I know the intention of this song is to showcase the parallels between Adachi and the protagonist, but I just can’t help seeing the parallels between Adachi and Yosuke. While it is true that the protag was in the same situation as Adachi (ended up in a little village in the country against their preferences), the protag immediately diverted from Adachi by trying to make friends and seeing it as a new opportunity. However, it’s easy to forget that Yosuke was in the same situation, too. In fact, what stands out to me is his Shadow’s speech, where he talks about how boring Inaba is, and how excited he is about the murders, because it’s something interesting to do. This is really similar to Adachi’s motive for continuing the murders - it makes Inaba a fast-paced, tense, interesting place. When the gang encountered Adachi for the first time in the TV world and he was going on about this, I couldn’t help wondering if Yosuke was thinking “is this what I could’ve become without my friends?” Not quite sure why I bothered typing this all out, but enjoy my likely very poorly explained theory/bad psychoanalysis
the big difference between adachi and yosuke is adachi doesn't care whether he's playing villain or hero he only care about his 'game' meanwhile yosuke have 'hero' mindset in his mind so he much better parallel to namatame than adachi and also since both of their 'lover' died. meanwhile our protag doesn't have any special motive and can choose to go over adachi side (accomplice ending) or (true) good ending symbolize that like adachi, yuu can freely choose which side he played
if you didn't know if you accept the shadows as your real self and not to aknowledge it as part of you it actually mutate the body in some degree like what happend in the P1 enemy in the ice queen route or when takaya is being consumed by his shadow that his eyes turn partial yellow glow
My favorite part of Adachi's character is the fact that he truly is the opposite of Yu. Despite both of them coming from similar backgrounds and getting the exact same power, Yu's bonds kept him away from being evil, while Adachi's lack of bonds and antisocial nature brought him towards the path of evil.
In Episode 6, the way they portrayed Adachi killing Saki feels like a dark parallel to Yu when he is about to kill Namatame. When Nanako flashes from the back of his mind, Yu stops himself from killing Namatame. Adachi gets a phone call from Dojima, and Adachi doesn’t answer.
Adachi is a very interesting character and there aren’t many like him in fiction. The level of realism behind his character is astounding, he has symptoms of anti-social personality disorder because if you watch the anime he is shown to have a tendency to isolate himself from others and focus inwards for support. This is because his parents only cared if his grades were good or not so all he did was study even when people offered to hang out with him he always turned them down in the pursuit of success. Then when he was sent to inaba he thought his life was over but when he found out he could put people into tvs he found entertainment from watching people suffer. Though the only reason he started doing this is because he made an impulsive decision to put mrs. Yamino into the tv after she made him feel inadequate. He got to the point he is in the game only because he could never acknowledge the relationships with people. If you look at what happens after the game in p4 arena you see him following the rules of the world and carry out his prison sentence no matter how boring it is. After that he gets a way out and then manipulated/blackmailed by a person who has a very similar plan that he had in the og game. So what does he do after a full year of reflection? He uses the same logic the party used against him. “You’re acting like a child throwing a tantrum.” But that’s not where his arc ends, it ends when he finally acknowledges the relationships he built with yu nanako and dojima making him a character that challenges his inner demons after letting them control his life for so long. Remember people are not the sum of their symptoms but that doesn’t mean that they don’t need to change.
Not having played through the story of p4a, or p4u, actually, the two things that come to mind is the true ending route in p4g, and the p4ga - in the golden epilogue, regardless of what has come to be, Adachi gives Yu and the Seekers of Truth a lead - a creature or something that began the Inaba incidents. An answer. In the golden animation, Adachi straight up admits defeat when Yu shows him how hypocritical his way was - he forged bonds, whether of his own volition of not - claiming otherwise becomes bull, and Adachi knows it. So he still yields to both his own ideology of Chaos, where might makes right, and to Yu's, where bonds make the world around you clearer (By defeating Adachi, Yu proves his outlook is right to Adachi; by displaying the bonds he's made, he shows Adachi has been inadvertently following the very same outlook), and thus, Adachi still clings on to his position of a bringer of Chaos - he wasn't mighty enough to prove his own path, so he follows the path of the mighty - in this case, Yu.
I like this song a lot with how it elaborates a bit more on Adachi's perspective. Makes me wish this was in the games too because the Adachi fight itself was always a bit underwhelming.
I actually always thought the easiness of his fight was intentional. I thought it was meant to show that Yu was stronger because of his friends, while Adachi turned out to be weak and sorta pathetic
This theme is perfect for Adachi , i wish his fight in the game had more spotlight and was harder though :/ But the song describes very well the Ying Yang between Yu and Adachi, as their positions could've been easily switched (The glass of water being half-empty/half-full fits this so godamn well damn)
As an active Ultimax and fighting game player, it's so weird to me that Persona doesn't have matchup themes, when every other arcsys fighter, even at the time of Ultimax's release, had them
(Mild spoiler warning for Persona 4 Golden NG+) This is the song I imagine would play if they made the Adachi fight in 2 phases. Phase 1, New World Fool, Base awakened Persona. Phase 2, this song with a second awakening, Magatsu Izanagi-no-Okami
It would be impossible for Magatsu Izanagi to become an Okami. In the Kojiki, Izanagi needs to cleans himself of Magatsuhi to achieve his pure form again (Izanagi-no-Okami) that’s why Adachi’s persona is so impactful symbolically because it comes off as Adachi saying “See, you and I. We aren’t so different. Why don’t you join me and betray those stupid friends?” With Yu’s later awakening of Izanagi-no-Okami being his refutation of the lies presented by Adachi and Izanami.
