Man...this song is too perfect. It's basically just the chords F# - A - E - F# with D thrown in for the hell of it every so often. Such a simple song. Basically a bluesy sort of progression...but it allows Stipes super unique manner of singing melodies to shine. I love how he hits all these little chromatic notes...as many have noted...many suspended seconds and fourths. From a music theory perspective, this song is so interesting to deconstruct. Writing such a simple yet amazing song is an art.
There are no words to describe how much I love this band. Stong songs, great guys and awesome live. I miss them live but they busted their asses for 30 years and gave us so so much great music. I'm thankful.
So I am sitting here and it's cold and rainy, which I love. My first thought for music is Counting Crows (Raining in Baltimore, and the like), but then I thought. This cold air and beautiful sky and rain noises and all that goes along with it call for rebirth and creation when the sun comes out. Spring is coming. And Easter. And your future and mine. So let's prepare and begin again. Whatever you do, rock it out. That is the way to succeed in life. Consider the lilies of the field. They toil not, neither do they spin.
Always one of my favourite songs, but I never thought I'd see them play it live as it's not exactly well known. But saw them at Old Trafford in around 2005 and they opened with it. Amazing!
And that my friend is how you begin a show. God I miss them.
sooooo much!
and this my friend, is a good comment
Agreed. Too bad 90% of the crowd had no idea what the song was. Pageant was my introduction to REM on vinyl. AMAZING.
God I love this song. Took a month to finally listen to the album in 86, cause I kept replaying this.
Amazing song
Amazing album
Yup - I wore a tape out with this one and these days - I only listened to the whole thing when I got the cd years later
The Stipe dance is a public treasure worthy of enshrinement.
I hear what ya saying Tim.........................and I dig it.

And that’s why they’re the greatest live band ever.....😀
always up for debate - in my humble opinion, REM's greatest album is Life's Rich Pageant ....with Document a very close second !

Seattle says thank you to this song as there would be no grunge without Fables/Pagaent REM.
Yes!! Especially in Nirvanas and Pearl Jams music you can really hear how inspired they are.

What's up with the painted on monobrow? Was that a salute to Bill Berry?
@vicodumb This song is obscure? That's a scary thought but maybe you're right. :-(

Clearly a crowd who became fans of the band when they heard "Losing my religion". There's isn't a single person who knows any of the words!
Smh. I grew up with this band. I knew all the words to this song when I was 8 lol
