The plane scene is incredible because it actually implies Helen was at some point prior military. She uses correct Naval aviation terminology, and followed all the protocols for the situation she was in.
She first started by giving her call sign India Gold Niner Niner or IG99 and requesting an approach vector. She made the tower aware of her presence and asked where she should go to set up for landing.
When she got no response she asked again and nothing.
When she hears the radar lock alarm and sees the missles she says "IG99 Transmiting in the blind guard, disengage I repeat disengage!"
Transmiting in the blind means shes talking to the tower without establishing two way communications. She's telling the tower that she can't hear them, so if they've been giving her orders to turn around or that she was entering restricted airspace, she hasn't been receiving it. Normally this would mean they would stop firing and send an escort plane to escort the Helen away from the airspace or to a safe landing zone.
After the second volley of missles she says "IG99 IS BUDDY SPIKED DISENGAGE!" which means "I am a friendly aircraft and I am receiving radar lock from friendly forces, DO NOT FIRE"
Everything else she says is also accurate minus a slight mess up with her Mayday call (which I can excuse because she's got freaking missles flying at her)

I love what they do right in this film. They break a lot of the stereotypes with the supers. Bob is very strong and almost indestructible, but he isn't a meathead. He is very good at what he does, and when he is on the job, very professional, thinks tactically, and uses his powers very intelligently. His wife's powers, on the surface, seem minor by comparison. But she uses them to the utmost in very creative and effective ways. And that she has a lot of other skills, like being an expert pilot and knowledgeable in the types of missiles being launched at them. They were professional heroes and it shows. They were FAR more than their powers.
And as for the kids. Dash, has great speed, but he's only nine or ten years old, and has short legs still. His powers aren't developed yet, and he hasn't had a chance to really learn how to use them, because they've had to keep them secret. Same with his sister, which was why she had such a problem putting up a large field in a stressful situation. All in all, I love the realistic portrayal of where each of the family is at, in their lives.

Helen can stretch because she is constantly being pulled in a million different directions as a wife and mother, Frozone has ice powers because he is super chill, Violet is shy and guarded, so she can turn invisible and create forcefields, Dash is a hyper kid and therefore is super fast, Jack-Jack doesn’t have a developed personality yet because he is a baby, and we’ll explore what that means for his power set in the sequel.

The two old guys who commented on the climactic battle were cameos of (and voiced by) Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, the last of Disney's "Nine Old Men" who basically invented the animated film. Thomas and Johnston literally wrote the book on animation - Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life, which is the foundational text of aspiring animators ever since. Brad Bird, who directed The Incredibles, got his start in traditional animation (his previous major work was The Iron Giant) and specifically added the cameos as a token of respect to the men who were so instrumental in his career.
John Ratzenberger has been a cornerstone of PIXAR - previously voicing Hamm (Toy Story), P T Flea (A Bug's Life), the Abominable Snowman (Monsters Inc) and the school of moonfish (Finding Nemo) - and is considered to be the studio's good luck charm. But as they were finishing production of The Incredibles, they discovered that they hadn't included Ratzenerger. Rather than risk jinxing the project by his absence, they rushed to produce the scene with The Underminer for the sole purpose of including a speaking role for Ratzenberger.

  • @scapevelocity
    @scapevelocity ปีที่แล้ว +9

Brad Bird provided the voice of Edna Mode. He did it for the test track, and then later it was decided that nobody could improve on the character he created. By the way, Syndrome/Buddy was modeled on Bird. He said he didn't realize it until much later when the animators finally fessed up.
Also, as much as this is the best superhero movie, it's also the best James Bond movie. In fact, the trailer used the instrumental theme from On Her Majesty's Secret Service. That was before Michael Giacchino wrote his original score, which would be right at home in a Bond film.

Aside from maybe The Fantastic Four, The Incredibles is the first time we got a superhero family film. Usually, superhero movies always went with the single male or female lead, but this was the first time we got a superhero film that has the family unit as the centric focus (for the most part). And for a Pixar cartoon, it dives into some deep stuff with Bob and his desire to relive the glory days of his youth. It feels great to have a film that celebrates and promotes the family unit.
I also love how complex and diverse the characters are in terms of their powers and how they relate to their personalities:
    - Bob is super strong and has strong skin, which ties into his overconfidence and baldheaded nature, yet very capable.
    - Helen has super elasticity, which ties into her ability to adapt and be flexible to any situation, including raising a family.
    - Violet can turn invisible and create force fields, both of which tie into how she's shy and mostly invisible to everyone, yet as she overcomes her shyness and becomes more confident in herself, her ability to create longer force fields becomes stronger.
    - Dash has superspeed, which ties into his overconfidence (similar to his father), his desire to do and achieve more, and his impatience, yet still a child who is learning.
    - Jack-Jack has a multitude of powers due to his infant status and uncertainty, which will one day settle on one.
    - Frozone can form ice from humidity, which ties into his more 'cool' and 'relaxed' nature.

I still have my absolute favorites…”The Hunchback of a Notre Dame” and then “The Prince of Egypt”, both of which are very dark and more serious takes on topics, but stunning productions and really well done. I don’t know if you’re diving into older animated films or only doing modern ones though. I believe both of those are from the 90s. Maybe “Prince” was early 2000s.

Some examples (slight spoilers ahead, I guess...):
At the end of this movie, Supers were (somewhat) legal again - at the start of the sequel (which starts exactly where this one ended) they were not at all...
In this movie, Bob's character arc was realizing that his family was more important to him than being a superhero - but in the sequel he gets jealous that his wife gets a chance to do superhero work but not him

I think one of the best parts about this movie, and one very often overlooked, is Syndrome’s henchmen. They’re not just bumbling thugs for the heroes to mow down on their way to the main villain, they’re actually quite competent and clearly dangerous people with their own personalities. While the more experienced heroes clearly know this and are aware enough to avoid them or take them out from a safe difference they clearly consider them a legitimate threat. They pose a significant danger to the kids and it’s really only through blind luck that the kids survive their encounter with them. We see that super powers alone aren’t what makes a powered individual a hero, and they actually kind of prove Syndrome’s point that with the right technology and training anybody can be “super”.

It's funny how you caught onto Syndrome's name. Most people think it's a reference to "Hero Syndrome" - a pattern of behavior where someone puts people in danger so that they can save them from said danger. The example used most often is a firefighter who starts fires, but in this case, that basically describes Syndrome's plan to a T.

This movie had an amazing bonus feature disk that included a segment on how Jack Jack got his powers, a bio/interview with all the different supers (sad that the girl sucked into the plane turbine was only in high school when she died), and a funny 70’s style comic cartoon that is being watched by Frozone and Mr Incredible. This is absolutely hilarious because Frozone gets angry and loses his COOL.

It's quite a feat to manage to make such extremely well-established powers from some of the biggest comic superheroes like Mr.Fantastic, Flash and well super strength, not feel boring. Most media that deal with superpowers have to come up with new ones to make it interesting (in part bcs of this movie I'd say)

I like that the conflict in this movie is understandable, rather than stupid and obviously one sided. Like, yeah, law enforcement shouldn't treat nonviolent crimes like violent crimes, that's dangerous.
If I found life so intolerable that I decided to end it and someone grabbed me, threw me through a window, and landed on top of me, resulting in untold medical bills, and now I'm in pain everyday when I already didn't think life was worth living, I'd sue too. I hope that guy got all his medical bills covered and plenty extra for the pain and suffering; if Mr. Incredible is fonna force him to continue to exist, Mr. Incredible can make sure it's as easy an existence as possible, considering he gave the guy disability. If you're gonna stop someone from self uninstalling, you better be ready to fix all their problems, not cause more, 'cause that's not a decision anyone comes to lightly.

I was reading title as how did this movie do certain things and to answer that question, it was the early 2000s and they didn't give a shxt, Code Lyoko for example is a French Cartoon that aired on CN and they had the balls to allow pretty mature things like X.A.N.A. possessing the Knockoff Xenomorph Animatronic and lick Sissi, a freaking teenager for a moment after stuck in gooey webbing or whatever like prey.

  • @inarar5334
    @inarar5334 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Oh nice.
And animation allows for stuff live action doesn't do well. Very specifically, stretchy powers are very hit or miss with live action effect techniques. You seen Into the Spider-verse? Same kinda deal, there's stuff in there that'd be next to impossible live action without looking like obvious cgi. When it's already animated our brains don't register it any different but it can be jarring in live action. That very specific issue is the reasoning that was given for changing Ms Marvel's powerset for the TV show. They knew stretchy powers wouldnt look good enough for them, so changed it up.

The sequel isn't as good but still better than expected, this is such a great family friendly superhero movie though!
Another interesting super movie that takes things in a depressing realistic direction is CODE 8 (2019), long story short people with super powers are allowed to use them but are treated as second class citizens because they're a danger to society, and law is enforced with something between robocops and terminators.
