I started working for PECo in July of 1985 at Peach Bottom. I was unaware that Richmond had closed that year. It's surprising that they are allowed to leave it like this - that the state or city doesn't require them to restore it to green field. I laughed when you saw the Cardox test. Pretty much my entire career at PECO was in fire protection. I left PECo/Exelon in 2009. It was definitely not the same company. Times certainly have changed. Some things for the better, some things not...
Most of my friends are not down with this kind of thing. One of my buddies likes coming sometimes, but I got to say the thrill of going alone is pretty intense. Really gets your senses sharp
Awesome video dude! I'm an EET - just caught it looking for videos on fixing up my little generator. It's a fun hobby fixing generators as looking at this its like model railroading in a way on a miniature scale so one person can see the whole process. There's no way they're getting that place running again without rebuilding it - maybe when we have a new form of energy though the site will serve? "Is it really worth it? You tell me?" I like that. You only live once - and the most cruel way to die is not to live - just run out the clock and not do anything. To me everything is a calculated risk - if you trust it you might have to (as you may never get another chance) and you only get once chance to live. The beer bottles at the beginning are also a great theme to this video showing how much there is more to see out of life. As a kid, I loved exploring old buildings like this. I'd like it even more when they'd have raves there and always wondered why they would fence it off. "If you're not using and don't care about it - why do you care if I look at it? Do you really got to go to such effort just to keep us from having fun?" Today I see why - I might die and then they'd get in trouble (not their fault for me going there)

You can’t really tell the size of the turbines until you compare them to the staircase going to the bottom floor. Insane how much steel and concrete and engineering went into the building.

This beautiful building has been preserved, completely renovated and is now an office building. Nice landscaping and parking lot. Beautiful. So glad to see it reused.
I'm not usually bothered by heights but watching this had me very tense! And all that crumbly concrete and rusty walkways... I was scared it would give way at any moment. You have nerves of steel. Enjoyed the explore. Thanks.
Amazing to think how much effort it took to build all that, now, totally useless. Also, pretty legit exploring the place as you did, not just boat rescues but no fear of heights either!
Just watching you traverse those heights made me nervous. I used to explore some giant, old, closed down sugar mills in Hawaii, back about 10-12 years ago. Crawled around everything, but I stayed off the high catwalks. Those parts are not for me. They are torn down and gone now. I’m glad I got to explore them when I did. These old huge industrial complexes are so interesting to me.
They are preparing to decommission Martin Drake power plant in colorado springs . But they will not let it just decay and rust away . It will be converted for a period of time to gas then disassembled and recycled
I have hauled transformers out of Richmond station. I really enjoyed your video exploring this magnificent structure. You took it to whole new level sir. Climbing on the crane rail looked super sketchy. Thanks for doing a great job. Just imagine how nice it was when first built. Be careful on your next adventure!
Awesome video. I just did some exploring in one of Edison’s old plants. Fascinating how these cavernous spaces and machinery were operated. I wish I could have seen it while it was live and experience the sounds. I do a lot of photography in abandoned places but it’s cool to see it in video. Nice job!
This was a cool episode, I was imagining the same thing, the view some employees had looking down for the control room. Now that I’ve seen this I’m going to see if there are any video of when the place was running. Some of the places you walked my palms were sweating for you though.

I didn’t scroll through all of the comments but your one question about the net on the roof. It keeps birds and other flying animals out. Don’t want something nesting and/or disturbing something that could be catastrophic to the buildings integrity.

FYI @ 3:08 that section of the boiler is typically called the "penthouse" and that sloped floor your seeing is actually the roof of what is, the combustion firebox below and, is where the burners are located... Also, all of those offset tubes in the back are the leg extensions of super-heater element pendants that hang suspended inside the firebox below.
Yeah I tried to make the voice over sound okay but I didn't love the way it came out. I was actually going to cut it out all together but said screw it since I wasted so much time trying to make it sound okay. I'm definitely not an audio guy. I've learned that much
It's sad that the City Government has let it deteriorate to this condition. It could have been, or *could still be*, an Excellent Industrial Museum-Learning Center on Power Generation for children exploring Stationary Steam Engineering Careers. It really needs a roof to prevent further corrosion.
Even with a roof, it needs sealed windows and then also adequate HVAC, otherwise condensation and seasonal weather/humidity will still destroy it from the inside out.
@@furyfantoo Yes,, it does need internal controlled climate work but the City Council has failed to do what is right by trying to preserve this Historic Land Mark for future Generations. Perhaps their lack of interest is due to their personal Political Agendas ?

Haha yeah, it was cold that day too, my hands were frozen after climbing the ladders. and A big chunk of that ceiling might still knock you to the ground but you'd probably be okay. Sharp rusted wire rope inside of it might do a number though.

Id like to have a place like this if i had enough recourses to get it back in shape enough to work in or have events in or like to make a multi level garage. I see alot of abandon warehouses and factories near where i live and would love to restore them and make them into functional spaces again

its clear back then they took time to make the architecture esthetically pleasing even though it was industrial. those domed vaulted ceilings with arches etc etc. now it would be a giant ugly box of corrugated steel. even the greek revival exterior masonry is fantastic. they cared about what the community would see

I've passed this place while boating on the river. I wouldn't do this myself, but its pretty cool to see the inside.

I think you're thinking of either Chester or Delaware stations, this place is still sitting abandoned.
I did a nitrogen purge gas job job in that plant in 1995 shortly after the movie was produced. You are much too brave.

Well there are active utilities still surrounding the place so probably something with that. And no problem. Definitely a stunning place

Not sure what it's made of but I don't think it's asbestos. I read up that they completely removed all asbestos from that plant many years ago.
You might be right. I would just be shocked if they had left it when they did the asbestos remediation
