A little extra information: Later on Lycaon is deified as a culture hero/daimon, thus he could also be considered a werewolf god (a minor deity obviously).
Yep. And what more, I read in an old Thracian myth that it was said the werewolves had their main lair on Mount Haimos in Thrace, in the Iron palace of Ares, where the sun light is weak, together with Harpies, furies, vampires, dragons, lizard like things, predator birds, fire breating horses, and other nasty monsters and gods of war and bloodshed. That's just epic.
A recurrent theme in Greek mythology and a general cultural aphorism was: "Everything in moderation; nothing in excess". One of the most sacred places in Greece, the temple of Apollo at Delphi, bore the inscription "Meden Agan" (μηδὲν ἄγαν) - 'Nothing in excess'. This story is a great example of this general principle: even gods should be worshiped in moderation; fanaticism is dangerous.
And so the werewolves began their life as cursed monsters. Although what Zues would eventually realize that the very people he cursed would begin to embrace them as gifts to build their history.
I thought the original legend said that they fed Zeus, or attempted to feed him Lycones own youngest son he had killed purely to test his theory, and Zeus was not only horrified and furious at the prospect of them trying to trick him to eat human meat, but also to the horrific fact that he had killed his very own child to do it.
@Jon's Labyrinth I just checked, the flesh that was served to Zeus was the flesh of Nyctimus, The youngest of his sones (apparently lycone had 50 sons).
Another version of this story is that the feast was made from flesh of one of his 50 children (yes, this guy was a rabbit and had many wives lol) and that Zeus brought that poor kid back to life after he punished Lycaon.
I think you are talking about the story involving one of Zeus' sons (Tantulus) trying to feed him his grandson (Pelops) to test the god's observation. Zeus revived Pelops and gave him his father's kingdom and Tantulus had to live an eternal punishment
The version I've heard wasn't just that they were having human flesh for dinner--it was actually one of Lycaon's own sons. Don't worry, the kid gets brought back to life by Zeus--but he killed the rest of Lycaon's sons, and transformed the king into a wolf.
You’re thinking about one of Zeus’ sons offering his own sons (Zeus’ grandson) to Zeus, Hermes and Demeter. Demeter actually ate the shoulder of his grandson but Hephaestes created an Ivory shoulder for the child. And they returned him to life, his name was Pelops and he became the King of the Peloponese
