Happy new year from NYC! We still have several hours to go here. Me and my wife were in Japan last year from December 16 to the 29th. She was three months pregnant at the time and now we’re expecting our second child. We are now making plans to visit Japan at around 2021 and stayed for almost a month next time around.

I was on the other side of the Arakawa river, nobody was there and i only saw fireworks very, very far away, possibly it was the countdown at Tokyo tower... very little fireworks around Skytree unfortunately. What events was going on in Asakusa?

Here in NZ the pyrotechnics prepare the fireworks on top of the Sky tower prior to the New Year countdown, so perhaps the local authorities could come up with a solution to add fireworks on top or right next to the base of the skytree. 😁🎉
From what I saw in the video, it was not "that" many people, not as many as I experienced when I lived in Asakusa around 2014. I just stayed away from the Sensoji Temple, only when there during the morning to give a short pray. At midnight I celebrated with friends indoors instead and had soba :D
