Yes. For small investors mutual fund is the right way. In mutual fund one can make a consistent growth. I am an retired person of age 74. I have been investing in stock market through mutual fund only not in direct stocks. Since I come within 5 Lack limit I go for dividend income. It is really quite rewarding. Balance 80% of my investment is in bank, corporate FDs SCSS and post office MIS. Also I have a small annuity. There is no pension. From the interest earned I invest in mutual funds( through distributor) My wife also follow the same method. As Mr Shyam said discipline with systematic investment is the key for success. Since I have been investing for a long time I have a notional capital gain of 15 to 20% in addition.
