I vividly remember that scheme and all its incredible (especially at the time) conversions. Actually, I remember flipping through the Space Wolves codex of the time and that it contributed immensely to my awe of 40k and the striking, high-contrast 'Eavy Metal paint job of the mid-late 90s. Thanks for the nostalgia trip!
Like the result, been looking at various space wolf painting videos and this really does look good, im starting a space wolf army (got the storm claw boxset, my son has pinched the orks, but got the space wolves left, so bought the horus heresy mk6 marines and a horus heresy tank, as theyre a homage to the old rogue trader plastic boxsets i had as a kid, so doing them as space wolves to go with the ones i have) so this has given some inspiration as to how to paint them.
that russ grey through the airbrush looks so much like the fang basecoat brushed on, super hyped as getting the fang basecoat in my country is the biggest mission, and i have a ton of russ grey on hand. wish me luck im going to be trying and airbrush for the first time following this!
This is an awesome video and such a cool result! So much so that it’s made me want to start painting Space Wolves!! My Salamanders are going to be pretty annoyed - thanks for the content!
really like that , looking so simple but wow really like this paint job, they looking great.. I'm always trying to complicate my painting but this opened my eyes ,great stuff
Even if they're not an army I'm working on there's always something to learn from your videos! Eventually I'll work up enough courage to use that cult of paint airbrush I got lol.
Great video! I am working on my first Space Wolf army and basically following this guide exactly! Question though, I got the Vallejo Poly. Gloss, and it seems a bit thick.. Can I use normal Airbrush thinner with the gloss varnish, or should I use something else to thing it? Water?
Thanks! It's from the space wolf primaris character that is now included in the new Combat Patrol box. Was previously in one of those big dual army boxes.
I've got a badger 105 arrow, a sotar 2020 and a H&S ultra with some infinity bits added and I still want to get the cult of paint infinity. I may have to admit I have a problem.
@@cultofpaint exactly. It's nice to be understood, every time I try to explain it to the wife I get blank looks or muttering under her breath. I've tried to compare it to shoes but still no progress
There isn't really a golden ratio. I'd suggest starting 50/50 and then adjust from there to where you are getting the desired effect in a couple coats.
After you airbrushed the shoulder colours, how did you paint in the grey trim? Did you mask the yellow and red, or brush paint in the trim? Thanks. Love the videos. I'm a new wolves painter and really like your tutorial.
Brush painted. Followed the same steps, just with a hairy brush. So basecoated Russ, then highlight fenrisian, then highlight fenrisian/ulthuan. If you do it the same time you are edge highlighting the rest of the model it isnt too bad.
I don't want to sound nit-picky because this is a beautiful model and far beyond anything I can do... but the decal you applied to the right shoulder is a Long Fangs symbol and this of course is a Blood Claw.
That's ok, these recipe videos are much more about how to create the colours, there's probably "accuracy" mistakes in most of them. Then people can go away and create as accurate representations of the fluff as they want. Or just paint something that looks cool to them.
Cult of Paint regarding the white you used as a highlight. The Tamiya white? Is that just a standard white and the thinner? Sorry not familiar with that range so looking for a good white for the air brush

You're welcome, good times!
Very nice. Best tutorial I’ve watched on space solve painting combining air brush and hand painting. Lovely.
Thanks!
Love the classic look. I remember that article too.
Such a great article

Be nice to mix in mk6 for the nostalgia nod

Fantastic video. And brought back some good memories with the army painted by Kim.
Would have loved to see it in real life.
Loved this, thanks dude
Enjoyable and informative - the helmet really makes the marine.
Thanks, and yeah it's a really nice helm.
Fantastic job! Making the Sons of Fenris proud!
Thanks very much :)
GW Skavenblight Dinge works really well for me when doing the paint chip effect
This is an awesome video and such a cool result! So much so that it’s made me want to start painting Space Wolves!! My Salamanders are going to be pretty annoyed - thanks for the content!
haha thanks. Definitely do some wolves.
Love the paintjob, really good retro Feeling 👌🏻
Thanks, that was the hope!
I am angry this looks so damn good.
really like that , looking so simple but wow really like this paint job, they looking great.. I'm always trying to complicate my painting but this opened my eyes ,great stuff
Thanks Rafal, we love some complicated painting but for getting an army done you got to keep it simple!
Nice use of the oil pin lining 😁
Thanks! 👍

Glad you're enjoying them! And also get that brush out! It's very user friendly.
Amazing paint job, love the style. Ever considered doing a Scythe of the Emperors?
Thanks! Love Scythes. Would definitely like to do some of the more obscure chapters.
Outstanding
Yes mate! This is fantastic love this style.
Cheers dude!
Great job! Are there any plans to tackle a Drukhari model at some point? I’d love to see the CoP take on them
Those would be great fun, still one of the best looking ranges from GW
For The ALLFATHER FOR RUSS! *Howls in feral*
Would love to see an army shot with all these individual models you've painted up for the different legions/chapters making up a single army
We'll definitely do a year one family photo!
Where did you get the head pelt from? Looks awesome
thanks, it's the alternate head from the leader in the Combat Patrol set
Where the pelt on the helmets from?!
Why do u apply varnish after the grey layers? English isnt my mother tongue so sometimes i dont get what u say in the videos.
Thx mate!
It makes the pin wash easier. ( wash flows into recesses better and is easier to remove mistakes)

As always great video would live to see you do some deathwatch!
We'll add them to the list!
Ace!! Thank you!
You're welcome!
As ever, superb
thanks!!!!
Another great vid again funny enough I just got Ragnor Blackmane today kutgw I'll follow this tutorial cheers 👍
Brilliant new model.
Love this dude, 5 mins in what did you use to cover the armour on the arm youd already painted, when you tackled the shoulder pad? - Steve
Its camo masking putty by Ammo by MiG
I've got a badger 105 arrow, a sotar 2020 and a H&S ultra with some infinity bits added and I still want to get the cult of paint infinity.
I may have to admit I have a problem.
The problem being you don't have the CoP Infinity yet right?
@@cultofpaint exactly. It's nice to be understood, every time I try to explain it to the wife I get blank looks or muttering under her breath. I've tried to compare it to shoes but still no progress
How much should you thin the paint down if you use the citadel air versions?
There isn't really a golden ratio. I'd suggest starting 50/50 and then adjust from there to where you are getting the desired effect in a couple coats.
Is that retributor armor or relictor gold?
What masking solution did you used for the shoulder arm is it just tape
@@Maxtorym just tape
i cannot wait to see world eaters :D
Definitely need some more chaos!
lol i still have all these old sets :) The new mini's are so much nicer. BUT still, i got the old metal ones and i like em hehe
Is the gloss varnish necessary when you're doing a pin wash?
Yes (from their other videos) the polyurethane gloss varnish reduces surface tension to enable the oil paint pin wash to flow as described.
What is the thinner for the Windsor newton paint? I can't quite make out the name. I've never used oils before but I wanna try pinwashing
Sansodor. Odourless artist grade mineral spirits.
Awesome work - I have some SW that have been undercoated with Russ Grey, what would you suggest to start airbrushing from there with?
Black. Redo the primer and paint them a different colour. Don't use the horrific space wolf grey colours.
Superbe fig gg nice j'adore hum ^^ ^^ !! !!
Thankyou!
I wanted your version of the infinity air brush.. But couldn't get it.. So I had to get the regular CR infinity plus! Sad times!
That is indeed sad times! But you still got a great brush.
Is the yellow dag on the red shoulder part of the decal you applied or did you paint that on? It just suddenly appeared when you jumped forward.
It's a decal. Yellow dag with the longfang symbol over the top.
@@cultofpaint Thanks!

What sort of masking putty are you using there?
Ammo by MiG camo masking putty

How many coats of varnish do you typically use before pin washing?
Approx 3. They are thinned 2-3 drop s of thinner to varnish.
With that varnish, can I ask what your dilution is for the brush please? Thanks in advance
approx 2:1 thinner to varnish. 20 psi. 0.4mm nozzle.
Cult of Paint regarding the white you used as a highlight. The Tamiya white? Is that just a standard white and the thinner? Sorry not familiar with that range so looking for a good white for the air brush
What a great looking model. How long did it take to complete?????
Always tricky to figure that out when filming. But a squad of these over a weekend is definitely doable.
Maybe not to my taste, but a lot of obvious talent.
Thanks James
90s Space Wolves are 40k to me
They are awesome
*looks at the airbrush* oh *puts paint brushes down* , I mean it still looks very cool ;-;
Thanks! You could still use the same recipe without an airbrush. ( the shoulder pads rims are hairy brush not airbrush, as are some of the highlights)
The light powder blue is horrorific and should never be repeated. The same as yellow included anywhere within the space wolves iconography.
