If I had a teenage daughter like this I'd be quite happy. I have friends who have teenage daughters that have gone completely off the rails; heavy drinking/doing drugs, staying out all night, going to covid raves, not studying. This girl is alright. Maybe a little bit too obsessed with it. She's going to be devastated when her favourite band all have to do mandatory 2 years military service.

It's totally possible to be a kpop fan without wanting to move all the way to Korea, eating strictly Korean food, or wanting to be part of the culture. There are lots of casual fans who are in it mainly for the music and entertainment - like myself. It's just music in a different language and a unique industry structure. I hope she's aware of the significant cultural differences between Korea and the UK. Uprooting her life to another country to be a 'superfan' doesn't seem like the best idea.
The group she follows, Seventeen, are some of the best performers in the industry and have a lot to offer through their artistry.

    • @backupwhatever8928

Exactly. I’m a casual fan who only owns one album and a poster and whilst it is my dream to travel to Korea one day but I don’t think about living there. I do enjoy food from the east but I’ve never tried Korean food. There’s a lot of difference from here (UK) and Korea culturally definitely and I do hope she realises that. Koreans would definitely find her over the top obsessed and a bit crazy if I’m honest and some K-pop fans regret their choices but if it’s what she wants then she can do so.

“Their culture has so much depth and we just have pubs”, “I want to go to Korea so I can be the biggest super fan.”, kinda hints at Koreaboo behavior. And that’s not a term I use lightly. Being a fan is great and fun and not being Korean doesn’t mean you can’t love the music or culture. I never want to cause stress to people who just genuinely enjoy kpop, (as I am one of those people) but when you start to move into downgrading or resenting your own culture, becoming obsessed with things simply because they are Korean and pulling away from things that are from your own culture, wanting to move to Korea just because of kpop or kpop stars, it becomes more complicated. It looks more like using Korea as an escape from your own life and culture and ignoring reality while taking on an identity very superficially. Some international fans go so far as wanting or wishing they were born Korean. (For anyone wondering that could be considered the true definition of ‘Koreaboo’). I have even seen international fans say to Korean people “you are so lucky to be Korean” 🙈

hi, i'm one of the people who's in this documentary!! - i'd like to point out that we are not koreaboos or anything of the sort - i know it might not be easy to tell from this short video. i totally appreciate where you're coming from, and we take a lot of caution to make sure we don't come across that way. korea is very much a beautiful country, and the culture is beautiful too, and this documentary only shows a tiny fraction of how much we appreciate it outside of just k-pop.

At least with k pop it's exposing them to another culture and language. I have been a KPOP fan for 20 years and I have taught KPOP dance classes to people like this teen There is a difference of liking a boyband - which I never did. And the underlying delusion-of becomng a KPOP idol to date an Idol - which most of the girls want. KPOP dance for fitness and fun is fine but almost 99% of these girls cannot dance or perform and they dont understand idols are plucked from the age of 12 years old - by the time they are in their late teens they are too old - South Koreans only want westerners as influence and collaboration for their own artistes. I can say many of the fans are just plain delusional which also makes them vulnerable. SK can also be highly dangerous as an older black female who looks much younger - I am targeted. hit on as a westerner about 3 times daily by males but their nonsense just makes me laugh or if they get to heavy I film them. Not sure what would have happened to me if I was really young and someone fed me some BS about becoming an idol. South Korea is safe but you have to be grounded not delusional or desperate. I see desperation in faces especially in Hongdae. And frankly many of the girls are open to exploitation. Just putting it out there. Also 99.9% of Korean men dont look like idols or actors. they are totally fearless and brazen with women during broad daylight hours and get drunk quite often after 6pm as it is a drinking culture.

I grown up with kpop too .
I’m a 100% Asian girl , but I living in the UK for the last 10 year .
Back to that day , kpop is just something new and flashy to me , cuz everyone look so good , like too good to be true .
But slowly after that , I finally understand how hard k-idol/ k-celebrities have to been thru and how k- industry work , I give them my biggest respect .
Back to 15 year ago, to buy an official album to me is something that I can’t even dream cuz it expensive and it hard to get.
But now , I’m a grown up women who have been a kpop fan for more than 15 year , I’m so proud to look back and think I have AMAZING CHILDHOOD with kpop . And I can buy whatever album I want now , and no one can stop me .
Last year , for the first time ever I went to SEVENTEEN CONCERT in JAPAN, I been saving money for so long and travel 14 hours from London to Tokyo just to see my favourite ARTIST.
Japan never be my dream destination, but because I love my idol , l love SEVENTEEN- my most favourite artist on the planet, I actually went there alone and actually do something that I would never think I would do .
All thank to SEVENTEEN- a kpop artist, thank to them I actually have encouraged to do something bigger , and be someone better .

I grew up listening to K-Pop in the UK from the age of 9, and I still do, so I do wonder what makes Livy the biggest kpop fan in the UK when she does what most fans do (however we're just less obsessive and koreaboo-ish). I'm now in university also and I study a foreign language at university (that's not Korean), but I can understand why this music unites a lot of people and inspire them to take up a career incorporating the language: It influenced my childhood, my teenage years and my career aspirations (I wanted to be a film maker and now I want to be a journalist in East Asia)
People seem to forget that there are generations growing up using technology from a young age and this technology can expose us to cultures other than that of our native country's.
There's a stigma around being a k-pop fan and this clip shows it so well; K-pop fans seem to be insane and obsessive when it's not the case for all fans.
Reading the comments below I can see why you'd think the ways in which you do, but it's a bit narrow-minded. It may not be your cup of tea, but the music is as much of an influence on a person's life as any type of music/genre really. Just a case of if you're mature enough to say "oh i'm not a fan of that, but good for you" or be like Blake down in the comments and call people "bent". Bit dumb really.

@@caitlinclarkgf shes obviously using korean culture as an escape from her own life which is a MAJOR red flag (coming from a korean person btw so don't try to argue) , she goes crazy over things JUST bc they are korean which makes many Koreans including me so uncomfortable, she wants to live in Korea just bc of kpop, she talks about how "korean culture" is just "so beautiful" and I bet you £1000000 that she isn't talking about actual korean culture but the western understanding of korean culture which is kpop, kdrama,"aesthetic food" etc., she also talks negatively about British culture (which I agree with. British culture (aka colonization, racism, classism etc , is terrible), but shes condensed that too "pubs and fish and chips". So many problems with that 1. It shows that she thinks korean culture is cute food or wtv 2. She doesn't acknowledge what British culture actuakly is 3. Shows she has no understanding of what culture is (which is expected after all shes ignorant and white).
In conclusion shes totally fetishizing korea and it's people, using korea for it's "aesthetic" and kpop or wtv. It's totally clear that this is a phase that she'll grow out of.
