I used an x58 Asus Essentio Desktop build with i7 920 for 14 years. Originally came with an ASUS GTX 260 with a camo anime chick graphic lol. Upgraded to a similar to yours Sapphire 6870, MSI Twin Frozr 660ti, then finally a EVGA single fan 1050ti. A Xeon x5670 @ 4.20ghz, 24gb ddr3 1666mhz, and an ssd made it a lot better. I think the final upgrades will be usb 3, passed down 1660 super, and maybe raid ssds lol. It's served me well throughout the years

Fun fact, the i7 980x had 6 cores and HTT for 12 threads! I had a x58 rig for years, started with a i7 950 and a GTX 660 and it's end of life was a xeon x5670 and a 1050 ti with 24 GB of RAM. My favorite platform ever made. I have a LGA 1366 CPU on my keychain.

the upside down board was called BTX. The Pentium 4 Netburst CPUs ran hot, BTX benefited airflow (you're right). Eventually Intel switched to the core architecture. This made BTX irrelevant. Also all the motherboard and case manufacturers hated it

    • @TrippTech

I’m guessing by moving the cpu lower and away from the psu, it improve the circulation of air within the case?

I remember very clearly lol. My first family computer was a dell dimension with a pentium 4. Would heat up the room in half an hour.
It’s pretty funny how instead of just doing architectural improvements to help the cpu not be a toaster, they decide to just invent a new case standard.

Love that old Dell case you got there! I replaced my i7 920 with a Xeon X5670 in my ASUS P6T Deluxe v2 board. I couldn't resist because the Xeon not only has six cores and twelve threads compared to the 920s four cores and eight threads but the guy only wanted $9 for the Xeon! Great CPUs even for today in many games! 👍👍
PS: I use an ASUS GTX 780 ti with it and it also still games pretty well with DX11 games and older even though it can chug down 250 watts of power! I do have an RX 580 8GB card that I once tried in it with the 920 but I am saving it to use in another newer retro PC with a Xeon E3 1245 in it. Maybe I'll put it back in just to see how it performs with the Xeon X5670.....🤔

I hardly think it was intended to be a work station but rather a gaming PC.

I just restored a red 630i as well! I initially upgraded it with a C2Q 9650 and a GTX 280, but discovered that Dell hardwired the PCIe x16 slot to just 8x, and its only PCIe 1.1, its really crippled, so totally gutted it and its got a Matching MSI Gaming 5 Z97 board with a i7 4790k, and an eVGA GTX 960 SSC.
