  • In this video we look at positional play in the game of pool, how to get the cue ball where we want it and aiming for areas of the table. We also look at how to plan a series of shots to complete a clearance. The shots are carried out on a 7ft UK 8 ball table but most of the same principles apply to both american pool and snooker.

    cheers for these videos, appreciate the time an effort that went into it, by far the best pool content for uk pool. The analysis tool you use helps loads. It made the term working from black easier to understand.

    Definitely the best channel for UK pool. I've been looking around for lessons and unfortunately some of the teachings just didn't translate into the UK game. Really starting to improve my game by watching these. Thanks Pool School.

      Thank you George. I'll see what I can do on safety play. It's a slightly tricky one to do because it depends on what rules you play. I currently play the EPA World Eight Ball Rules, but safety and tactics for that can be quite different from IPA Blackball rules, or UPA 8 ball rules.

    I agree with your route and that was what I would go for.
    One thing I would say is the hardest pot is likely to be on the black, which if missed, should probably lead to yellow losing the game. But then if we can't execute a range of pots then it probably isn't our positional play that should be our immediate area to look to improve.
    There is also the danger of finishing too straight on the final yellow to the corner and cannoning the bottom right red or worse still snookering ourselves behind it.
    I guess there could be another route of yellow to bottom right corner, either with backspin or stun off the cushion for the left yellow to left middle. Depending on our angle for the second shot to left middle will influence the next shot but there should be a to hold the white for a half ball yellow to right middle to come off the right cushion for the black in the left middle.
    The very big downside to this route is that we cannot roll the first yellow dead weight as we'd need a reasonable amount of backspin or pace on the white, so if missed it wouldn't give us the second prize of blocking the red to the bottom right.
    Also this alternative route gives us no advantage of an easier shot on the black than the first route.
    A final outside suggestion, and I can't quite tell from the view, but could we take yellow to bottom right with a bit of pace to try to stun off the cushion into the bottom right red freeing the black to bottom right corner. This would then mean yellow to left middle to hold the white for the final yellow to right middle, either screwing back if straight for black to right corner, or coming in an out of baulk (you know what I mean) for the black bottom right, or if the other side on the last yellow, off the right cushion for black left middle as in the first alternative route described above.
    I would always go for the first route as I was never a good enough potter to consistently attempt either alternative route.
    Thanks for listening.
    Great video as always.

    Same although initially was a bit daunting but your work back from the black structure made it do able even for a duffer like me. I am learning plenty with your contribution and has me working out how much I have to still learn but with my current skill level I can certainly get way better with the know how to be better in many ways . A big thank you for your clips which I appreciate immensely. I WILL PUT WHAT I HAVE AND CAN LEARN TO GOOD USE.

    I took a different route. Started with the yellow over the corner pocket ( your 3rd played ) with bottom left on the cueball softly. Then played the ball to the middle ( your first played ) with stun to stop the cueball dead. My final yellow into the opposite middle ( your 2nd played ) with slight right hand side to get around the red. Then played the black into the middle same as you.
    Great video! Keep up the amazing content! Recently subscribed as I just joined my first pool league.

      @@PoolSchool I did not hear you saying yellow balls so I tried like 5 mins to think how to put the far left red and then could not make it, so checked what you thought and you just pot the yellows... damn. 😂 Forgot you potted yellows on the previous clip, because I thought you would pot reds as the holes would be more open for black then.

      @@PoolSchool But after that I just thought 'whatever' and decided to finish the plan to pot reds: 1. Bottom-left red so it leaves cue ball behind the top left red. 2. Top-left red (long shot) so the cue ball back a little for the bottom-right red. 3. Bottom-right red so it stops for the top-middle red. 4. Top-middle red so it stops for the black. 🙂

    • @RRJOfficial
      @RRJOfficial 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PoolSchool Another way waa to put the second red into middle, but position looked more difficult then and middle shots are more difficult compared to long corner to corner shots for some kind of reason. :D

    Hi just a thought about how to go about the last scenario slightly different. My thought process whilst playing a shot is weighing up how much attention is paid to pot and position. In percentage terms at best 1% pot and 99% position. Obviously that wont happen every shot but should be strived for every shot. So on your penultimate yellow you could have easily potted it in the middle and got alot closer to the last yellow therefore being able to stun across to the black and get to 3 or 4 inches from the black if only to make it slightly easier it helps in the end

    @pool school is there any possibility for you to do this again but in full table pattern? Asking coz I believe complications will be more than this half table with less balls. Thanks You.

    • @PoolSchool
      @PoolSchool  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on what rules you are playing? In world rules you have two shots. In international rules you have ball in hand but only 1 shot. In black ball you have a free shot plus a visit.

    I have all the shots it's my temporament that lets me down. If someone flukes a ball i get angry it it affects my game,if I miss an easy shot it plays on my mind. Frustrates me not being able to control my emotions lol another thing that is difficult to do is playing under pressure and being nervous. You'd think I'd get use to it over time but 20 years later I'm still always nervous that i let me team down on my game. I win 90% of my games to be fair 😁

    • @PoolSchool
      @PoolSchool  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Temperament is a tough one, and really what sets apart the great players from the good players. At the top level they all know how to execute the shots but it's the ones that control their emotions and produce consistently under pressure that rise to the top. It's no different at local league level, keeping calm in a match when there's a bit of pressure is massively different than playing your mate for fun. It's easy to say but you can't allow yourself to get angry about what the other player does. It's the one aspect you can't control so you have to just accept things, even when it's the most outrageous fluke! One little thing I try to do with my own game is aim for areas with the cue ball instead of specific points, that way you have more room for error and are less likely to be hard on yourself when you're not exactly where you want to be. And also anything can happen in a one off game, if things go wrong, move on and concentrate more on your performance over a season. If you're winning 90% of your games then you've nothing to worry about, and I very much doubt you're letting anyone down!

    Random question but do you hoover your cloth from time to time ?

    • @PoolSchool
      @PoolSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      C Bing No. I brush it, making sure I always brush with the nap of the cloth. I then also do something called blocking. Basically I have an off cut of cloth that I wrap around the wood of the brush, and then drag that down the table (brush wood side down). That tends to take off all the extra little bits of dust and chalk. Then I iron it as well, but only occasionally.
