I'm from Chicago and I wish they would have left the rails on the 606 like they did on the high line, on the 606 they completely removed all the rails and while it looks nice, It would have been even nicer if they had left some of the rails in so you could see the history of it. Excellent video!

@Eragor the Kindhearted worked as a brakeman for 2 years and drove a tractor trailer since 1986 so I worked in both industries I know without huge quantities of freight railroads can’t survive that’s why I pointed the finger at politicians with their high taxes and idiotic regulations that drove heavy industries away nabisco was a big customer on the high line they left in 1959

    Glad you made the correction.
My dad worked as the general superintendent for the GC that converted Bell Labs to Westbeth back in the late '60's.
He took me as a young teenager on Saturdays to the job.
There was still a lot of Bell paraphasia to rummage through.

Gooodnite Bro. And that was a awesome video of the Old Highliner. And Thank's for the history lesson also Bro. It's awesome park also !!!

I thought this highline was older than anything in NYC. But based on this video, it is barely older than the newest elevated line built in Brooklyn.
It was a very efficient line and the fact it was allowed to be trancated by tractor trailer traffic, is a sin of itself!
And as much as it good to turn it to a park plaza, it would have been better serve as it intended purpose. But that's life!

They should've put a single-track tramway on this line with passing loops and a Pedestrian/Bike path over one side of the existing track but at least they didn't demolish the railway line...

Parks are not the only way old rail lines are trying to be brought back, some are actually tried to be brought back as rail lines though the plans keep getting ignored.

I was up there everyday in the mid 80s . There was a music video made up there back in the 80s by a group called Art Of Noise and the song is called Close to the Edit. The HIGHLINE was a graffiti hall of Fame back then with many famous graffiti writers from the NYC subway era painting pieces up there. It was a scary but magical place with mariquant plants growing wild and prostitution taking place with beds lined up in the tunnels. Very different era

I thought they were going to make a new elevated transit line from the high line. Oh well.

So correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the building that used to be the original end of the highline destroyed recently?

Love the highline but I wish it wasn’t surrounded by expensive housing :(
