The cuisine of the US Virgin Islands reflects the influences of many different cultures and food throughout the Caribbean. Still, to really experience it, you need to try local dishes at spots that may not be well-known to tourists.
Dishes like fish and fungi “foon-jee” and strew conch are both unique to the Caribbean and the Virgin Islands!
THIS IS IMPORTANT!
As we traveled around the island, we spoke with a few of the locals who mentioned that a big reason a lot of these local restaurants are cash only is because tourists have returned home and filed misuse of their credit cards to get money back from trips. Please, please don't be those kinds of people!

I had my first martini at the Greenhouse with my first GF that I brought down from Connecticut when I was 17 and she was 16. I also puked for the first time at a bar, outside in the bushes that used to be there back in 1986. I grew up on the island visiting my mom in Massachusetts during the summer vacation through the 1980s. In the late 1980s The Greenhouse used to have a live band play on the stage that was where the gambling machines are now. That was the party time for St. Thomas, which has largely left the island.
You hit a good mix of local and touristy places. Next time you return, reach out! There are some more amazing restaurants here you should hit. Brooks Bar is one of our favorite spots! So glad you loved the food there.
Yes! Brooks was so good. Would love to hear your recommendations
Can't wait for the next videos!!!
Thanks for watching!!
Me gusto sus recomendaciones … GRACIAS AMIGOS! Turistas!! 🫠
Thank you! Such good food on the island
Great video ❤
Thank you!!
This is a great review of the fun tourist spots on STT. Across the parking lot from Duffy's Love Shack in Red Hook is XO, a restaurant/bar that caters to locals, as well as visitors, with friendly bartenders and food that is always good and sometimes outstanding! Try it next time you visit.
Thanks for the info! We will!
Definitely going for the calamari and the burger at the end! All🤤
Yesss. Those burgers were so solid. Especially after a full day in the sun
Ah yes, my home is always a vibe!!!
Always
I’m headed to St Thomas in a couple of weeks. I’m looking forward to trying the calamari that you recommended.
Yes! try all of the food you can! Find some friendly locals and they can recommend even more great spots. That's how we found a few places.
Me too.. It looked spicy Sort of reminded me of a shrimp dish we had in Maui, but obviously made with shrimp instead of calamari. It was called 'firecracker shrimp'... delicious!
my real name is actually CALLUM ARi 😭🙈
you'll make me want to jump inside the video and hang out with yall lol. Great video 👍.
Haha love to hear that!
Are the taxis safe to take by myself? I’ll be at port and maybe the sky ride, then charlotte amalie and I want to see maegens bay
We had a rental car, but from what we heard they are fine. Especially by the port and beaches where there's a high number of tourists. And they are regulated so they can't rip you off. Make sure it has taxi lights and a USVI license. Also get their phone number to call. You should be fine with the spots you want to go, but last time we were there we didn't see many outside of Charlotte Amalie, Magen's Bay and Red Hook so if you want to go to a place less populated you'll need to call them.
Kempa’s food truck at Brewers Beach is the real deal, best Patais on the island, the market at the turn to Coki Point best chicken leg local food for real.
Good recommendations
Ooh I hope we can make a pit stop at one of these on our way to Saint John! 😋Yum!
Yes! We’ll have some St John stops coming up in our next video for ya 😁
@@TheDetourDuo yessss! 👏
New Subbie! Great Video! Beautiful couple❤
Thanks for subbing! 🤗
I'm thinkn the tap n still...that burger looked delicious! Great job y'all!! Now come by us and do a video 😊.
Tap and still was a great stop! Thanks for watching! 😁
It's a top 3 burger I've ever had in my life
Hey Guys love these spots! How did you get around? Is local taxi service a good option?
Hey thanks! We rented a jeep for the week just to make getting around easier. Not the cheapest option. There is a red bus that runs the island but I don't think it follows a strict schedule. Taxis are also stationed around Magen's Bay, Red Hook, and Charlotte Amalie
but we didn't see them anywhere else besides that.
Husband and I are looking to visit st Thomas for his 30th bday. Would you recommend an all inclusive resort or pay food separate? How much should you budget for food?
How fun! For our 6 days, we spent around $700 on food between both St Thomas and St John, eating out 2-3 times each day. We stayed in an Airbnb so I am not sure what the resorts are like on the island but it might be worthwhile!
I used to live in St. Thomas and i’d love to offer you some good air bnbs around there because i don’t recommend ressorts.
Next time travel to Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 entire island and Spanish Virgin Island Vieques&Culebra $4V$5C round trip,Puerto Rico is not only Old San Juan,it for tourists ,Ponce and West Coast is better and inexpensive,Greeting of Ceiba, east coast of Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 Gilbert.
Hey thanks, We'll keep that in mind!
hi! my husband and i are going to st. thomas in november for our honeymoon! do you guys recommend renting a car? we are trying to decide whether we should rent a car or not.
My answer is going to be yes, but I have a couple of questions to be sure. How long are you going. How much do you want to see, and do you want to explore a lot of St John as well? If yes, then yes, I'd recommend a car, but make sure it's one that is all wheel drive for driving around the mountains. If you do rent, Dexter's was the best. Lot of horror stories about rental companies there. They were great to rent through, and everyone I've recommended to them have messaged back saying how nice they were
@@TheDetourDuo we will be there for 7 days, and we do want to explore the island a bit especially bc from what i understand, our hotel which is the frenchman’s reef is a bit out of the way from a lot of things bc it’s atop a large hill, but thank you for the info!
@jimin4537 oh then, yeah. I'd say rent a car for sure. You'll have a better experience that way. As far as I know the taxis mosgly hang out in Red Hook and Charlotte Amalie, and it can be pretty difficult to get around if you aren't staying in those two areas
@@TheDetourDuo okay thanks so much!
@jimin4537 you're welcome. I hope you have an amazing time. It's such a great vibe there
Can u please go to ITP/island time pub
Maybe next time. Thanks for the rec
Are you including tips in your totals?
We are
Hello! My fiancé and I are pumped to visit these islands and your vids are so helpful! Could you tell me what the COVID procedures are in the USVI? Will we get tested as we enter the island?
Thank you so much for watching! Are you traveling from the US? From the time we visited in Jan. there were no COVID procedures in place for citizens traveling from the US since it's a US territory. If you're a non-US citizen then the requirement is you need to be fully vaccinated with proof prior to entry. I believe it's recommended to get tested before and after you travel, but not required
@@TheDetourDuo we are from the US. This is great to know; thank you!
Should have tried the K Mart diner.... locals eat here
Hey thanks. We'll keep that in mind for next time
FYI It's pronounced "conk".
So I've heard 😂
Brooks & de' coal pot were the only real "local" restaurant you ate at. The others are tourist spots. You really missed out on other great local Caribbean food.
👍
Very,expensive place
It's not cheap
To expensive, two burgers and four beers, 60 dollars.
