    The first words out of his mouth are.. 'you are renting here'. I was fascinated with the detail. If renting, I would be glad he explained all the typical noises and how to do X, or Y. Great to see 45 years of continued development in passive solar and rain gather living. I am truly impressed that it is possible to live like that.

    I can see why this video is useful when it comes to advice for renters. Anyone who has ever allowed a family member to hire their static caravan will be familiar with getting phone calls on the first night... "Where is the switch to turn on the gas bottles?, How do i get the shower to heat up,... where is the trip/reset fusebox for the electrics... It might seem patronising but if you have remote bookers who you are not going to see before they book, you don't want them to trash your tech because they did or didn't do something that they needed to do. people who WANT to have an eco holiday are not going to necessarily be tech savvy

    Talking to others about this type of construction is interesting. You
    either have people that try and argue that it's a waste of money, won't
    last, ugly, and just arms crossed saying "NO" like a kid trying to eat a new
    vegetable. Or the people that are into saving money, being less
    dependent of the grid life, and being more green or being able to survive on
    your own with no outside help.
    Using what my utility bills are a month in a year is the only selling point I needed to get interested in this project and start research.
    Great job and fantastic videos. Thanks a lot for all the instructions.

    So, where I grew up, we had a cistern that caught rain water and we had to be cognizant of water use. This video reminded me of that.

    Wow, What a great video. Your explanations are so clear and thorough. I am deeply grateful for the time you spent on this video and your thoughtful demonstrations. I'm slowly getting educated on earthship design and this video really helps me understand a little bit of how they work. Thanks so much and keep up the great work.

    I am transfixed with this concept as I have always been interested in the 'off the grid' lifestyle. Even though there are a few smartasses, there are always a few, that's fine. These types ov humans are some ov the reasons why 'off the grid living' is such a great idea to me. The other is being able to live alone or with loving intelligent compassionate humans in happiness & peace. Being from a creative family unit, I imagine my Earthship as a geodesic plan with all the bells & whistles. I would also paint the home as I desired to as well.
    Thank you for your ingenuity & for sharing.
    Congrads on your completion ov your project. Please keep building them!

    I am very glad that you put this video up, including the instructions. Although I currently have no plans of staying a night there, you did the community a great service in informing people about what actually living in one might be like. This is the first video I have seen regarding these that was realistic about the fact that they are not like every other house and do have eccentricities.
    Your video was very informative and I wish you all the luck getting it rented out to responsible people at top dollar every night!

    At only 8" rain per year you better not have too many guests that like to bathe on a regular basis. Have you ever thought of a atmospheric water generator? You can put one right in the green room and let all that humidity get turned into water.

    Great job on your Earthship! Although I am in a conventional house, I am in the process of installing 2400 watts of solar on my roof and using a hybrid tier grid and off grid switchable setup so I can go off grid during a power outage. I may experiment with some solar water heat soon. Love your videos!

  • @Unz360
    @Unz360 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This looks like a classy earthship! While the video is obviously made for people who will rent this one, it's a pretty good explanation to anyone interested how one of these works. And it has wifi, wow! lol. I can imagine with one like this that seems high end, you could possibly even turn it to a 'smart-home' as well? I was thinking you could automate the windows, and control them from a smartphone maybe.
    That would be cool too

    • @planetbob4709
      @planetbob4709 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like this idea. You could link humidity sensors to the venting systems to control humidity and reduce the chance of molds and mildew.
      I live in Georgia in the U.S. and even conventional housing has serious mold and mildew problems.

    • @Unz360
      @Unz360 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ya good point, hmm.. maybe we're onto something there. Smart earthships! Smart earth homes, clean smart ships etc ha

    • @starlytesplanet
      @starlytesplanet 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TBH, a smart earthship based on low power circuits would need say a one and a half foot square solar panel to run, and save a lot of hassle, as well as auto regulation of atmospheric interior :)

  • @cuddles6938
    @cuddles6938 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You could add a Antenna Panel on the wall high up to get TV broadcast. You can replace the toilet handle and get Buttons on the toilet instead of a handle with teardrops, 1 is for just number 1 and 2 teardrops for number 2. I would worry about Snakes crawling in the front door if it's left wide open.

    It's been 5 years since this video. How is the home performing lately? I'm building a similar earthship in Colorado where we can't harvest rainwater, but the rest of the home's energy considerations will certainly benefit my needs. My Foundation will be concrete instead of tires, and I won't have the need to recycle my water for multiple uses since I'll have well water. My energy needs should be less than $1,000.00 per year.

    My main question is, why not have a utility specific area of the house that is separate from the living space? There is "closet" space for water heater, filter system, etc, but minimal space for actual storage. All utility based fixtures can be isolated in a remote room/area of the house and all the associated plumbing/wiring can be routed there. And on another note, I thought you built that house for you and your wife

      +Tron You can build a home like this from waste material and pallets for next to nothing, you will get better products, sinks ect at any demolition site,The only difference is you won't have to half as much to live there and this place is clearly made only available to those with serious money, Not for those on a strict budget living off grid

    Near the end of the tour (25.33) you mention that your studio earthship is not heating water with the sun. That, unfortunately, "they" wouldn't let you do it yourself. That "they" wanted to charge you a lot of money, so you decided not to go that route. But that your on-demand water heater is highly efficient and uses very little propane. ... Can you explain who "they" are? This, for me, is very significant, since you chose to go with an on-demand water heater system rather than pay what "they" wanted to charge you to install the solar water heating. Thanks in advance! ~Jared.

    Informative! We are moving back home to Albuquerque. I am curious if one of these could be built in ABQ or Rio Rancho? We would love one of these to be our forever home!

    Great job! I'm curious, if you don't mind sharing, how much did it cost you to build this studio Earthship? I'm interested in this model but am curious how much it costs to build on your own. Thanks in advance!

    I like the concepts of water use but I like Straw Bale & Cob construction, not as labor intensive and more square footage and just as solar & water efficient. I think everyone needs to rethink how they live and what mark they leave for future generations.

      i agree, im looking into rammed earth bricks made by hydraulic presses to build up the walls, then plastering it with adobe to help with earthquake survive ability, it should work very well.

      I've been studying cob house construction as well. I think all these different ways of building homes is fascinating. We need to get out of the cookie cutter houses and start empowering ourselves more to build our lives from the ground up instead of relying on companies to do everything for us and get locked in debt traps. I never want a mortgage!

      Rammed earth blocks don't survive earthquakes as well as straight Cob buildings or Straw buildings.It has been proven by shake table testing on more than one occasion.

      Roger Spinks I wonder what the cost for something like this would be like. A lot of people like to talk about how efficient and practical building something like this would be but when I do the research there like 300 to $400,000....how did that happen??? lol

    the septic, you can buy pellets and reuse the water for gardening., Do you use the eco septic system or normal for pickup? this can be a solution.

    First the house is amazing, and I enjoyed the tour quite a bit. It would be cool to get information on annual costs, and the needed day to day tasks.
    #Energy
    How often do you have to have propane delivered? How long do the batteries last? And I didn't hear why a level of ~70 on the batteries was an issue. Does the house need larger batteries or more solar collectors? What happens during normal usage? The refrigerator looked _"normal"_ as opposed to one of those ultra insulated types, was there a reason for that? Did anyone think of using a backup (i.e.propane) refrigeration system?
    #Water
    What happens if the levels get low, do you get watered delivered? Should the tanks be bigger and/or the water collection area? What about clogged pipes (e.g. somebody using too much TP)? How hard is it to clear them, easy access?
    #Landscaping
    How far is the septic from the home, and what types of plants can be used with the "black" water?
    I've always wondered what it would be like to live _"off grid"_. Has anyone built a home like this in an isolated area? And as I'm getting older I worry about various maintenance issues. Hopefully a low water area, in the mountains, with the right landscaping would still look nice as time goes by? It is the dessert I suppose landscaping is rather challenging.

      +Beorn Borg I'm not part of earthship so I hope you don't mind my fielding some of your questions.
      It's hard to establish how much propane needs to be delivered. I lived in a log cabin over the fall and winter in the northern regions and survived with a small space heater and propane range. However, two months into the winter and my bottle was empty and needed refilling. The bottle was approximately 20 gallon.
      Likewise, battery life is hard to pin down. the answer depends on use or abuse and how many deep cycles (how many times you nearly drain the battery) you cause. From what I understand, by keeping the battery levels no less than 70% filled, you can get 8 to 10 years from lead acid filled deep cycle batteries. Those are commonly used because they are the least expensive. Other batteries might have longer lifespan (20-30 years I think) but they are much more expensive. (may I suggest going to "off grid build's" page and seeing other videos which better describe some of this information and better?)
      Just a thought: Remember, though propane is relatively inexpensive currently, it is also a non-renewable resource and it would be better to find alternative methods (if possible).
      As I understand it, rain water in that region is scarce, so most water is pumped up from an underground aquifer. It's better to try to rely on rainwater, since it's free, which is probably why they try to ration it as much as possible. Also, relying on aquifers as a water source is thought to be cause for underground erosion and thus sinkholes. Clogging pipes happens everywhere and just like anybody else they probably have to call a plumber or septic specialist to use a tool called a "snake" to clear out obstructions.
      Believe it or not, you can just use regular plants in a leach field aka septic field. This isn't new technology and researching on the internet will probably net a better answer. You DON'T want to use plants to eat from a black water/leach field because there are pathogens that go with black water. You also don't want to use any deep rooted plants as their roots can clog up your septic field and then you'd need to contact a septic specialist to clear the pipes.
      I don't know how far a septic field has to be from your residence, but your local building code is probably a better source to answer this.
      I haven't built such a dwelling, but I'm considering it too, difficult though that might be at my advanced age. It's simply easier for younger people.

    I know this video is several years old but just a suggestion. When you're doing a video for a rental it might be best to clean the space of all personal items and clutter and make it look really presentable. Looks like a bachelor pad to be honest. Maybe also a little bit more attention to the decor and Flow of items. Just my suggestion. Maybe you've changed it since you initially did this video so you may have done an updated video.
