and with bloody scene!awesome
My favourite fight scene, ever.. Donnie is so cool and Wu Jing looks evil.. awesome !!
LJ Wang
Yes and I was impressed.
It was a bit scary to watch lol, cuz I believe I noticed the precise moment, it went from acting to real! Scary but thrilling.
i love the soundtrack in the beginning, anyone knows the name
@SonyHC3 In lethal weapon 4 and enter the dragon etc jet li and bruce were told to actually to slow down due to their incredible speed which means that they were not using their 'real speed' for these movies. No words, no witty banter, just two guys trying to kill each other 👍
My favorite scene~
I wish I can use knife like that guy in white outfit lol~
Blue Nile that’s a funky idea...
Donnie's fighting are more intense then all other fighters in movie scene
this movie is call 殺破狼!!!!! I am hong kong chinese!!!!
Then Wu Jing later starred in 戰狼
awesome this is the best, most intense baton and knife fight u'll ever see, wish thr is a behind the scenes for this scene i rly wanna see how they make.. haha donnie yen rocks i like the way he pose at 2:01
better than most of the western action movies out there.
Donnie Yen was so nice, he didnt smiled back 😂🤣 as he killed him... then again that'd be weird so nice!
Would anyone like to talk about our lord and savior Donnie yen
2:34 Jing Wu's nods his head telling Donnie Yen to kick his ass in the fight
7 long years later: BRAH I SAW THAT SIGHT NOD!!!
I wonder how many times they did this scene to get it perfect? prob once coz its so awesome
this movie is very good is my opinion

@SonyHC3 No, when jackie, donnie or jet goes to Hollywood, 90% of the time, they will fail because hollywood never makes the best of them eg jet li's War was trash when there was huge opportunity for a decent fight against jason stratham but the director told corey yuen (choreographer) not to use ANY ma and cut the fight to like 1min leaving audiences completely disappointed.
Who is here because of cinefix.
In my opinion, Wu Jing is much better than Donnie Yan. Wu Jing is a professional rather than a action actor
Donnie is not just a movie actor also a martial arts and weapons expert all martial artist have to learn both techniques
Haha!
never goes well for the "white" guy does it he he
This fight was improvised?! I never knew that, amazing! :o
Love Man from Nowhere though SPL and Flashpoint are my 2 favorite martial arts movies of all time.
I know the director of this movie. In case you don't know, the first half of this fight is not designed, it's actually free style by the two actors, which is luckily filmed. The two actors claimed they did get irrational when filming this fight scene and got real for a second.

One of the best weapon fighting scene in cinematic history.
