    Kay was my favorite character too. I love that edition that you have.
    Thanks for alerting me to Shawn's interview of Nancy Pearl! She is one of my all time favorite people (and I even have her librarian action figure LOL)
    Barchester Towers is definitely my favorite of that series.
    And funnily, I just started reading Joy in the Morning, also after seeing Steve talk about it.
    I think my favorite Sarah Waters is Affinity. Or Fingersmith. Or The Little Stranger... LOL I could never decide!

      So far, my comments are mixed on the best Waters already! I love that you have an action figure of Nancy Pearl haha, the reaction in the comments to that video shows how loved she seems to be. I've never read a Wodehouse which wasn't hilarious so I'm sure you will enjoy it.

    I’ve never heard of Sarah Waters before Kelly posted her favorite books of the year.😂. I guess I need to put her on the list!

    I enjoy your general waffles section name :D - I was super lucky to meet Alice Roberts a few years ago and have her booked Tamed really enjoy the way she writes - hadn't seen that one.

      I now realise she is from Time Team! So that makes meeting her a lot cooler in my nerdy mind.

    I love Kay! It wasn’t my number one, but it was in my top 5 books of 2023. You should read Fingersmith! Happy reading this weekend! 💛

      I do have it on my Kindle so that will probably happen at some point, I really enjoy her style.

    I’m intrigued to try the Night Watch sometime. Fingersmith is the only Sarah Waters book I’ve read (having previously seen the Handmaiden), but I think I’d like her stuff more now than I did when I read it. Maybe I’ll find out this year!

      It has some similar bits to Blackout/All Clear which is nice, but very different authors.

      @@AaronReadABook I do really enjoy time travel stories which feel really well researched and grounded in a time period, so I'd probably enjoy historical fiction researched with the same rigour but without the sci-fi trappings.

    I loved the night watch! I bought loads of other Sarah Waters after I read it and haven't read any of them yet 🙈
    As Jo said, funny that we all bought ancestors!
    I hope you're feeling better, I was wondering if you were OK when you didn't post for a while but thought maybe you just needed a week off 😊

      Yeah just a normal bit of flu. Plus I like to have several books to wrap up, although that's silly because I actually like hearing about people in the middle of books. I have the fingersmith and I might buy some more, I think I know the twists in it from the film so I want something else too. Ancestors is fun, I loved doing archaeology so I dunno why I haven't read more about it.

    Hi Aaron! My favourite Sarah Waters is the first one I read, Fingersmith. It was that feeling of discovering a new to you author and loving the writing. I want to read The Night Watch next. Also Ancestors is on my TBR for #historathon2024 but first I need to finish The Rise of Rome by Anthony Everitt. Enjoyed your video!

      Rise of Rome sounds a bit like SQPR which I liked. I do own the Fingersmith so that might be my next one!

      From what I’ve heard and the reading experience so far, SPQR might have been the wiser choice. 😊

    Hope you’re feeling better Aaron 👍How great that you bought Book Lust, that was such a good interview and Nancy Pearl is so interesting to listen to. I think I need to reread all the Barchester series before I decide on my favorite but Small House at Allington would be top two I think. I’ve only read two Sarah Waters and my favorite is Tipping the Velvet, I really liked The Nightwatch but, like you, it wasn’t a five star read. How funny you are reading Ancestors, Sarah and I bought a copy each when I was in England to read together so hopefully we will get to it for the first quarter of Historathon.

      We must have some sort of Essex mindmeld. As I suspected, everyone has said a different Waters book 😂 Nancy's love of Pratchett meant I had see what else she likes.

    Reading multiple books at once?! Scandalous. 😄
    Lordy Trollope got increasingly wordy as he went along didn't he, I'd thought Dr Thorne looked like a chunker...

    • @AaronReadABook
      @AaronReadABook  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The wordier he gets the less predictable he becomes though. In his bigger books the characters seem to have a life of their own.

    I hope to read Night Watch at some point. I tried to read Fingersmith last year and dnfed it about halfway through. I know most people absolutely love it, but I hated all of the characters and didn't care about the story because of that. I think I will like Night Watch better.

    • @AaronReadABook
      @AaronReadABook  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      She definitely doesn't write characters you can wholeheartedly back that's for sure. I'm generally the same if I don't like the characters I struggle.

    I had the flu A this year too! Not fun! I don't know if I've had it before... if I did, I didn't know that's what it was.
    I really would like to finish reading Sarah Waters's books. I've read 3 I think, but need to look at the list and see what I'm missing. I've always thought Ancestors sounded interesting.
    I'm reading The Lady of the Camellias by Dumas right now :) I rarely read classics, but it's going well!
    Do you have any books you've read that cover British history (like Romans and before, fiction or nonfiction) that aren't boring?

    • @AaronReadABook
      @AaronReadABook  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've not read much British stuff from that long ago tbh. I was always more interested in the medieval stuff. I've not heard of that Dumas book, I have the three musketeers which I need to get to. Which Waters was your favourite?
