  • Tucked along a curvy street in southern Colorado is a lost ski hill that will soon offer the promise of family-friendly skiing with less traffic than I-70, barely any lift lines and a daily pass under $50.

Huerfano County needs this ski area right now. The School system should support this ski area.
This area will thrive again, very soon. This is the Colorado culture I was raised in, before GREED took over Summit County.

Snowboarded there in ‘96 for a day. Cool vibe, for sure. It’s a town asset, I hope it comes back-we’ll visit for sure.

Skied this area a few times when in college in Trinidad in 1982. Fun times. Good luck!

It looks like a pretty affluent area in the background. Maybe these folks should think about tossing in! I'm sure a winter resort in the back yard would only increase the value of their properties even more.

You can go there now and visit the Cuchara Mountain Park and play frisbie golf.

I did not see a link to how to contribute in this segment. Also, it's worthwhile to have the subtitles, but you might need a human to check them over before airing.

Contribute to the homeless instead or anything else, we don’t need another white washed ski resort.

The Cuchara ski area will never come back in its full capacity. I worked for the Cuchara Sanitation & Water District until I retired. The owners of the old ski area ruined their relationship with the National Forest Service and will have a hard time getting any permits to use government land again. They don't own any water to be able to make snow and all the infrastructure for that purpose has been destroyed over the years. It's a pipe dream of some of the old ski bums that moved here years ago and still believe they can return to the old days. The Riblit lifts can't be rebuilt because that company doesn't exist any longer and the cable of the only lift left on private land has to have the cable changed which will be a few million dollars. It's a very slim chance it will ever operate again. The forest is retaking the ski runs now. The electric bills, water bills, and waste water bills from unpaid balances will set them back a lot.

Please tell me more.... It's such a diamond in the ruff area that seems to have potential..... How long ago was the relationship ruined?

    Cuchara's snowfall is too unreliable.

It has been, and would be problematic for a private business looking for big profits. But for a non profit who's looking to provide a service to the community, it's not as much of an issue. The community just wants affordable skiing for when the mountain has the snow for it 🙏

@@nswain420 Thanks, Nathan and you're exactly right. Skiing is our main focus now since it's so much work to repair a lift that has sat for 20 years, but our vision is for Cuchara Mountain Park to be a place for year-round recreation in which skiing is just a part but the focus is always on being as affordable as possible and increasing participation in outdoor recreation!

@@panaderoskicorporation Panadero has already snow making equipment for the lean times, and the best snowfall totals in in the best years (on the same snowfall path as Wolf Creek)

@@rockymtndieselrider1133 There's no infrastructure for snow making. They own no water and everything there about the water is not owned by the old ski area.
