I love this game, when the official servers shut down, i literally hooked up my wii u to my phone's hotspot to play all day, and im glad that it is still working with pretendo! Id love to see a competitive scene rise from this, kind of like melee
So happy about this! I only got to experience it a few times using my friend's Wii U, but now we have a chance to actually play on some maps I missed before!
Thanks for this video, cleared some things up. I thought making a pretendo account would replace your wiiu save files, but this guide makes it sound like it only creates another, new account that can connect with pretendo servers but has no existing data, those save files still being on the first account.

I really would but man, I think I won't. I've definitely said my goodbyes and being able to lobby with you on the final hours is one of my best memory send offs and I will always treasure that 😊 Also, I use my Wii u for mario kart wii stuff so I'll most likely keep that.
Splatoon 1 is the best. It's the most chatic of them all. The splats and weapon shots sound the best, even when u get splat the screen is full of color. The music is also the best with the nicest winning and losing music. The lobby is my favorite as well plus the motion controls are more responsive and I miss how ranked used to work
feel like it’s important to mention for others that Pretendo’s matchmaking is extremely rudimentary. As far as I can tell the Splatoon secure server implements no kind of skill based matchmaking or even regional matchmaking-it just dumps you into the first (and usually only) room that fits the requirements.
I used the same email back in january when i made my pretendo account because i didnt know about it i only knew about the username thing. but so far nothing has went wrong
Mine doesn't work when I try to create another user; it says there is an error code. If this is fixable please let me know but I am glad people can still play Splatoon.
Note this is just the easier method modding your wii u is not hard at all and it provides a useful tool to transfer your save data from ur main user to your pretendo account

None of the actual gameplay data gets sent to the server, so Pretendo just steps in as the matchmaker. Hopefully as time goes on, projects like this will be open-sourced so even if all the servers go away, you could in theory download the project and host your own in 10-15 years (if you were so inclined). I don't know how Nintendo would feel about that though... Which is why it would be good for longevity if first-party developers like nintendo released their tools to allow third-party developers to keep the consoles alive after they end support.

I'm not really keen on this whole all Ranks play together thing where they're all combined, I'm gonna be honest. I understand that was probably necessary just to make sure people could even get in lobbies at all given the likely much lower playercount, so it is what it is, but otherwise that kinda completely ruins the point of ranks altogether, ranks basically don't exist there. There's no real gradually climbing the skill brackets to the top as you improve, if you're at a lower rank that should be indicative of your likely skill level and you get matched with others at your level. But now a newbie C- player is put in the same matches as an S+99 and that's not...great, not only is it not the same experience anymore but it also just...has problems. I never got to S rank in Splatoon 1 when it was online so idk how barren it was there, but at the lower ranks I didn't see any issues getting matches, and being stuck going against top rank players at bottom level just isn't good matchmaking generally speaking.
For a 9 Year Old Game it makes way more sense in just getting people to play in general while on top of that i feel the "who cares i just want to play a game" factor kicks in. "Newbies" are so unlikely due to the target audience of who this is for which would be people who have already owned Splatoon and a Wii U. If you ask me i just say hey believe in yourself a little bit. If you have some "difficult games" then over time it will only help you get better to keep up within the environment you are put in.

And idk, I did run into plenty of actual "newbies" when playing the past 3 months or so, but even if pure "newbies" don't exist much, there's still a massive disconnect and skill-gap between a...semi-casual I guess you could say?...who's in like the B rank range who still loves to play the game but isn't ultra good and the top ranked best Splat1 players who are super-duper good. Again, I get that for this game the lower player count and all that probably makes it necessary at least for now, and that whole "I just want to play a game factor" and all, but on the other hand...if I remember correctly Mario Kart Wii's fanmade online still matches you based on your "rank," or more accurately how much VR you have, so if you're at like 2000 VR you're not gonna get matched with a 9999VR racer very often, but maybe I'm misremembering that, idk. Personally, I think it would be much better if the system PRIORITIZED getting you into matches with players of similar rank, but if it can't find enough then it starts filling it in with people in other ranks, that seems the best of both worlds to me and still works for that "I just want to play a game" factor too. But I'm not a developer behind the scenes so I have no idea how hard doing that would be to implement so maybe it's not possible. Regardless, I don't wanna get things twisted, I'd INFINITELY rather have this system than no online at all, and if the proper Ranked system would actually mean nothing but dead lobbies then yeah I'd take this over that too because it is better to be able to play at all than not play. I'm just iffy on whether this is ideal or not, that's all.

Yeah he said “waiting for new wii u to come in” so his old wii u broke and since the save data is stored there there’s no humanly possible way to restore it unless it was done pre breaking since the save data is stored on the wii u itself

Same thing pretendo patches the network thing so literally almost everything at the point on the 3ds and wii u online and miiverse besides a few games atm like Pokémon and some games that are up but being worked on so every copy works keep up with their progress on their website it shows you everything that they are doing although a bit of it is oudated
If you are like me and used the same email there is a way. As I didnt think about it. I had made the account a long time ago. When you log in only the correct username and password is needed. Just put a fake email and it will still log in. Just when you log in you will have to hit the later button.

I was experiencing Splatoon 1 withdrawal, so I just bit the bullet and hacked my Wii U. Not a smooth process for me, but eventually got it set up lol.

I lost all my data, so there is no reason to play Splatoon 1 again with all my Super Sea Snails gone.
Pretendo makes you restart anyway so might as well give it a shot

The copy of the game can be physical or digital, it doesn't matter. All that matters is that your own the console and the game.
