Tibetan Buddhism is a unique expression of Buddhism that has developed over centuries in the high Himalayan region of Tibet and the surrounding areas. The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people, is perhaps the most well-known figure associated with Tibetan Buddhism. In this video, we will explore the key teachings and practices of Tibetan Buddhism, including tantric meditation, compassion, and the concept of emptiness.

Since you mentioned the Panchem Lama, you should have mentioned the _Karmapa_ which is the oldest of the lama lines (and head of the Kagyu school), older than the Dalai Lama.
Perhaps make a separate video about the heads of the five Tibetan Buddhist sects. The Gelug school's head is the _Ganden Tripa_ and the Sakya school's head is the _Sakya Trizin._
The Nyingma school's head (title created in 1960s) is seemingly defunct and decentralized since 2020. The Jonang school's head (resurrected title in the late 1990s) is _Jebtsundamba Khutuktu_ which is also the national head of the Gelug school in Mongolia.
Quick correction: at 12:30, the Sakya Trizin is not a Tulku. That is a family lineage, passed down from father to son in the Sakya school. The man you showed was HH Ngawang Kunga, the retired Sakya Trizin Rinpoche. The current Sakya Trizin is actually HH Ratna Vajra Rinpoche, the eldest son of HH Ngawang Kunga.
It would be nice to see some sources on the destruction of monasteries and libraries in China, it sounds like the kind of thing that people think the cultural revolution was like in the West, sorry if you post your sources somewhere else, I only follow you on TH-cam

my father is a phd in tibetology. i think he would recommend to learn the tibetan language as it will enrich your studies if you choose to pursue them. the tibetan culture has been under siege for many decades with books burnt and culture lost. learning the language and using that skill to translate and preserve texts is much needed

Master Thich Nhat Hanh (Mahayana/ZEN) explains concept of emptiness very easy and clear in his teachings 🙏🏻
I don't think the translation to "emptiness" fits the concept very well. I believe that omnipresence or even the word he used "interdependence" provides for a more proper translation to the principle than "emptiness."

I practiced meditation and studied as a practitioner in the Mahayana, Vajrayana and Dzogchen traditions for decades, inspired by and often under the direct tutelage of some great teachers and lamas. I am grateful and have lots of respect for the tradition.
But, probably like any naive and serious practitioner of many religions encountered an entrenched political establishments, with the prettiest of rivalries, wars and toxic secrets and psychopathies, along with profound teachings and practices.
You left out a few important things. Start with WHY the Chinese attacked those very oppressive "monasteries."

Many years ago, as a World Religions major. We as a class were tasked with visiting five houses of worship for the five largest world religions. I visited them all to fulfill the requirements of the assignment and earn my grade. However, after visiting the grandiose houses of Catholicism and Islam. I had trouble finding a place to visit to experience Buddhism. To my surprise I found a small Darmha Center just 4 miles from my home. So, I went to visit it and met the Monks, who had been ones that escaped Tibet and fled to India. After that they came to the United States. I began studying with them every Sunday and we chanted and I listened to the eldest monk talk to us about the impermanence of all things. I began reading and found joy in the concepts of the Bards and how reincarnation manifests itself from the ether to the physical realm. (The Bard of the Becoming) It was at this point that I began to lose my worries and also my desires to attain more material possessions and gratifications.
However, living in America, it didn't last long as I was a student in an expensive university, living on borrowed money and time. And I was surrounded and permeated by capitalism and excess. No matter how much I rebelled against it, no matter how much I resisted the minute by minute onslaught of advertisers, marketers, colleagues, friends, family and love interests. I ultimately gave in and succumbed to the pressures and went back to my previous existence. Only, now I was changed and couldn't approach my old life in the same manner as before...knowing and feeling what I had learned anew.
The teachings always stuck with me and were always in my thoughts, from the mundane to the critical.
Flash forward now some 18+ years. And in 2018 after many years of ignoring my lessons. I closed my company, sold every possession and gave many away, including a pretty fine small sailing yacht that I once loved dearly. I sold 3 very expensive cars, 2 motorcycles, an entire building full of tools and equipment. I donated three car-loads of clothing and household goods to Goodwill.
At this point my only son was grown and gone and my wife and I had been divorced for 11 years.
On the Eve of my 50th birthday, I threw on a backpack and bought a one-way ticket to Thailand. I spent the next 6 months traveling Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia. I was looking for...something...clarity perhaps.
I ended up settling in Thailand and moved around infrequently for a few years. I met a wonderful Thai woman, who I became life partners with. We live a calm, serene and usually peaceful existence.
I began studying Buddhism again and Thai language, and took up teaching at a small, rural school in Southern Thailand. I've been here for five years now and have no intention of ever returning to America. My next trip will be a pilgrimage to Bhutan and further north to Nepal.
The study of ancient religions and their writings, (linguistic anthropology) are my life's foci now, along with the study of traditional indigenous water craft building techniques. (an indulgence)
I recently tried to teach at a local university, but was sickened by what I experienced there to such a degree that I felt compelled to exit as quickly as possible. I have lost my taste for the pursuit of status and money and being involved in enlightenment for sale.
So now, I only indulge in free classes and seminars, podcasts and videos like these. I do enjoy what the internet has to offer for free education and I see no need to pursue paying for paper with paper... to tell others what I have come to know and understand.

This is the path that I chose...to find what it is that I'm looking for in this life time. I'm in no way seeing ultimate enlightenment on the horizon. But I know it's somewhere ahead. Had I not made the decision that I made way back when, I wouldn't be where I am now. And feeling correct about ones course-heading is contentment.

we just had the annual tibetan uprising day parade in nyc, that is the anniversary of the chinese invasion in 1951, where thousands of tibetans marched, so this is a fine followup to that major event and marker that helps raise awareness of tibet in the west.

As a long-time Kagyu practitioner (and former monk) I was impressed with the clarity of this presentation. The only thing I would have added is the importance of the Karmapa and the controversial popularizer, Chogyam Trungpa. Trungpa spoke and wrote English better than any other Tibetan I met, and was able to translate the teachings into something very comprehensible to westerners. This was a great talk, and thanks for your efforts to present it to us.

The word 'Bön' is so interesting! In Danish, 'bøn' means 'prayer'. Our letter 'ø' is essentially the exact same as the letter 'ö'.
Tibetan is an Indo-European language with some ties to northern Germanic. That's why the Nazis sent a couple of explorers there to make propaganda. Brad Pitt's movie Seven Years in Tibet tells a sanitized version of their story.

To the point as always. But let me put that little detail straight : Sönam Gyatso (the 3rd in the incarnation line to come to be known as the Dalai Lamas) taught among Mongolian tribes. A religious teacher is called a "lama" in Tibetan, and as his name Gyatso means Ocean in Tibetan, the Mongolians just called him the "Ocean" Lama", or - in their language - the Dalai Lama. So, simply a translation (but, as always, Tibetans love to put meaning in names). By the way, all the 14 incarnations up to the present one (Tendzin Gyatso) bear Ozean (Gyatso) as part of their name.
It must also be remembered that "Tenzin Gyatso" is also what one might call the Dalai Lama's 'Regnal Name'. His birth name was "Lhamo Thondrup".

Quick correction: at 12:30, the Sakya Trizin is not a Tulku. That is a family lineage, passed down from father to son in the Sakya school.
He is a tulku technically of Apang Terton but yes, his position is familial.
Tulku system started by the Karmapa.
This might be one of the best introductions to and presentations of Tibetan Buddhism on TH-cam. Congratulations, I wish I had this video when I first started studying Buddhism almost 10 years ago.
Around 12:00, talking about interdependence on all other beings.
This thought helped me through periods of depression and great loneliness because I found meaning through being with animals. The Christian viewpoint of being a human created in god's image and the only thing with a soul on that "level" is such a lonely viewpoint. Acknowledging that we are also interdependent on animals and other living beings helped me so much because I actually wasn't alone. I'm always a part of something bigger.

I first learned about Tibetan Buddhism after playing the video game Cursed Mountain some years ago. Now I find the whole subject really fascinating.
I love the great exposure to history here. I recently made a video exploring Avalokiteshvara and Tara across Asia, and Tibet is especially fascinating. Great work!
Where I come from there were a bunch of Tibetan Buddhist families, and one of the Lamas was apparently reborn a few miles away from me, because he chose a few items that the old one used in life. There are even monks in robes and a monastery with a huge statue inside. The interesting thing is that the monastery looks like a regular house, but when they open the windows you can see their art.
Tibetan buddhist monastery usually has distinct style but because of the cost and hassle to built the traditional style some monastery usually settle with regular house.

He also recognized an abbot of His previous life who disguised as a servant and real servant as a rich man. Like that, there are many other indications.

Getting more people to understand interdependence could go a long way towards creating less strife in the world. For a comedic reference to this idea, you can read "The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul" by Douglas Adams. He's a holistic detective, who solves mysteries using the interconnectedness of all things. I love the book, it's ridiculously hilarious and interesting. They did a season or so on TV, called "Dirk Gently." The TV show is very different, but that's fine, it was decently funny as well.

I think I finally put my finger on what is so puzzling to me about Buddhism in general : it's not, like all the (pre-christian) European religions I know of (I'm European) or the book religions, about paying respect to deities. It seems to be more about a world view and a dedication of self to enlightening practices. Of course there are also deities/spirits in the background, but somehow it is more about Human itself rather than supernatural beings. It's super interesting.
Buddhism do believe that gods and deities exist but unlike all other religions that believe a god or deity can bless them, Buddhism don't believe that. I think that's the main difference between Buddhism and others in regards to gods and deities.

I don't think a ton is known about pre-christian European religions tbh. I have researched a few pre-christian faiths, both extant and extinct, and while a big portion is honoring deities there's also still usually a philosophy behind it. I'm guessing the philosophy comes later with more advanced religions. But so much was lost in Europe I don't think it's fair to judge it by what info remains.

Yes, there is Vajrayana in Japan and China (and Mongolia and elsewhere) but if you actually watched the documentary, you would note that it is predominantly about that form of Vajrayana centered initially in Tibet. Which has in the past 70 years been exported directly from Tibet to the rest of the world. As such, it's a good introduction. And I could make a case for calling Catholicism Italian Christianity, although I don't and wouldn't. The varieties of Vajrayana was NOT what the documentary was about. I mean, Shingon in Japan has interesting overlaps with Tibetan Vajrayana, but they are also markedly different, with different root texts and even different practices. Chinese Vajrayana ranges from Tibetan-oriented to something wildly shamanistic that is more related to Mongolian shamanism than what we normally think of as "Vajrayana." I mean, c'mon. Why don't we just call ice cream steak? Both of them are foods!

In Buddhist philosophy, it's thought that nothing in samsara is perfect. Everything is imperfect because all things rely on others, they will one day decay and vanish, and they are tied to the physical stressors of physics and emotions.
But this video, explaining Tibetan Buddhism in such a gentle way, is the closest to perfection that you can get! I think the world is more in value when this TH-cam channel exists. No one ever has ever explained Tibetan Buddhism so clearly in 25 minutes as this video. And it's free to watch! The world is such an amazing place!

Speaking of tantra, while some stuff is very elaborate, it does not need to be. There are high tantric practices which do not require much ritual at all.
Tantra is still hugely practiced in India. It has evolved. There's an Indian movie that shows tantra in great spotlight. Name of that movie is Kantara. In Hinduism tantra is mostly associated with lord Shiva. There are peoples called aghori. They practice tantra. That's just tip of iceberg

One incredibly important figure for all of Tibetan Buddhism was Atiśa who started the Kadampa or Kadam school, and was the head abbot for a time at Vikramashila. The Kadampa was sort of the proto-gelug school. It is said that Atiśa, not Padmasambhava, codified, or maybe made the path more clear and settled philosophical disputes about Buddhism in Tibet. Particularly with Lojong or mind training, and the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment- which is considered a highly important work that "settled" buddhism in tibet for centuries. I've read before as well that Tibetan Buddhist culture kept the traditions and art alive from the Pala empire where the three great monasteries were: Nalanda, Vikramashila, and Odantapuri. One of the major and secret tantras, the Six Yogas of Naropa, were pieced together by Naropa from his studies with Tilopa. Tilopa made sesame oil and is an amazing teacher who looms large in the Mahamudra tradition. Naropa was the head of Nalanda monastery. I believe every Tibetan order practices with the Six Yogas of Naropa, though they're usually only taught during the 3-year retreats to aspiring lamas and monks. There's other similar Six Dharmas of Niguma, supposedly Naropa's sister, and Six Dharmas of Sukhasiddhi who is thought to be either contemporary or taught by Niguma.
One addition to Sunyata is that it's not just interdependence, but also impermanence. Sunyata can be thought of as interdependence and impermanence happening simultaneously so everything is empty of inherent existence. Nothing is static. Everything is sort of being built or breaking apart at all times. Or at least that's how I've understood it to be, and my lama or any of the elders of my sangha have corrected or disagreed. "form is emptiness and emptiness is form" as Avalokiteśvara says. om mani padme hum!

Corrections: It was Princess Bhrikuti of Licchavi Nepal who was the first wife of the Emperor Songsten Gampo. She was monumental in the expansion of Buddhism in Tibet as she brought with her from Nepal (birthplace of the Buddha) as part of her dowry, Buddhist statues, artifacts, sacred scriptures, and most importantly expert Newari craftsmen who helped build hundreds of monasteries and stupas under her command. The current Potala palace built by the 5th Dalai Lama is an extension of the Red Palace that was built under Bhrikuti’s command as is the Jokhang temple aka House of Lord

When I was in the military and I was stationed over in Japan that was my second exposure to Eastern religions. My first exposure, even though my neighborhood with mostly black we did have a large number of Southeast Asian immigrants aka the boat people that moved into our neighborhood in the 1980s.

I'm not a Buddhist but a lot of this sounds like me, especially the stuff about compassion, where you enrich your own life by enriching everyone around you, and the idea that you should do good works even if you don't see the results. I don't know if my own philosophy just happens to coincide with mahayana, or if I was influenced when learning about Buddism long ago. I know I learned about Buddhism when I was in school but I don't remember what exactly I learned.
My Tibetan Buddhist teacher once said, "some people call themselves Buddhist, but are not Buddhist. Other people may have never even heard the word 'Buddhist', but are Buddhist."
I've always aligned to some degree with the idea that everything is interconnected and that being good will bring good upon yourself, but that's not why you should be good. I think if you have empathy it just makes sense on a very basic level.
Well, we can have compassion without buddhism and indeed many humans have been compassionate long before buddhism even existed.

It's unfortunate you did not cover the other schools in more detail, such as Kagyu and Sakya, and their emphasis on certain practice and scholasticism. All four schools are incredibly prevalent on the global stage. It was also worth mentioning the Rime movement, with reforms to end Gelug dominance and to encourage interschool interaction and discourse. Many monastics receive training in different backgrounds, you might have a Nyingma teacher, do Kagyu rituals, and then follow a Terma lineage. Also, the Sakya Trizin is not a Tulku, but part of the Khön family which has been hereditary leaders of the Sakya school. Merit making is also prevalent in all forms of Buddhism, not all lay people are expected to have the capacity for study and theological practice, so more mundane practice is helpful for both personal purposes and for supporting the monastic institutions. Still, a fine very basic introductory video.
I honestly feel there is more intersect interaction than ever before. My family is traditionally Gelugpa but I didn’t know that until recently since my parents would take me to all kind of monasteries and masters from different schools 😅
@@Bzdm0 Thank you for sharing. It's quite apparent in Tibetan and Himalayan diaspora communities. In the past one might affiliate with the monastery that's close to home, or if a son or brother ordained at a specific school of a specific lineage. But in the diaspora, where retaining culture and religion is key to identity and survival, you'll see families visit Tibetan temples as a center of community and heritage. It's a reminder of home, even if the specific religious functions are not necessarily what you're accustomed to. For example, some of the Karma Kagyu and Shangpa Kagyu monasteries in upstate New York host Bhutanese families and visitors, even though Bhutan is traditionally a Drikung Kagyu nation, and there are certain language and culture differences.
