Same. I'm kinda mad though that someone tried to show me him some 9 years ago or something and I watched a few mins and couldn't watch any more as I thought he was too grumpy. I was in a bad mood at the time. Fast forward all these years and I stumbled upon him by accident and saw that he's the greatest.
I remember the discovery. My friend in college mentioned an idiot abroad and the 'alright wall of china' quote. I decided to look it up and stumbled upon clips of the ricky gervais show and then learned about XFM. During the summer break after college finished I got an office job at my local council and was able to listen to music while I worked. Often I found myself listening to XFM and having to stifle my laughter in the office.
This was one of the first times Karl was filmed by Ricky and I’m always amazed at how much more there is going on behind his eyes when you see him interviewed now. Travelling the world definitely has broadened his mind!
Karl really makes you think about and laugh at the oddest things 😂 there's nobody like him. This was brilliant, thanks Josh. Good to see you're on the water rather than caffeine drinks :) love the green bottle.
Can’t believe this was 16yrs ago. I remember Karl being properly introduced to the world after previously only hearing his voice. This was a bonus feature on Ricky’s standup dvd “Politics” I have still got the dvd from back then I agree you should have done this before learn English. Learn English was 7 or 8yrs after this
Maybe the three-legged fella phoned his career advisor who was overseas in the states and what have ya, and the phone line was all crackly and cutting off, and the career advisor told him to be a jogger but he misheard it as "a juggler". I mean this was ages ago.
I bought the Politics DVD for my old man's birthday and we watched this together, he had MND, and he was laughing so much at the nature of infinity part, I honestly thought I had killed him.
Carl is a character from the north of England, he is full of dry humour like so many from the north. I was born and brought up in the north of England and love the place and the people
I feel your pain when you said "I'm scared to take a drink", I like to snack and drink while I watch comedies but Pilkington is next level choking hazard.
@@harrythomas1252 the relevance is Ricky was Carl's adviser Ricky Got carl on the air in the first place, it was ment to be a little joke but as usual there's always one isn't there sad really 😢
Ever since I discovered the old XFM shows YEARS ago out of sheer luck I have been obsessed with these guys, they've been a huge part of my laughs in the last 10 years
It's a great video, it's basically a very condensed version of the XFM shows as they discuss all these bits on the show (and in more detail, usually ending in Ricky either shouting at Karl, or lying on the floor gasping for air).
Love your videos dude. I've watched and listened to all the series and podcasts repeatedly for years and watching your reacts to them is like watching it all over again. Got me cryin with laughter annoyin the misses. Watch 'unseen footage of karl and ricky' !!!
I love our northern accents. We sound so ‘matter-of-fact’!😂 deadpan British accent! Say ‘bastard’ in a British southern accent, I don’t feel insulted at all, say ‘bastard’ in a northern English accent and I feel fully offended!🤣 Especially, Yorkshire!😂
Brilliant vid. Yeah this is the first time we all ever met Karl on video which is why it would have been good to do it first, but it's ok, it was just as funny because you know Karl now. :) "Singing happy birthday for the 8th time that day" Hahaha. He's so funny. On the XFM shows, Karl would take words from various songs and make sentences of famous things he said. That was amazingly funny. One of the one's he did was "And you'll never see an old man, eat a Mars Baaaaar" (He had to use Mars Bar because he couldn't find a song lyric with Twix in it, haha).
I feel like you'd find 'Living with Ricky Gervais' even funnier. There's 2 parts and it's about his relationship with a fellow comedian called Robin Ince. Robin was Ricky's Karl, before Karl replaced him and became his number 1 'pet.' I really think you'd like it, very similar 'pest-like' behaviour, only Robin is a quite intelligent man, which made it even funnier!
Oh yeah, I find that a bit excruciating. It's so clear that Robin is not into most of Ricky's antics, but he just doesn't know how to make him stop. Love Robin paired with Brian Cox in the Infinite Monkey Cage, I went to see them live last year at Wembley Arena, excellent.
Karl is right about infinity, it is just as possible they type crap infinitely, in fact, it is more possible. That is like saying if you spend an infinite amount of time throwing tennis balls at the moon you will eventually hit it.

Another great Karl reaction bud :D btw what would I have to search for to find that cool big green water container? Been looking for something that kinda size myself and the handle seems like a nice touch :D
My favourite quote from Ricky about Karl came from the twix discussion that I think sums up Karl. "You know the terrible thing about all this Steve?....Is he's right!"
The xfm show or podcast when hes talking about the two kids in the same year as him in school who had massive heads and webbed feet but weren't related is the funniest thing I've heard. Crying laughing
Yes!! Haha Sorry for hassling you about watching this, lol. I think Learning English is just as funny and still a great introduction to Karl Pilkington. It seems as though he's actually become wiser since this recording. Meet Karl Pilkington 2 and also there's a Mr and Mrs quiz between Ricky and Karl on TH-cam which is great. Karl was producer for quite a few comedians on XFM before Ricky and Steve returned to that station. It took Ricky's genius, comedic perception and fascination/obsession with the human condition to recognise what Karl was and to seize that opportunity and draw more magic out of him, like a snake charmer.
Watching these is like watching with a friend, so thanks for doing these Josh. Interesting to hear your thoughts about which to watch first - this one or Learn English. I watched this first but I actually like the English one better. I guess you’re just a stickler for chronology (I get that too).

100 percent. He's gave me so much joy.

2:36 - Karl: "They just age overnight. It's like a pear."
The way he delivers these lines is so good..
"Singing happy birthday for the 8th time that day" 😂😂
To god damn funny 😂
It’s genius.
"Singing happy birthday for the 8th time that day" 😂😂 Possibly the funniest thing that's ever been said.
Lol hilarious 😂😂😂
Funnier than, "You thumped a monkeh"?
I was thinking the same thing. Just a little comment. Turned out to be one of the funniest things ever said. xD

Pollington should carry a choking hazard warning
"steve merchant". I like how Karl then looks to the other side of the room, obviously at Steve xD
I’m so glad you finally watched this. Knew you’d enjoy it. It’s crazy to think that it was a whole 16 years ago.
Yessss thanks for doing this one,
Was going to bed soon, not now haha
Liked before I even started watching! Haha I knew you'd like this one. Karl is such a strange little creature 😂
