Actually there are a lot of written and oral records of ancient civilizations that used tons of brightly colored material for decoration, design, etc. We just think of it all being muted and bland because that’s what time and the sun does to things: it washes them out and they get dirty. So finding these brightly colored blocks makes sense in Minecraft where only copper changes via oxidation over time.

The problem is that it doesn't fit in some of the biomes it's in. For example, it's like putting a savanna village in a plains biome. I feel like these new structures should only spawn in deserts and Mesa. And possibly jungle, too. Anywhere else and it looks off

Maybe the roads of different sites used to string together and create paths to the deep dark.
Going with that line of thought, the portal like structure actually used to contain a giant map that displayed huge areas. Then there is a way to recreate the map which would help locate other types of sites to go robbing... I mean exploring and doing archeology searching.

It would be nice if the cartographer villager gets a new trade with maps to these structures. At least on bedrock they seem to also appear above ground, but in small ravines or exposed caves.
Personally I like the colorful buildings ( remains rather), and if you take the time to restore them as best you can by the clues, it starts making more sense. The tower is pretty easy to restore (and IMO looks rather good in restored condition), but the other buildings need some imagination. It looks like the random blocks are parts of roofs and walks that collapsed. I also suspect that entire parts of the buildings have dropped down a block from where they should have been.
I love the clues and speculation as to what happened (earthquake, flood, volcano eruption?) that caused the structures to collapse and fill with sand dirt and gravel. The colors gives me sn impression that the civilization was rich and thriving, and the workstations that were also shown in the video tells it was quite advanced. Seems to me it whould have been quite peaceful and based on farming as well, as no weapons or types of armor are found in the loot table. Not sure how the armor troms fit into that line of thought though.

It's probably not big enough to have been an actual city, but I think it might have been some sort of general store, or place where travelers on the road would be able to rest. This makes sense, because the structure where the job blocks were would have probably been where craftsmen made stock for the store, the tower could have been an inn, and, going off of what another comment on this video said about armor trims reperesenting professions, then it would make sense that, if it is a general store or inn, all types of people would be there.

My father was an actual archaeologist (God rest his soul) I went on excavation trips with him. It's pretty accurate you'll find a lot of junk. What junk that is depends on the time of the excavation site. Like pottery shards from an ancient rubbish pit or where they discarded their bones after eating. If you're unlucky, their latrine. Or 150 year old buttons, broken bottles and where they tossed their crappy old candlestick. Then 5% of the time you find something REALLY GOOD.

Or store lots of differnt maps.
Or store raw ores until you get 9 to condense them to a block

AND it would keep your base feeling fresh and more beautiful. plssss mojang! ps this is the SON of Anton and Megan Rytting.

The trail ruins are so interesting! I like to believe that the ruins used to be outposts/rest stops for wandering villagers. The pottery and armor templates make me believe they were some kind of trading posts with artisans, and with the more advanced stuff they had, because it was such high traffic foot areas, a lot of these posts got to be more technologically advanced than villages of the time.
Though I have an another theory based on the armor templates.
I think the armor templates point to the thought of different clans based on the design patterns of the armor. These patterns told about where someone with that armor was from, or their specialty perhaps? Like how the military has different branches, the armor has different styles to signify the different branch someone specialized in like the wave for ocean, etc.
If that’s true then that would mean that the trail ruins might really have been outposts/rest stops, since where they’re located are in far out places that look like they might be where patrols would go.
Those are my theories at any rate.

The sand and gravel indicate that the structures were taken by a great flood, that spanned the entire world. I feel that this update is an expansion to the ocean monuments and drowned villages. It's a nice addition to the lore and immersion of the Minecraft world. Given this information, I'd think that the oversaturation of colored clay is due to erosion of what it used to be. So, we'd have to be creative if we want to restore the structures.

I’d like to see the terracotta toned down a bit. If there were a design to it, that would be cool. Like a window on one of these towers seems to have some design put into it. But for the most part, it just looks like a clutter of colors. Like they quite literally threw it together.
On the other hand, this does make it resemble rubble or just a crushed building a bit more

Excavating surprisingly fun, structures interesting, junk needs bundles, sus blocks breaking by falling one block annoying (I had a sus sand that was floating so broke when the block next to it went). This makes archaeology an actual worthwhile feature and not just meh

    I love those ruins!
Here's my theory about what they used to be:
Given the name "trail ruins", the big road on it's center, the presence of stables and the little to no other structures than the tower/stables combo (I've spawned a bunch of them on a test world, one generated with only the road and the tower/stables), I would say they were a sort of breakpoint down the road where wandering people could sleep safe from creepers and such. There were people living and farming here but they weren't big villages, maybe a couple families
It's also probable they were potters, we can find almost half of the the pottery shards sorts there, and they had bricks and terracotta (baked clay, not mined from the mesa, they got "unnatural" colors), and glazed terracotta

The only thing that is jarringly off about the trail ruins is the stonecutter block with its spinning blade, what is powering that thing after thousands of years buried?!
Apart from that I like it. I've seen way too many people not realising that the structure is actually pretty coherent once you remove all the sand and gravel. I think it is a cool structure that could maybe have a few more interesting sub-structures that make you wonder what they were rather than just buildings. Maybe like how the ancient city has some shrine-looking structures for example.

It would be cool if the sniffer egg could only be found in these structures, the law could be that the egg was protected or something and is now lost to the ages. Also, it would be could to find some sort of new music disc like the ancient city and if you have both you can combine them to discover the ancient law of the game.
