  • When Jimmy met Laowa in Hong Kong, he was very impressed with two of their new ultra wide manual lenses for Micro Four Thirds. If you need the widest rectilinear lens for your Olympus camera, these can be great options, providing that you can operate manual lenses. But with these two so close to each other, Jimmy used the opportunity to demonstrate what they are capable of, together with highlights of there strength and weaknesses, so you can make an informed decision to see which one is best for you.

For any MFT users trying to decide between Laowa 7.5mm, 9mm, or the new 10mm; I personally recommend getting the 9mm first. It might be all you need.
I bought the 7.5mm first for use with architecture interiors of apartments and homes (real estate photography). It's a great lens, but it's a bit to wide for most rooms, though it is ideal for kitchen, bathroom, and closets. The 9mm (which I bought later) is ideal for all rooms the size of bedrooms and larger rooms like living room. I also find the 9mm to be ideal for architecture exteriors and landscapes (where the 7.5mm is a bit too wide for those things IME).
Both the 9 and 7.5 are great and very useful as a team, but if I could only own one it would be the 9mm becayse its FOV is more useful in more circumstances. Also the 9mm is easier to use for good results because it has less perspective distortion, and on MFT the 9mm has no barrel distortion, very little vignetting, and sharp corner to corner from F2.8 to F11. I find the 9mm photos need no work in post, even for architecture.
One reason the 9mm is (IMO) perfect on an MFT camera is that the 9mm was originally made for APS-C cameras. It's optically excellent on APS-C cameras in center of frame, very good at edges of frame, and good at corners; but on an MFT camera its excellent across entire frame.

Great review Jimmy! I love my Laowa 7.5mm and I use it regularly for architectural and landscape shots. It's super sharp and compact but suffers a little from vignetting which of course can be eliminated in post process.

Well done video and - again - a lot to take away for me.
The specs you show read a viewing angle of 110° for the 7.5 and 113° for the 9mm, but the latter one is on an APS-C sensor. On our beloved MFT cameras it is 100° for the 9mm.
    Just to mention it.

Nice. I guess it is the only video available featuring both the lenses. Is it possible to make some side by side shots available to understand the angle of view? And if possible with comparisons with Olympus or Samyang fish eyes?? With Olympus bodies, can we perform keystone correction on 7.5 and then how does it compare to 9mm zero D after the correction??

I could never find good deals for those UWA m43 primes whereas I often found good deals for used m.zuiko 9-18mm which is a tiny lens with AF and it allows for a normal focal length too which makes it great for vacation. I sometimes hate that I have to unfold it to shoot it but it has its size advantage. Another plus is the excellent Olympus service. For some reason I see very few offers for those used manual primes (except for fisheye lenses) and brand new they are quite expensive. The only reason to upgrade I would understand is a potentially much better image quality as 9-18mm is kit lens quality. But it's Olympus kit lens so it was always good enough and f4 does not hurt so much in UWA with a stabilised body.

I own these lenses. They're so easy to zone focus that I seldom need to use peaking. The DOF is so much that focusing by any manual method (zone, peaking, or magnification) is easy. It's also very easy to have deep DOF when wanted. I think there's no need for AF on lenses this wide. I appreciate and use the excellent DOF and focusing scale on the lens barrel. The image quality from both lenses is impressive. The 9mm MFT lens is my favorite lens for my EM10ii camera because it has excellent image quality, color, contrast, rendering and character. In a word, the photos "pop" (similar to Leica or Sigma). Also, I don't have to do anything to my architectural photos in post because I see no barrel distortion. The 9mm is the best UWA lens ever made, IMO. The 7.5mm is a close second, but for architecture it needs some slight barrel correction in post.

Looks like a great piece of glass. I don’t understand why Uncle Oly doesn’t use its old tried and true Zuiko Manuel platform lens body. I still shoot with my OM-1n OM-2n & OM-2s. The 28mm f2.0 is a beautiful lens. That group of glass is the perfect size for the M1-M2 body.

No, you have to use the 'scale' on the lens. I presume you want to use hyper focus technique. So, if you set to f/8, check the scale to see what range of distance the lens covers. The infinite sign has to line up with 'f8'.
