We’re excited to share this new content series, something we’ve wanted to try out as a format for a while, given how we like to film with behind-the-scenes in mind. Episode 1 features Misha; a fierce talent and a pleasure to work with, this being the first of hopefully many shoots to come.
This production with Misha marks our most ambitious Feature + Stills + BTS capture to date (and not to be surpassed due to its inherent challenges). We wanted to do something special as a thank you to our lens sponsor DZOFILM ‪@DZOFILM‬.
They lent us this 3 lens set of Pictor Zooms (12-25, 20-55 & 50-125) for our feature film Autofiction (IG @autofictionfilm) and let us hold onto them for a review period. For this, we are so grateful!
No money was exchanged and all views are our own.
Primary coverage is on the (Nikon) RED Komodo-X filming in DCI 6K in R3D MQ, in 23.98 and 48fps. The lens used for the entire shoot is the DZOFILM Pictor Zoom 50 to 125mm T/2.8; purpose-built for S35 and it shows, this lens along with the full 3-lens suite (12 to 25, 20 to 55, and 50 to 125), just performs, no notes!
For Stills, we captured on the Pentax 645Z. This camera deserves a review all its own, perhaps sometime shortly. Its colors match very well with the Komodo-X and Z-Cam respectively and its detail in the shadows is extraordinary.
BTS angles were filmed on x2 Z-Cam E2-S6 cameras, one mounted with the beautiful ultrawide 12 to 25mm T/2.8 and the other, and main BTS camera, handheld and Focus Rat stabilized, mounted with the versatile 20 to 55mm T/2.8 zoom.
This was intended to test the range of the low-end on the Komodo-X and the Open Gate 6K S35 coverage on the Z-Cam E2-S6. The Pictors cover both sensors remarkably, with no vignetting and excellent corner-to-corner performance.
Color grades are quick and dirty, but a nuanced grade could very easily pull the RED Komodo-X and Z-Cam E2-S6 in the same gamut, though the RAW from the Komodo-X does have that extra color and bit depth that would be welcome additions to the Z-Cam (here’s hoping for future development of a 12-bit mode or CDNG).
Sections marked by camera, per look, where applicable.
