    Well Steve thanks for posting another great video. Due to you I bought a sketch book still too embarrassed but I painted a wc pencil postcard in the coffee shop, it was ok but people were kind so sketchbook next! I used Derwent aquatone and they were amazed the way my Pentel waterbrush activated it. Merry Christmas and seasons greetings to you and your family. Many thanks. Best Wishes Crawford

I love watching artist paint au plain air because I can no longer do it… I have a dog (he is almost five now) and he doesn’t like to stay still for more than three minutes. So I take pictures and then sketch them at home. Thank you for the inspiration.

    Thanks for all the great videos! I've been watching a lot of your beginner videos since i'm just starting to get into drawing and watercolors. I've been using the sakura koi and derwent waterbrush, And i love how portable they are. But i can't seem to control the amount of water being released, any tips? And do you think it would be better to practice with normal watercolor brushes or a waterbrush? Thanks! 😄

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The water flow is always present but you can blot it back to a dryer state for just a bit on paper towels. With practice the control becomes more comfortable. Squeezing of course gives you as much water as you want.

      +The Mind of Watercolor thanks for replying! I was actually thinking of just buying a few short handled red sable brushes, bec. I just couldn't get a good color from waterbrushes (or maybe it's just my lack of skills) but i'll try to practice more with waterbrushes.

    I am enjoying all of your videos. My husband too, actually. We find your dry, off-beat humor delightful. And we always look to see what Ole' Reese is doing in the background. heh heh.Getting down to it, though, I haven't seen many art vloggers show their work at the palette. I could learn volumes from seeing you work the colors on the palette and explain why you do this or that thing you do. You know what I mean? I have made color charts with water color pencils and understand the basics of mixing colors to get different colors. My eight pencil set produced 36 colors and there could have been many more. What I miss is seeing Bob Ross show us his palette work. He worked in oil though. different set of rules. Anyway, I'm officially rambling now. Just a suggestion. I have already learned so much from you. Thanks for all you do! The gnarly tree is beautiful! Love those washed out grays in the shiny, old wood. You captured it well. Reminds me of the vines and column painting in a way.

    Excellent work. Sharing your experience was inspiring and inviting.
    Funny thing....when I began painting in watercolor, somehow I thought painting en plein air was the only way to work, perhaps because I began painting during summers in Ireland and the classes were always outside on location. I did full finished paintings on 18x24 Arches blocks, quite detailed, in a couple of hours, and these are still some of my favorite paintings. Back in the States I wanted to take some workshops and classes, but became petrified when I realized I would have to paint from photographs! I just didn't think I could do it so I shied away from them. Gradually, I worked past my fears and dipped my toe in the water. Then I realized that I had a whole "visual language" I could bring to the static photograph because of all my intimacy with the natural world through painting outdoors. I could even "invent" scenes using my memories of all the places I had painted in Nature. I still prefer to work en plein air, but I can happily use photos too. Honestly, I cannot tell you how afraid I was of those first photographs! But all artists can also profit in so many ways from spending time outdoors eye to eye with Nature.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +TheEirenMist You are so right. Painting outdoors is always the best case scenario and most instructive. The more you do it the bigger your repertoire of nature will become. Photos are really less than ideal but sometimes necessary to paint things and places we cannot go to. Thanks!

    Such fun watching you work, Steve! The last bit was especially fascinating, when you were adding the sepia pen work -- just little touches here and there, first left branches, then some jots in the branches at the right, a few on the tree trunk, then back to the left branches, just here and there with no apparent logic or structure (as opposed to going top to bottom, or first all the trunk, then the branches). Clearly just playing it all by eye, until it seemed to say "done"! Thanks as always for sharing so much of what you do in watercolor.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Squeeze water through it or you can just dip it to rinse it out like a regular brush but usually on location you don't have that because it has its own water.

  • @eileengoldenberg270
    @eileengoldenberg270 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I read somewhere that not all tube watercolors can be used to fill a palette like the one you are using. That once they dry they do not activate as well as ones made in pans...opinion?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Eileen Goldenberg It really just depends on the brand. I haven't tried a lot of the pan brands but tube brands vary. Sennelier pans do rewet much easier but so does M. Graham (from a tube) both due to a honey formulation which keeps them moist and sticky. M. Graham makes an excellent pan refill. I'm guessing the bigger issue with travel pans colors would be making them sticky enough to avoid becoming brittle, breaking into pieces and falling out of the pan when jostling around in a gear bag. Rewetting any colors that have hardened just takes some pre treating with an eye dropper or spray bottle before painting.

    You make painting outdoor so fun & easy. I thought I would just stick to photo reference when starting out w/ watercolor, but you inspired me to go outdoor. . . to my backyard first. It's not the beautiful open woods like yours, but I have fruit trees. I love trees and greenery. Funny I never thought of painting from my backyard until you said you were going outside in your property. I thought I had to go out to a park or some place and lug things w/ me.
    Painting from live reference out in nature looked intimidating. Seems like there is too much to absorb in & capture and you are sitting out in the sun. But I'll take it easy and start w/ the yard, and small potted plants I can bring inside too.

    Very watercolour-y, the play of light and shadow on the trunk. Incidentally, "plein" actually means "full" (the same radix appears in English "plenary"). So "plein air" translates roughly as "fully exposed to the elements" (also, "en plein jour" means "in broad daylight").

      +William Tse Possibly at some point. Its a decent student grade set. The pan set is nice for location sketching due to its portability. I wouldn't be afraid of it.

    I was wondering about the point in doing this sketch? Truly interested in knowing is if you do this for practice and fun or instruction for us? I certainly enjoy it but seems like you couldn't sell such a sketch as it's small and in your personal sketchbook. Wouldn't the time spent doing this be better spent on a larger picture with the point of selling it? I guess I'm asking what is the point of doing these little sketches versus working in the studio on something to sell? Is it for practice?
    Thanks and love all your videos!!

    Hey thanks for the video! I like the idea of packing light. I think sometimes (at least me) take waaaay too much stuff out into the field to use and only end up using 3 or 4 tools anyway. I have recently gotten back into watercolors and your channel certainly helps in my journey. Thank you sir.

    dang it bug, stay off the Masters thumb!! You are AMAZING! I love your pieces. I have a strange request of you, however. A long time ago, I did something really odd, and was wondering if you can/will do it as well. I did a drawing ONLY looking at the item, not my paper..some really odd and amazing things occurred, can you do a demonstration, please?? Thank you, Marty :)

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rhonda Magee Hahaha! Funny. I'm still waiting for our first hard freeze. Its way over due here in SC and helps kill off some of those pesky bugs. You're referring to contour drawing. Sure I've done it before. Its not really all that odd. Its actually a classic art class exercise taught in many drawing classes. Improves hand eye coordination. There is nothing more complicated than what you described. Look at and concentrate only on your subject without looking at the paper or your hand. Sometimes drawing teachers will even hold a card over your hands to keep you from looking. As you said, it will produces some interesting results.

    • @rhondamagee7459
      @rhondamagee7459 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't realize anyone else had done this with the hand/eye projects. Dang it, thought that I was the only one that had done it. Hehe :( I still would like to see you do this. How's about it??
