Really good video. Especially for the fact that it explains counter espionage. A lot of times is forgotten or put on the side, when in reality it's half of the job.

There is a solution to your "Spy" problem. Since spy can be both verb for the action of spying and noun for a person who is a spy.
Use the Verb "Intelligence" and the Noun "Intelligencer" as translations, they are both synonyms for the two types of spy but are much clearer about which type you're referring to.

@@AntonyCummins I read The Drop Sir and I'm definitely interested! I had moved locations so was just waiting to set up my workstation before requesting an appointment. It'll be such an honour and good time to chat with you face to face! I really enjoyed this video a lot and as always you impress me with your genuinity towards the warrior spirit and history. I especially appreciate your blatant honesty and slightly dark sense of humour. I always have a laugh at your clarity with death. Personally I believe these long lecture videos displaying set pieces are your very best video works. This is definitely a university level presentation! I'll write your email to set up a Zoom meeting. Thanks again! -Ryan 158

Boohahhah. Now I can make my move into night shift supervisor at McD's. By the time I draw Socialist Security, my reign shall be complete. A New Order will arise under the waffle iron fist of MY leadership!

A great video. The miniatures really help visualize how the different spies worked. Now I want to apply this with reading of Western Spies and see if this crosses over. I was just reading about James Fullerton who was a Scottish spy for King James VI (who later becomes King James I of England). He plays multiple roles and works multiple sides but was always loyal to King James and had his best interest in heart.

Anthony should be using more figures or toys to demonstrate warfare and spies.
I ALSO would love to see his take on the FICTION of ninja, from their appearance in theater or the story of "Jiraiya the Gallant"

Antony , you seemed to translate the "切" in "望聞問切" as cut , but it actually means checking someone's pulse and it's from chinese medicine .
    source : 經言,望而知之謂之神,聞而知之謂之聖,問而知之謂之工,切脈而知之謂之巧。

      @AntonyCummins  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes it is explained further down the text why it is cut. It’s not a literally cut

Yes! Exactly what I asked in another video (which I watched recently); adding miniatures, etc. probs makes things easier to grasp.
And the video was great, as well, but that's the norm for you, lad.
    Edit:
Does anyone else see it as funny when you make a video talking about spies and spying (and a bit about assassinations), and then you say it's wrong to lie :P
But yeah, I wholly agree that credit should be given where credit is due. That's one of the markers of a professional, in my opinion.
Also, I hope that you've recovered well from your China flu.

This was great! I have all of these books and its really beneficial to have these teachings contextualized. Thank you.
Have you had a chance to research/compare Chinese/Japanese warfare traditions with Western ones? For example, Vegetius’ Epitome of Military Science.

excellent video antony really makes clear the use of shinobi would the words agent/agents be a better translation into english rather than spy?? and would it be fair too say that the professional 'surving spy' were the double-0 section of their day as a rough equivalent
